Qatar handball team clinches historic Olympics last-eight berth, to take on Germany next
Qatar’s handball team, silver medallists at the 2015 IHF Men’s World Championships, qualified for the knock-out quarterfinals of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.
This is the best performance by a Qatari team at the quadrennial extravaganza.
Qatar defeated Argentina 22-18 in their final Group A game to progress to the next round as the fourth team from the group. The winners led 12-9 at half-time.
In the last-eight game on Wednesday, Qatar will take on Group B leaders Germany. It will not be an easy game for Qatar as the Germans, who lost to Qatar in the quarterfinals of the IHF Worlds last year, will be looking for revenge.
Qatar, appearing in their first-ever Olympic Games, will have everything to play for. They will expect their attacking trio of Rafael Capote, Bertrand Roine and Zarko Markovic to fire on all cylinders.
