Iceland, Finland and Norway top the list of 136 nations, based on political participation, economic equality and rights like education and health.
The Middle East and North Africa were the only regions not to improve in the past year, with Yemen at the bottom.
The Philippines and Nicaragua both feature in the top 10.
The WEF has produced the report annually for the past eight years.

yikes, i forgot that there's no edit button anymore.
i wanted to add that i'm quite happy that some countries that have lower overall rankings like the UAE at 109 ranks number 1 in terms of educational attainment. Qatar's relatively ok at 53 for education even if it's at 115 overall.
Lebanon's overall rank is 123 but is also number one in health and survival
been following this report since i was in college. nice to know we improved to number 5 this year. it's sad that we're still the only country in asia that's on the top 20 though.
the study is not based on qualitative factors like society's wants or needs (that's quite difficult to measure), but on the quantitative indicators that measure the accessibility of economic opportunities, education, health and political empowerment compared to men.
fine, some societies might say that political or even economic participation of women might not be important. however, access to education, health and probability of one's survival should never be based on gender regardless of a country's economic situation imo.
Yeah.. at some part of life everyone gets a feeling that freedom is something different than just being free.
Tho I'm not a female I think some female r doing alright in Qatar...and I hope it changes for the positive....having said that I also think that some women who claim freedom r more impresioned than all, they just don't recognize it.
Well said. More often as per my studies I have seen UN and International Agencies weight every country and society in their own balance rather than knowing what exactly the people living in a particular society wants.
I guess it would depend from woman to woman as to what are those factors that make life in certain countries better, secure, and more comfortable than others. And these factors would defer based on each woman's wants, needs, beliefs, aspirations etc. personally I find life in the Middle East, namely in Qatar, to be far more enriching and fulfilling than any life I have ever known. Judging by the survey I guess I belong to a minority!
