Why French is necessary on QBS FM radio
From 1 pm till 4 pm, french transmission is on air on QBS radio FM 97.5, while driving I tuned on my radio and i was insane, i couldnot understand a single word. Why it is necessary to air in french, how many people in doha are french listeners. And if it is very necessary for a linguistic harmony among different nationalities then why not couple of hours should be dedicated for hindi/urdu transmission, I guess, Hindi/urdu listeners club is a widespread majority in qatar(Indians,Pakistanis and Nepalis) and above all, QBS will earn a huge amount of revenue in terms of advertisement. What is your say on it?
Arecel,
You are still being unreasonable, as I said, there is nothing wrong with the way any female QBS RJ, speaks or articulates the language. No female french speaker QBS RJ, sounds like you are trying to describe.
Just because you listen to a group of people speaking a particular language, do you think that you are well equipped to understand it? Do you think that your interpretation of how that group of people sound, is the language's universal and unique standard?
I guess not, so don’t judge and ridiculize when you don’t know what you are talking about as you might find yourself in being the one you are actually being ridiculous.
nic, my post doesnt point out to their level of french as i dont know french myself. what im driving at is that the rj sounds like she's out of breath all the time. when you are in the broadcasting media, it is very important that you speak clearly and paced your breathing well. if i had not worked with french then i would not have spot the difference. but i am surrounded by french speaking engineers so i can tell.
usapa na...
arecel,
there is nothing wrong with the French level of any female RJ in QBS. perhaps the problem comes from your level of understanding?!
OMG, people actually listen to QBS?
Odd....
What comes around, goes around....
the french rj sounds like she's out of breath all the time. worst is she speaks french as if there's spool in the side of her mouth, arghhhhh.... the french in my current company don't sound like her actually. why like this yani?
usapa na...
Now how did u get to the notion that I said something about french or france. I was just talking about QBS.
U r not just a foul mouth but u seem to be a wee bit retard to me too. I was just talking about QBS and its RJs.
Read before you comment on something.
oh yeah I know that, it's broadcasted from Washington, but I really bairly give the news any attention, it's pretty twisted, I just listen to the music

Nevermind. Just saw the post above. Sorry about that.
What station is Sawa here?
IDES, Sawa is the American channel in Arabic.
They have songs in Arabic/English alternatively, and their news are from the point of view of the US Department of Defense (In Arabic, they talk about Insurgents, Terrorists, ... Which is a terminology rarely used in any Arab channels.).
oh for whoever asked about the channel that broadcasts arabic and english alternativly it's called Sawa and it's on 92.6 the thing i hate about it though is that some of the songs are so old sometimes, and that they have a news brief every 20 minutes and then a long news readying every like 1:20 hours, am usually always tuned on when in my car

thank u slaash for the comment,
u said what i was planning to say
same same but different hahaha
MR. TSTOP before making fun of french just review the history, search france on google maybe u dnt know about it, just do ur research and see how much they are better than u before leaving ur comment...
whats wrong with 24 hours on QBS?? to be honest, i enjoy it specially between 1 and 4, and evening when it plays 70s and 80s songs...
you guys are safe as you are just listening to them, I get to see them on a daily basis. The way they roll their tongues, I am scared that the tongues might pop out of their skulls.
QBS is a sort of torture. I guess someone who is caught driving drunk should be made to listen to QBS for 3 hours. He will give up drinking. These hours can be made longer for more serious crimes. that way the prisons would be vacated and we could make schools there as there is an acute shortage of them in Qatar. But then I would request the QBS staff not to make someone listen to it for more than a day, because that would amount to capital punishment.
as for the following comment:
why those big communities in Doha, such as Indians, Pakistan, Philippines, etc... Set up their own radio stations transmitting on their own native languages? I am sure that with the cooperation of their communities they would be able to do so (if the government authorizes which I think they should)
There have been numerous proposals from Hundreds of investors to start FM channels in Doha. Radio 4 89.1 from Ajman too made many proposals but the Government doesn't want any private Broadcasters in Qatar.
I mean what fun is radio when you cant even call them on air and talk to them or have some sort of interactive program. Here you can only call them an leave a message with the wit ridden RJ who interprets and airs the message in his monotonous voice and f*** the old lady of a good witty message at times.
FINALLY if I were a judge I would Sentence FARSFARES to 24 hours of listening to QBS for his racial comments and for his arrogance. I would give him good quality headphones and blast the system to max. If I am not mistaken he is a BRAVE LEBANESE.
good point from roberto ^^

THE FRENCH TOUCH'
I have to agree that there is a lot to say about the DJs, speakers and programs from QBS...
But people have to understand that we cannot make everyone's happy with 1 radio in Doha. And by the way, thanks god there is one!!!
There are programs in English to satisfy the majority of people in Doha, and I got to hear some arabic or hindi/urdu programs on other radio stations.
So there is not only QBS in Qatar !
For some reasons QBS is broadcasting also in French and this must be because the founders or sponsors were either french of french speakers.
Even is the French community is still few thousand people (but actually growing quite fast) its the number of french speaking people that matter!
I was extremely surprised when I first arrived in Qatar 4 years ago about how many people can speak french over here.
Qatari/Lebanese/Syrian/Jordanian/Tunisian/Algerian/Moroccan/Egyptian... even American and Brits :-)
I was even more surprised when I found out that one of my egyptian colleague know 60's french songs better than me!!! (Thanks to QBS).
So my point is that, as a french I'm quite happy to be able to listen to news in French in the morning, listen to old and new songs, listening to talks and education programs in french and basically to keep a kind of link with my mother tongue (which I tend to loose while I'm here).
In addition I'm tempted to say that if I was not French but used to learn it at school, it could be a good way to practice and enhance my understanding of the language.
And to finish by a few facts and figures, see below why you should not underestimate the Francophonie!
Its a big thing :
In 1999, French was the 11th most common first language in the world, with 77 million first language speakers and another 51 million second language speakers, according to the Ethnologue Report.
French is the second most commonly-taught second language in the world (after English).
Another source, La Francophonie dans le monde 2006-2007, looks at it differently:
* 128 million Francophones: speak French (as a native or adopted language) fluently and use it on a regular basis.
* 72 million "partiel" Francophones: live in a francophone country but do not speak French regularly, due to limited knowledge.
* 100-110 million students of all ages: do not live in a francophone country, but have learned/are learning French in order to communicate with Francophones.
Quel manque d'ouverture d'esprit!
Je signe et confirme cela en l'écrivant en français afin que vous évitiez de reprendre mes fautes d'anglais au lieu de comprendre le sens du message!
Bonne traduction!
Maybe the French should stay in France. Wherever they go they cause problems with there oh la la....

Secondly you are a bloody racist for that comment
Thirdly I spell my name whichever way I want, you don't get the same liberty with a language, you can't spell it whichever way you want.

Another argument to delete french on QBS (or at list make it better)
when a take a taxi, and each times the driver figure I'm french, he put QBS, it's a nice thought so I don't tell him it's sounds like a crap for me
----------------------
Thus Spoke Zararootska
hahaha yeaa i beleive you that you speak frenSh !!!!
Maybe you will understand the advertisment between 1 and 4 hahaha
I will listen to it and I will keep complaining about it. You got any problem with that?
Anyway as I posted earlier, I am quite fluent in French so I can understand it pretty well so why shouldn't I listen?
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
Hahaha rather than correcting your spelling mistake, you are trying to start a needless argument with me. Funny guy.
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
so don;t give us ur suggestions keep it for you and don;t listen from 1 till 4 to QBS try to find another station
Fares let him talk english first well before he correct our words
It isn't my first language so excuse my little mistakes here and there.
By the way when did you hear me speak anything :-/
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
whyteknight speek english first well then tell me how it must be written.
I didnt know anyone actually listened to QBS, maybe its just one of those channels that the radio finds by mistake. Since I first came to Qatar, people have complained about QBS but it doesnt get any better
LOL... there is a doctor from Quebec in QBS who doesn’t make any effort to speak just a bit more international French! He goes all the way with his Quebecois accent and slang.
I'd love to go live in Quebec for a few years, and gain their accent (sounds nice!)... I'm mostly Parisien.
They just have a wide range of accents from Africa, Quebec and France.
It’s the contents that are very very poor (Qatari style, I would dare to say).
To be fair QBS is rubbash all round, apart from Nick's New Tunes. QBS in the morning makes me want to stick knitting needles in my ears.
Ah okay, I'm very much stuck at beginner status anyway :P Found it sometimes harder to follow than the International French Material.
Deepb,
The language itself is ok, only accents vary.
The kids' interviews are the best, the French section offers and ideal for beginners.
I'm not an expert in French, but most of them were not really using proper grammar. Didn't even sound like native French speakers in the first place.
why? as someone who's starting to learn french it makes me really happy because they interview kids and what not and I actually understand!

Don't do that IDES. It's just going to spoil your studies.
I'm starting my higher French level class today! so I will be tuning in to QBS more often now ;P

There are no fixed spelling for names fares. It's my name, I will spell it the way I like. I hope it's clear to you now.
I just assumed that someone who is a big fan of French will know it's not frensh but French. What's upsetting you though?
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
whyteknight better u fix the spelling of ur name before before fixing the spelling of people...
QBS use to be really good during the days or RJ elias, Newscast helen and nic
I second that.
QBS eagerly needs a new creative & innovative Management who must have experience in RADIO BROADCASTING
I mentioned Government because they need to issue licenses for any radio station broadcasting in Qatar, and I assume even more restrict for any radio station that would apply to broadcast in a foreign language.
QBS is no longer 100% govt owned. I dont see this happening
Xyned,
It’s not about the language. I find it great to have French broadcasting. The real problem is the quality of RJ's. They suck big time and so does their programs. Yesterday (yet again the Tunisian presenter) read for a boring looooooooong time the results of every single football match in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. WTF, does he think the entire world follows his personal and narrow taste?
As for broadcasting in other languages, why those big communities in Doha, such as Indians, Pakistan, Philippines, etc... Set up their own radio stations transmitting on their own native languages? I am sure that with the cooperation of their communities they would be able to do so (if the government authorizes which I think they should).
French may seem like a nuisance. Then again it makes for a good second european language broadcast. About hindi and urdu, you have the QBS urdu. QBS has had French hours since 80's.It is not going to change. On a seperate note that Bernie is such a cow.
i agree 100% with u .... there should be separate language program for URDU/HINDI as well or else they should stop French prime-time.
And by the way my second language during Post graduation was French so I have no problem understanding the broadcast ;-)
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
Are there any stations broadcasting from Qatar with urdu language? I think there is at 96.5 FM?
There should be more Stations serving different nationalities.
Lebaneseman I don't have problem with French programming or even a French channel if they want but there should be something to cater to the majority of the population in Doha.
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
I request QBS to increase the french program few more hours :P:P . WK are you happy now?:P
frankly speaking, the french program is useless
by the way, I did not know that most people finish their work between 1 and 4 pm.
outlife if you were so interested in the language, you would know it's "French".
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
this country is not only for pakistany , indians and filipino, there is aother nationalities are interested in frensh.
Id rather listen to the cats mating calls all night in my house rather than tune in to QBS. 15 years and it gets worse.
I've given up trying to convince myself that soon some one will "Learn" from Dubai or the Bahrain stations.
Sick of this teenage bf/gf dedication all time and also folks at QBS need serious lessons on "Genre Management"...Rock on second, pop the next! wtf.. Anyway like the rest of the folks commented, thank god for my Cd and USB Players..
Keep it real...keep it brutal \m/
QBS is not a radio. It's a compilation of bad Djs who by chance all got to Qatar, unfortunately. The morning hours when ppl go to work this irish dj is on air, who plays unbelievably old, unnecessary and wrong music - mainly country songs! from 50's and 60's!!!After that there is a french broadcast with old french songs and talks that nobody understands...Then before noon they play - ! BLUES AND SLOW JAZZ!!!!!! Looll)! AFter there is another french b/cast. Then some BBC broadcast of discussions of unnecessary topics and terrible music...Later a girl who tries to sound american and immitates conducting interviews with different performers:)Later in the evenin, there is disco music, but it's hard to call that music since other than drums and percussions you can't hear any other sound)))At night they go home and "music" is over. This is unfortunate for sucha a great country...
I'm learning french currently and I find it pretty useful because I tune in and I can actually understand what's going on. I do believe that there is an urdu channel that you can tune to, can't remember the number I just found it once while scanning. so the question is, why not?

QBS is one of the worst radio stations I've ever seen, we deserve something better in Qatar. For the time being the only solution is to carry your own music in the car or try to catch better stations from Dubai or Bahrain when they're available. This French program and the religious indoctrination in the morning are really boring.

anything to comfort the french ladies :P
lol basheer, can you tell me what other frequencies.
/\____/\___/\_______/\______________/\__ ____________________________________ You Lost Me!!
That's the problem Basheer, there is no other English langauage station...
Why we need to discuss this much on this issue,if u dont like it just tune to other freequencies thats it...........
I think the quality is pretty much on par to rest of the things in this region.
Thanks Bleu!
In my opinion, the main problem is the quality of broadcasting.
Take the Chinese Game, the Tunisian presenter on Thursdays, love to promote. It’s extremely naive, conducted in a very robotic manner, with no intelligent conclusions nor any benefits to the interviewee or the audience.
I call that an insult to intelligence.
Franchement, ça va pas de tout!
;)
I think it's 92.something that playss English and Arabic alternately.
I do wish there's a RADIO STATION that plays ENGLISH music, whatever genre...as long as it's ENGLISH...
Nic, it used to be it's own channel at 100.8 that broadcast for many hours... Then they reclaimed that channel for an Arabic channel, and for a few years there was NO French program.
Then they got this time-slot from QBS 97.5.
It would be really nice to have 2 new FM channels...
One for European languages: French, Spanish, Italian, German, ...
And one for Asian languages (Would also include Tagalog, Malay, Indonesian, ..., as well as Indian languages)
I am francophone and I appreciate (like many other francophones in Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE where QBS is broadcasted) the existence of a radio station transmitting in French language.
However I must say the quality of QBS French programs are very sub-standard with very unprofessional RJ’s. As extremely substandard interview skills and lack of any public interest, I would highlight the Tunisian radio presenter on Thursday’s. As an example of inadequate radio material, almost as bad as the English section, there is the horrible (almost torture) folklore African music and the Religious Indoctrinating Emissions on Friday afternoon’s programs.
i dnt think anyone is taking form ur money robertothebrave...
so whats bothering u!!!
1 hour is acceptable. but 3 hours is too much for french programe. people who drive back home from work (most of them between 1pm- 4pm) have no more entertainment on QBS.
again i repeat 3 hours is too much for our patience.i stop listening to QBS now.
Oh yeah I like French Fries at MC Donalds A LOT....
Why listen to QBS? Old DJ in the morning (espresso I think?) he is FREAKING RETARD he speaks like my Grandfather and a lady DJ who knows everything by nothing but just a reader, talking about Medicine, Health and those shitty stuff but she don't know what she's talking... I hate those 2 DJ's they are SUCKS!!! ahhh DIMITRI they one with GMC Pickup and he put his name on the back just in case he can't find his car in Parking area.
I thought the church was to please the Westerners. Didn't know it was for the Lebanese.
Because of the Lebanese people that would like to listen to french and how Qatar and Lebanon are united for their best interest...isn't it why there's a church here ...
Well except when the Lebanese infect the nightclubs here spending money they don't have and posing too much.....

yes, v really need a clear frequency for the channels mentioned by khattak..89.1 and 101.6 are best for bollywood numbers..the signals for these channels are very low sometimes and it really spoils our mood..
FM 89.1
FM 101.6
FM 106.2
FM 105.4
FM 104.2 (Bahrain)
FM 95.3 (Mallu :D)
All these channels from Dubai & Bahrain rock... but unfortunately, you cant hear it all the time :(

I haven't listened to the radio for at least 5 years...
Isn't there another frequency for Hindi/Urdu speakers?
Why is QBS necessary as a whole...
There's nothing about the station that makes me interested. I prefer to listen to my own music, or when I can pick up the Dubai stations... far far better....
I think it's more thousand of french, but whatever, I'm wondering there is still arabic on radio, there should have everything in French now ...
