- Attract and retain the right talent in key positions

- Key positions are filled based on merit and experience; also promotions, increments etc. all should be based on performance (not nationality)

- Transparent selection procedure in governmental departments

- Equal salary for similar positions (no differentiation based on nationality)

- Citizenship to skilled expatriates

- New ideas/innovation in science and technology (we need a Qatari company like Apple/Microsoft) through entrepreneurship development amongst local population. (not just offering sponsorship but also provide strategic direction)

What Qatar needs do

- Food security for the future ( farms here and abroad)

- Self sustaining drinking water production units (solar)

- Stop pollution of the Arabian Sea to ensure food supplies from it in future.

- Making Qatar a trading hub

- Investing in manufacturing

- Investing in exploring renewables

- Making education compulsary for men and women

- Motivate qatari entrepreneurs to start manufacturing facilities in the country

And finally, not be complacent because of their status now.

Kids Clubs in Hotels, Ski Dome Like Dubai's, pavements to walk on, more parks and gardens, traffic lights instead of crazy roundabouts, better drivers on the road, beaches for general use, pop concerts, better kids after school activities i.e dance schools etc - with highly qualified teachers....the list goes on.

The current rulers have done so much in so little time.. the following might already be there in their wish list..

Umm..err...How about more of high speed trains and trams ( like Manchester), build hubs outside of Doha ( and perhaps de-congest Doha), amusement parks like Six Flags and Disneyland (of course , air conditioned) in the US, an indoor snow resort( much like that in Dubai), more schools and Universities( knowledge hubs) and of course, affordable to all..bringing in more manufacturing industries .... conduct more awareness about Qatari heritage .. native qataris need to be proud of their culture..and the rest(including me) need to know about it too...there are very few hospitals around.. So, construct more multi-speciality hospitals and improve healthcare before it is ...Aww..just ignore me.. I may be blaberring.

brit, that concept works only if the foreign investments work. What if all those companies in which Qatar has invested fail? Imagine, Qatar invests in the Royal Bank of Scotland. Imagine, Qatar invested in Greece.

Morning Britexpat. You are right. Qatar is investing heavily in external projects for the future. This is not limited to oil and gas by any means.

Instead of develop their own country, they are investing abroad for the supply?

qatar should make ease for family visa procedure like Abu dhabi,dubai,sharjah and should have to enjoy employees in qatar with their family

Not true. Qatar is investing abroad with the clear aim of generating a sustained revenue stream for when the Gas runs out..
