All you can do is scare the living daylights out of those people, one way or another.

Sense does not work, at all.

That's one of the biggest dangers of blind following and ignorance no doubt! But if anyone was to ditch these terrible two and strive to gain knowledge of their faith and it's teachings, then at least the crimes would subside. But again that will only apply to those who care about religion and humanity.

Although it pains me to say it, LP does make a valid point.

You are fortunate that you have made the effort to learn about your religion. Most out there do not do that. They rely on religious leaders to guide them.

Unless those relgious leaders shout and condemn such practices - the ordinary person will not realise the sins they are committing.

The quote that Marco posted is in fact a verse from the Quran : " And when the female (infant) buried alive (as the pagan Arabs used to do) shall be questioned.

For what sin she was killed?(Surah Takwir) And when we read the explanation we learn how God will not let go on the day of Judgement those who killed their baby girls.

Similarly there are many many hadiths condemning this evil and warning of severe punishments for those who commit such crimes. As a Muslimah I can only quote from my faith the condemning of infanticide and I'm sure others of different beliefs may have their own.

BUT I'm sure you know LP, that a person who commits such abominations fear no God, no Court, and no retribution, in heaven or on earth, hence the atrocities still exists.

Murder especially of this nature should surely carry a death penalty IMO. That will at least serve as some kind of deterrent though I know there will still be those willing to risk even death to do what they do.

Whatever. But for religion to make sense, it should have the LOUDEST voice AGAINST these pratices. Where are they? I can't hear them.

anyone who says all these social deformities are linked or practiced in that part of world from ancient time has limited, one-dimensional & superficial knowledge of ancient vedic system. Female Infanticide is not the only social deformity happened, in last 1000 yrs, there are many to name.

even as someone said, stopping dowry system (by govt) will not going to work; these are social problems, created in hundreds of years, will vanish in due time by social changes; there’s awakening for sure.

MN, you need to refresh it, it's wrong to say 'Vedic Aryan tribes invaded 'India'.'

secondly, you suitably forgot 'shakti' factor in vedas; to blame vedic scriptures is purely incorrect,

I say, this practice is not inherited from vedic ages but is the result of socio-cultural changes happened in last 1000 yrs heavily influenced by external cultural influences (read arabic/persian)

LP: A chauvinistic interpretation of religion is not religion. The custom of female infanticide was widely practiced by the Vedic Aryan tribes who invaded India. It is these Vedic nomads who introduced this depravity into India .From a historical records, it’s known that the Nomadic Aryan had rather rigid patriarchal views when it came to female child. The Vedas were known as warriors thus wanted male children to boat their military capacity. . Indeed, so deep-rooted was the desire for male children that the Vedas prescribe numerous prayers for male offspring.

Again, a Chauvinistic interpretation of religion is not religion.

always makes me cry. The fact that for centuries on people of different cultures have practiced infanticide, and the practice still exists is truly saddening. And whilst I would never want any baby of any sex to be murdered, it's staggering how majority of the time it's female infanticide.

Women today have made enormous advancements in various avenues and yet male superiority dominates many a mindset, causing parents to actually want to kill their baby girls.

Yes education can help minimize the evil but in truth some people are simply too arrogant and narrow minded that all the teachings in the world will not avail them.

No religion, as far as I am certain, condones this practice yet people do it itself proves the perpetrators couldn't care less what even their God has to say let alone fellow mortals.

Sickening indeed!

i sightly agree with LP,

religion played a MAJOR role in forming culture(s), and all these social deformities are result of socio-cultural imbalances, heavily influenced by religion(s)

LP am against religions too. In this case culture is common among all religions. Be it Hindu , Muslim or Christian.. you need a huge sum of money to marry a girl.

Ideas to prevent infanticide and feticide in India and China....

1-Spread the word and make sure that your voice is heard and these ideas are implemented.

2-Indian and Chinese males should stand up to their own moms and dads when they start chirping about unwanted female children.

3-Come down hard on those who practice it ( I don't mind the death penalty to be implemented here )

4-Refuse marriage of women into households or be very careful of families that have only male children or a very high percentage of males. Chances are high that they did you know what.

5-If you have a female child; rub it in other people’s faces by educating her and providing her the same opportunities as a male child. This is the one thing that makes female killing folks look foolish and dumb.

6- Try male infanticide for a change!

Hey TB,, u back?

Yes , and its never gona change any sooner. Indian still has a huge segment which is under BPL. The growth and beneficiaries were the middle and upper class only. It could have been much much better and sorted long back if we had a better governance.

I saw a pic recently in which a handicapped rickshaw man with one leg and one hand cycling with two passengers for his meal ticket, in a country which has 400billion foreign reserve and a trillion economy !!!

Culture and religion cannot be separated. I accuse the religions to create mind-sets. And if you don't like it, then it's your problem.

Brit is right LP, the problem is poverty and burden!! and some fukcin culture which needs lots of money to bring up and marry a girl !!! Dowry!!! Gold !!!

and who cares !! kinda governance headed by a eunuch PM!! recently came on the TIMES cover as " underachiever" !!

In most cases (East and West), It is more to do with the "burden" , rather than religious aspects.

Baby hatches are an excellent idea - but who will pay for the costs of running them. I doubt whetehr the government can afford this. religious bodies should help in this , with Churches, temples, Mosques being used as drop off points..

However, the main thing is to change the mind set ..
