Segregation in the gym for GCC women

MarcoNandoz-01
By MarcoNandoz-01

The rights of women in GCC society often lead to a contentious debate (even among Westerners Expats who cannot accurately speak for these women. Some would argue that women who choose to wear a full veiled Abaya are actually more liberated than those who are free to wear a bikini, since the long cloth effectively covers them from men's prying eyes, etc.
The GCC countries regularly experiences temperatures well over 100F, which makes working out outside quite difficult):
(And even if you can endure the heat you must do so with covered arms and legs if you're a GCC woman out in public). Coupled with the region's extremely high rates of obesity and diabetes (one of the highest in the world), limiting women work out areas to a certain schedule or facility to exercise is a definite wrong decision.
What made this recent policy a reality, I wonder. Why now?

Well mind ya, even western women enjoy secregated sports facilities, as I went to the swimming pool (Hamad aqua)at first i was worried what to wear, how the people will be dressed, and I saw ALL western women with leggings and trunks!! Just because it feels comfortable when you wear whatever you like!

As where I am from we are limited in our swimwear, only professional swimwear in permissable, so enjoy here to be yourself, IT IS OKAY!!!!

Besides that, its even better to go out covered in the heat, due to the high risks of skin cancers and other complications related to sunburn etc....

Well, fact is, there are a lot of fat women out there...everywhere.

And men of course.

So I think the segregation at gyms, which does only happen in certain countries, is not the main culprit.

By nomerci• 26 Apr 2012 15:18

tinker, that is not only common in Asians, you see the same things in the West too, maybe not as much, but they do happen.

I think we also need to ask ourselves whether the obesity problem spreading out (no pun) in the Gulf is to do with a lack of available exercise options. It may be part of the reason, but is it a substantial part?

Is it really fair to say that the reason many women here are above their ideal weight is because they lack access to women's only gyms?

Or would it be fairer to say that gym attendance, even under socially agreeable conditions, just isn't something they are into?

I am starting to see why in Saudi this sort of development was ridiculed by Saudi women as a "Let them get fat" campaign.

Are these laws perversely aimed at discouraging women from attending the gym?

In the world's fattest country? Probably. But the point is also that the women's only gyms are poorly equipped as compared to the men's and women's hours are generally during the day when many women work.

I would agree that there need to be more places catering fro women. However, the same could be said for men also. couldn't it ?

Brit, Mandi goes to one place. Aspire. Which isn't easily accessible to everyone.

The OP has confused the issue with the title and the article..

If the issue is regarding the lack of gymnasiums or exercise places specifically catering for women - then I would agree that it needs to be addressed.

As Mandi says - she is quite happy with the place she utilises.

or don't want to understand...

actually, Sajmarhab....

The article is talking about the fact that gyms for women only are few and that those that are there are understocked with equipment and that female trainers are lacking!!!

The discussion is a good thing for women who want to go to gym, but have to cover up because of the men around....

Dear Miss Mimi, MN and Fubar and Tinkle..

When our women insisting that they need a separate GYM for women only. bcoz they cant mingle with men. then what is your problem. this is their freedom to do excercise. and finally the goverment also agreed to do so.

then Y you guys are so much interested in our religion, that we have to do this, that, like this, like that. In this most common it is related to our ladies, and you wants our ladies should remove their abaya, niqab, head scarf, and live a life like yours...

please allow us to live, becoz we love, respect our religion and we strictly follow the teaching of our belowed prophet Muhammad (SAW).

I know many local couples in the compound I live in choose to go to the gym together. The woman doesn't wear abaya, but rather loose gym clothes and hijab, and I guess with her husband being there she's comfortable.

Than again, we don't get a lot of bachelors or teenage boys in our gym.

I don't use a gym, so maybe I don't understand.

But, why not let women use the men's (or should I say shared) area, IF THEY WANT. And then provide a separate section for women who want to work out away from men.

Why should the women who are comfortable working out around males be forced to use the women's only section? What if a husband and wife want to go to the gym together?

Or am I just not really understanding the issue?

Ok, well that really sucks that men and women can't work out together now. Going to the men's gym was the only way you could ensure a good workout, even if you had to put up with all the learing.

Well. Lots of women you hear them constantly complaining about the poor facilities at female- only gyms because. First off it is too hot to exercise in my abaya when you are working out at a female-only gym but the trainer is a man!

When women leave the ladies' gym, put abaya on over their sports kit to walk down the corridor to get to a class or the changing rooms because they haven't provided them with the separate entrance.

And then you also have the inadequate numbers of women trainers and staff at the reception and changing rooms are more like self-served, lack of weights available and or treadmills.

riszk: I don't see any reason for this thread to be locked down or deleted. I believe we are all intelligent and well educated adult men and women with our independent ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and outlook on life, so take a chill pill mate.

I think either u or the writer have a common misconception

Yes female only gym halls do exist but it's still not a segregation. You see there is the main "public and co-ed" hall for everybody to use, male and female....and there r separate women halls for those who "Choose" to not mingle with men. So it's not imposed upon u nor prohibited for u to use the common area, and if u have limitations in the female's only hall it's due to "Your Choice" to work out separately

The gym I go to has different days and timings for men and women...say Monday it is for men in the evening and women in day time and Tuesday it is for women in evening and men in day time... Fridays and saturdays are kept open for all, all through the day. Guess that provides equal access to women with full gym. However this debate would be good if said women themselves have their opinion here rather than us, may be they are just OK with the schedules and facilities and we expats are poking our nose, as usual, unnecessarily....:)

Ok. Well despite the poorly chosen picture and the horrible writing style, I think the question here is about "women's only times" at gyms.

As a regular gym goer I can say that they are a crock, first of all they are always during the day (and usually only for 2 or 3 hours) which is useless for working women, and there are almost never attendants around to enforce the timings.

However, I've also found that the places that offer women's only gyms only put about half of the gym equipment in the women's gyms, so they are equally useless.

I was under the impression this rule was always there except for the gym's in 5- start hotels. Anyways, if this is a recently implemented rule then the gym guys would need time to develop separate facilities and in the meantime they may have created some stop gap facility. But, I am also given to understahnd that their are separate timings for men and women, then what could be the issue.

Before you criticizing the Muslim woemns dress code, heat, etc... just try to learn Y we wear a different dress code than other religiouse people in the world.

It is bcoz, the ALLAH (SW) instructed us in his Quran to wear such and such dress code. that we (Muslim men and Women) follow without any ?. and we submit our life to him only.

bcoz we love the creator, and respect him.

so atleast the sake of the discussion (criticism etc) please read the Quran, or visit a good scholar and ask your doubts.

Now please dont point to some muslim name lads who, doesnt follow the Quran... and say y they are like that...
