Qatar is setting up a new research centre in an effort to improve its cityies' traffic systems and road safety, it was reported on Wednesday.

Under a new memorandum of understanding, Texas Transportation Institute (TTI), a member of the Texas A & M University, will set up the unit to reduce road accidents in Qatar through development of better traffic and road safety systems, Qatar Tribune reported.

Called the Qatar Transportation Centre (QTC), the initiative will be engaged in a five-year research programme to study and find solutions to Qatar’s traffic problems, the paper added.
Eyad Masad, the assistant dean for Research and Graduate Studies, told the paper: “The mission of QTC will be to assist Qatar in developing a world-class, safe and efficient traffic and transportation system which will meet the existing as well as the future needs of the country."

QTC will also function as a link among various government agencies, non-government agencies as well as international experts in transportation safety, he added.

rezymalik ,

To answer your question:

"radars installed to avoid overspeeding, installation of newly Traffic signals... widening of roads, rehabilitation & re-construction" is done by foreign workers

while

"control over traffic" is done by Qataris!

so what happens between now and the time the study/review is released? They should have talk about short- and long-term continues review so immediate action can be taken and at least minimize if not totally eradicate those worst accidents!

Besides the land cruisers syndrome and the absence of flashing Indicator Lights, a more unpredictable common error I witness almost every day is people that don’t know how to take a roundabout within the same lane. often they start on one side, go to the middle, until they cut off the car on the opposite side, just to go back to the middle and finish on the side they have started.

3 lanes to go through a roundabout!!!

that you cannot judge idiots at the test centres.

They just do pocket parking, drive for a min on road and get a license.

Road ethics and courtesy should be taught religiously.

Deepb,

That is what eventually will actually take place...

Wait don't they need to do a study of the proposed 5 year study before thinking of doing anything and then study how to set up a study for making the necessary changes? I think I confused myself.

FS,

We should never loose hope and we should never fear to expose areas for improvement even if it will cause discomfort in the establishment.

If not for us, it will eventually benefit those who will come in the future ;)

It’s a looooooooooooooong 5 year to study the obvious, but at least it’s a public acknowledgement of the problem and a beginning of a loooooooooong but urgent path for improvement!

Good initiative...but it will work only if people are ready to change their 'I own this road' attitude and driving skills..
