The Qatar women's basketball team's here!

Wanderer
By Wanderer

They've been here for quite some time, but this was the first time they were 'seen' in action. And boy, did they rock...

They played against the Kuwait national women's team and whipped them 52-15. I was totally taken aback about how well they performed.

They were professional, organised and ruthless. A few of the girls were plain simple awesome. The whole atmosphere was electric, what with the chants of a hundred female voices...

But the truth, ladies and gentlemen, is that women's basketball in Qatar is very much alive and kicking.

Way to go, ladies.

Stand up, take a bow, and make us proud.

P.S: Sorry for the not-too-good picture, this was the best i could manage! Also, the audience were predominantly women. I counted a total of about 10 men to 500 women. They've made a good beginning. I hope the sport catches on.

It was amazing to know that, basketball women is existing in Qatar. The first time I arrive here in Qatar-the first time I enquire about was 'Is basketball women played here in Qatar'? I was hoping to watch one. Back home when I was in college I was a Team Captain-basketball women although I stand 4'11. Height doesn't matter-I was the "point guard". I wish I could extend my help and be a part of the team here or at least be given an opportunity to watch one. To the players- kip it up and goodluck on all your games!!!!!!!

if you enquire at the womens centre at aspire they should be able to give you a schedule. As far as I know they havent finalised the team yet even so things could take some time. I'll be following so as soon as i have any information i'll post it on here for common knowledge of others. It's going to be an amazing season. I know that they've taken a few players from ireland and egypt.....Good Luck Qatar. We're behind you 100% ladies!!!!!!!

hey guys,

I have a friend who coaches basketball at aspire for kids. she's playing on the national team this year. as far as i know if they like your skills and they want you its not an issue of height or nationality. all they will do is give you the passport so you can play. if anyone is really interesed in the national team then i can ask her for details. as far as i know its all arranged by aspire womens sports centre. just provate message me. but training starts in september during ramadan. it takes place for 2 hours 3 times a week i think like 4.30 - 6.30 on normal days. ramadan training will obviously ake place after iftar. so you gotta be able to commit.

thanks

THEY SHOULD CONSIDER ALSO THE HEIGHT OF THEIR PLAYERS. BALANCE THE TEAM, THEY HAVE SMALL GUYS BUT THEY ARE FAST AND THEY HAVE ALSO BIG GUYS TO REBOUND AND CONTROL THE GAME. AND THEY HAVE THE CORRECT PRACTICE AND REGULAR EXERCISE.

Basketball is also a good Team Building activity. It fosters interdependence on one another, teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship. It helps release stresses from work and develop a good interpersonal and working relationship with one another.

...and hope we can get more and more locals (men and women alike) to participate in different kinds of sports...

...so that Qatar may never 'hire expatriates' to do their 'job' for every Olympics events. LOL

Hoop it up girls!!!

WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) has a great following in the US. There about 12 teams. My hometown favorite, the Houston Comets, sadly suspended operations this year. That is unfortunate because women's basketball is very entertaining.

I guess I know who to cheer for now!

Nice post. :)

I remember many years ago when my sister was placed on our school's boys basketball team because she was the only girl interested in playing...and a few other schools, including the French School I believe, had the same issue.

To see a full-fledged womens team for Qatar (not just a local high school) that actually PLAYS WELL is more proof of how far womens' sports have come here in the past 20 years. Represent! :D

And another wonderful hijack...

Ladies, I was there, and the team really did well. This lady who posted the topic should have been among those screaming fans...

Cuteydog and Supernurse, You two going off on a tangent... I think you defeat the purpose altogether. It's a sad thing that every topic has to be thus hijacked with useless drivel...

Please, just give credit where it's due. These girls are pioneer in their own rights. Even if you don't respect them, please dont abuse them.

Just think about it. Thanks.

I notice that the woman in the middle looks all of 2 foot tall, forgive me, but don't you have to be over 7 foot to play basketball?
