Qatar crime rates below global levels

MarcoNandoz-01
By MarcoNandoz-01

According to Wikipedia Qatar is a country with a very low crime rate, you will be told when you come to Qatar. Which is true: However, there are things that are not considered a crime in Qatar which are considered a crime in the West. For example, consumption of alcohol unless you are a permit holder or in a legit hotel/nightclub, having sex outside marriage or with the same sex in a major office in this country and punishable by imprisonment deportation and possible lashing if the couple caught in the act are Muslims.
So have you been a victim of crime? If so what happened?

Since I don't know the source. Can you enlighten me as to which crimes were measured when coming up with these fugures?

I think Qatar is the safest country on earth, despite a some may think some crimes are not reported,,, but for sure we don't have group of people running in the street looking for foreigners and beat them up or stab for the reason of having different color or religion.

Some people think violiting trafic rules is crime, I think thank god that we are worried about that in here.

So if Qatar is the safest country on earth, where is the most dangerous place on Earth, I think its South Africa.

flexi, I cannot say for sure that voilence happens against every maid in the qatari families...some families may be definitely decent in this respect. Culture wise qataris are not very different to saudis and so you can't expect that they would behave differently.

Well, you have to make your own opinions that may or may not tally with mine. Its fine either way.

KR, you can not generalize based on some rare incidents. Firm conclusions, as in you first post, based on assumptions is something I will have to disagree with.

flexicode, Quite a few times I have noticed children of qatari nationals spitting on their maids' faces in malls as they cannot use force on them to show their anger. It's sad that their parents do not even reprimand their children after that. This tells the story of what goes on within four walls.

By flexicode• 19 Sep 2012 19:09

KR, only a postman can have a little idea, if at all, how are you so sure what is happening within the confines of four walls in every Qatari household. I was just wondering.

By nomad_08• 19 Sep 2012 18:52

most people in Qatar are busy with their work to commit crime unlike in poorer countries where crime is prevalent because of unemployment.

Ill treatment of household assistants and voilence against maids happens almost in every qatari household within the four walls...and the same are never reported or not considered a crime at all.

If reported, that would possibly invert the ratio!

People manouver themselves in dangerous situations. Just as fubar, I have never been a victim in my country, nor in any other country I stayed, nor in Qatar, But if you go to the Cube, it's your own risk!

I see far worse on a Friday night in Doha. The motor vehicle death rate in Qatar exceeds even hearth disease and cancer in Qatar (and is more than 10 times that of the US).

Once again, monkey, your comments and mentality are only underlining my point.

The driving here would be a criminal offense in many countries; and many of the accidents bad driving cause would carry felony charges in Europe and North America.

One needs to think hard to find something worth being acknowledged as crime except for things like poor conditions of the laborers and confiscation of the passport by the sponsor. Many on this board have highlighted unreported crimes. Forgive my ignorance but can someone share an eyewitness account or first hand information on a crime that went unreported. No, I don't say there are no crimes in Qatar but it is negligible as compared to most countries and well within the controls of the authorities making Qatar largely a secure country. One can live for years together in Qatar without falling victim to a crime. I agree with the findings till date.

Politicians in other countries make a habit of over-emphasizing how much crime there is in their societies, and then announce big plans on how they will reduce it.

It's a fear factor thing - if you don't vote for me, you will be mugged while walking down the street by drug pushing prostitutes.

Conversely there are other countries that try to keep perceptions of crime very low. They want people to feel safe and secure, so that they are grateful to their leader for doing such a good job.

Counting only how many sponsors keep the Passport, of people under their sponsor, crime graph will shoot to the moon

I mean we can do stuff here that we would never be able to do back from where we used stay in SL, but I also agree that a lot of crime does go unreported and unmentioned in the news publications.

That said as always people must remember the whole "low crime doesn't mean no crime" bit, and take precaution nonetheless.

Personally the worst thing that I can think of was getting my wallet robbed right off my bag at the "New World Center" that too at a time when our budget was truly restrained. The shopping center staff were totally uncooperative and assured us that their CCTV cams would show zilch..in short "don't bother with searching"

I was never the victim of crime in my home country, and I haven't been the victim of crime in this country.

Therefore am I safe to assume both are equally safe?

almost all regular countries have mafia, i have yet to find one here,

crime is surely less, IMO ( i never says 'no crime')

we need to differentiate between petty incidents, violations, and the Crime.

Once someone took the fire extinguisher out and the second time they stole the carseat??? Still can't figure that one out and it seems only a fraction of the population even knows what a carseat is for.

I agree about the labourers issue. What i would like to kniow is the source and what is considered a crime as part of the findings.

"However, there are things that are not considered a crime in Qatar which are considered a crime in the West. For example, consumption of alcohol unless you are a permit holder or in a legit hotel/nightclub, having sex outside marriage or with the same sex in a major office in this country and punishable by imprisonment deportation and possible lashing if the couple caught in the act are Muslims."

"Major Office" ?? :O)

Regarding the above as crimes. this is because this is the law here. We as expats come here knowing what we are getting into.

A great deal of crime goes unreported in Qatar, so these figures are largely meaningless. A good example is all of the labor law violations.

Sure britexpat and painther (and their stuff) is safer, but the same is hardly true for the poor laborer.
