Public library system in Qatar
By Think-Twice •
Does Qatar have a well-established public library system? Is there a large central public library? Do public libraries have large volumes of academic books and journals? How about universities there? Are their libraries open to public, incl. expat?
Thanks.

was canceled my friend. There is no more Public Library project, that is what I heard .
I once read that Qatar will have a public library on the corniche. its been more than four years now and the construction hasn't even started yet.
Maybe the Qatar Government does not want to waste money on libraries and books
Yea there are book stores, but unlike the libraries, they are useless too, actually Family bookshop which is located on Merqab street is quite useful. But Jarir doesnt have a good collection of book.
I recently ordered 3 books from Amazon.com, they got here safely, but it took about 26 days and that was the fast derlivery service. If it was regular, probably took around 2 months. You could even order from Barns & Nobles.
Hello,
Thanx all for the advice. Does Doha have a few good English bookstores? I hope there are a few as it presents itself as an educational centre of the Middle East.
Also, if we order books from Amazon.com, they can be delivered to Qatar w/o any restriction, is it correct?

It's all changed now.
I remember going to the Dar Al Kutub library once. the book selection is awful. Its a shame that Qatar has an education city but it does not has a well stocked library.
Here in Canada we have a network of libraries. You can get almost any book you want, even if it is not in your library.
I can say that my university has the biggest collection of books in North America after Harvard.
When I used to go to Qatar during summer vacations I had a haaard time finding books.
Thanks King,
I realy appriciate your effort to show us the direction for these librarys, You are really a helpful guy ISA i will try these location after working hours.
Thanks
Ali

Since it's vaccation time, maybe can keep kid and kid-in-me occupied with books!!
Cheers,
I guess that my friend e46 is talking about the one near 'Al Ghanem Al Qadeem' or 'The Old Ghaneem' which is near the 'Souq'[Jaber & Asiri]. Will try to give you an idea here about the location. You are coming now from the Corniche, no matter from where you are coming everyone know the big roundabout there that got those 'Big Vessels' with falling water. Suppose that you are coming from the 'Meuseum' side when you approach the Roundabout, if you go straight you will find a traffic lights there. Taking that Straight you will see 'The Shell' we don't want all of that, just to put you in the location and surrounding environments.
Now back again ...when you approach the roundabout 'Big Vessels' from the 'Museum' side take this roundabout left and the corniche would be now behind you. You will see a small traffic light, take this one straight. You will find a small roundabout ... take it straight also .. you will reach another roundabout, before reaching that one just look at your left side and you will see the 'Genreal Public Library' or 'Dar Al Kutub' when you reach the roundabout just make a U Turn to get to the library. 'This is No.1'
Another library is near 'Al Merqab' street when you reach the street from the other end [Subway and Giant stores Side]. In this case, you are coming for example from 'Ramadah towards Salwa Road' you will leave 'Ramadah' behind you and before you reach 'Medmac Flyover' just go down instead to the 'Medmac Roundabout' take the roundabout right as you are going down to 'Al Sudan Roundabout' [The whole area is still closed I guess :(] no problems .. going toward the roundabout and before you go inside 'Al Merqab Street' like 200 or 300 Meters. Look to the right and you will find a Library their, and I guess this one is 'Sheikh Ali Al Ansari Library'. 'This is no.2'
You have also another one in Rayyan known as 'Al Rayyan General Library', there is also one in Al Khour and also known as 'Al Khour General Library' in addition to the mentioned libraries, you can find in libraries 'Qatar University' and 'The British Council' located in 'Al Sadd'
Wish you best of the luck my friends, happy reading.
The easiest directions are as you come from the direction of Marriott travel over the Ras Abu Abboud flyover until you come to the roundabout. Head straight and you come to the Dar al Koutub (Library) roundabout. It's immediately on your right. There's a school just opposite.
Not sure about the timings but I believe their number is 438-9888.
E46M3,
can you please give the exact location of library is everyone allowed to enter if yes whats are the timing for the same.
Thanks
Ali
Hi e46M3,
Can you give the details about the library and if possible, telephone number?
regards
Paul
There is a public library in Qatar. Only one. Anyone wishing to leave the country for good must get a clearance letter from the library saying they have no outstanding books. And hardly anyone knows it exists.
