Photography in Qatar?

Hello all..

I have been reading this forum for a couple of days now and finally decided to join. I am an American that just accepted a position with a company that is going to be shipping me off to Qatar in a few weeks! I am married and have 3 children but I am coming for a year alone. They are staying here for now but who knows for the future.

Anyway I will be living in Doha and working at Al Udeid Air Base and I have a few questions that maybe some of you can answer.

I am a semi-professional photographer here in the states and will be bringing my gear with me over there. How are the locals about being photographed? Is anything off limits? I know here in the states and most other places public is public and you are basically allowed to take photo's anywhere. I do not want to get into a bad situation when I get there and start snapping photo's in my off time and get into trouble or cause problems. Any info would be great!!

I have never been to that part of the world unless you count 120 days during Desert Storm in Saudi. I am wanting to take it all in and enjoy it as much as possible while I am there and do not under any circumstances want to have any social blunders.

Thanks anyone that can help with any of that!!
Mark

I run the QL Photo Group.

Join Here: ---> http://www.qatarliving.com/group/qatar-living-photography

I try to take the group out every second Tuesday.

Pictures on the base are prohibited, and just about anywhere with 'no photography' signs. These are generally limited no defence/military areas and some ministries and palaces.

The usual rules of photography apply otherwise. Ask first and 9 time out of 10 you'll find people are only too happy to be snapped, especially in the digital age when you can show them the shot immediatly.

For examples of Qatar photography, here's my flickr page for Doha: ---> http://www.flickr.com/photos/b_2_d/sets/72157607009415143/

welcome to Qatar :D

well you can take photos in public places, but be sure not to take photos for local girls/women cuz this will make'em mad at you!

try searching in flickr.com for photos taken in Qatar, you will get better understanding on how most photos were taken
