Had this question ever raised in your mind?

A good read from Mitch Albom

but what the meaning they represent is real.

But does numbers have any value in our life?

Haha, good point Thelonius. You tripped me up on my own reasoning. Fiat money is, as you say, also conceptual, and therefore abstract.

But the paper it's written on is real, and I can exchange that piece of paper for goods or services with other people who want a bit of paper.

Ultimately however you are right. Money is only valued because it has a value that is recognised by others. But value is an abstract concept that is no more real than the numbers themselves that are used to visually show its quantity.

We all agree that a numeral is a representation of a number, and a number is an abstract concept.

So my actual question is the "The Origin of that Concept"

What do we teach in school?

What about animals?

it is a waste of time to explain to you.

If you do not want to assume then let others assume, if you are against the word "assume" then scientist research was based intiallay on assumptions and these assumptions were translated to facts through verfication process.

Thelonius why are you contadicting your self? I really advise you to relax little bit.

The old days, no one calls it One. They either called it alone or nothing. That's their numerical value.

then one day someone got tired of calling alone and instead using the word One.

Sun is alone.

Animals goes in pairs - Two

Human can't go for more than 6 days without rest.

Some numbers are easy to conceptualise as we can relate them to the things we see...but there are other kinds of numbers that we cannot visualise...like negative numbers, irrational numbers, imaginary numbers ( sq. rt of negative quantities)

All these numbers have been invented to assist us in our scientific endeavours.

By Straight Arrow• 1 Sep 2013 13:42

then these number would have been useless if no one grapped them and benifited others.

We aslo should be thankful for those made us benifit from these numbers.

By fubar• 1 Sep 2013 13:41

Numbers are a concept of quantity. Concepts are abstract.

Money is real.

If you cannot see the distinction between cash, and numbers, there is no point continuing this line of debate.

then it shows that you have no feelings.

Does this mean that you will not have any kind of reaction when a deducution happened to your salary?

concept of Zero? who has used it earlier?

I understand without ZERO whole mathematics is again a "0"

Perhaps people are having a tough time mentally distinguishing between numerals and numbers.

By Knight Returns• 1 Sep 2013 13:28

Stacey, Its mainly the concept of zero and its use to form large numbers, that the original poster is looking to discuss on.

"Numbers" are abstract. Why is that so hard to fathom?

Nobody invented it. Not the indians nor the greeks nor some guy with hard to pronounce name.Definitely not Rippie's people (or his ancestors - from whichever side he thinks he's more related to).

It exists in the nature and that's where it originated from. What the human did was to give the number a name.

In the desert we can understand there is air or wind by the dust, but what about the countries where there is no dust?

Plato and Aristotle spent time considering the philosophy of numbers. I trust their reasoning.
