Men should have sex slaves, says female Kuwaiti politician

KUWAIT CITY // Salwa al Mutairi, a former parliamentary candidate, said in a video posted on You Tube last month that sex slaves should be legal and prisoners from war-torn countries, such as Chechnya, would make suitable concubines.

Ms al Mutairi said she asked Saudi muftis what the Islamic ruling was on owning sex slaves while on a trip to Mecca because she had a male colleague who was "young and something of a womaniser".

The mufti told her it is not haram, or forbidden, she said. "The context must be that of a Muslim nation conquering a non-Muslim nation, so these jawari have to be prisoners of war."

Jariya is an Arabic term meaning "concubine" or "sex slave". The plural of the word is jawari.

Ms al Mutairi said free women must be married with a contract but, with concubines, "the man just buys her and that's it. That's enough to serve as marriage".

The ruling was confirmed by "specialised people of the faith" in Kuwait, she said. "They said, 'That's right, the only solution for a decent man who has the means, who is overpowered by desire and who does not want to commit fornication, is to acquire jawari'."

Offices could be opened to run the sex trade in the same way recruitment agencies provide domestic labourers, Ms al Mutairi suggested.

"One of the countries where [I see this trade is possible] is Chechnya. The country is at war with another state, so there are some captives for sure. I say go and buy those captives, they might just die of hunger over there. I say go and buy them and sell them to merchants here in Kuwait who may otherwise commit a sin."

"I don't see anything wrong with it, nothing at all," she said, adding that the caliph Haroun al Rashid had one wife and more than 2,000 concubines in his possession when he died.

"So there's no shame in it and it is not haram, our Sharia law allows it," she said.

Haroun al Rashid ruled over an area covered by modern-day Iran, Iraq and Syria 12 centuries ago.

Ms al Mutairi's video on You Tube has been viewed more than 84,000 times since it was uploaded on May 24.

Ms al Mutairi finished 23rd in the fifth constituency with more than 1,200 votes in the parliamentary election in 2009.

Candidates who finish in the top 10 are selected for parliament.

"One woman alone is enough trouble." My husband says the same thing all the time!Actually the whole polygyny thing is certainly not everyone's cuppa but I must say its hardly a east/west matter. Cos here in Qatar alone the most people I know who are co wives are Westerners married to fellow westerners(and a majority of whom are Americans and converts to Islam) And I must say I find American/western women more happier and comfortable with polygyny than any of our Asian/Middle eastern folks. It is they,my western friends, who made me realize the benifits of having a co wife and why they are truly pleased with their situation. But again its not to everyone's capability or wanting, so Islam does not make this mandatory and rather makes it an option. And it does come with many strict rules and guidlines hence cannot be compared to having mistresses and random extra marital affairs. All in all no one should be oppressed and forced in regards to polygyny..period!

khalid, it is said that culture is older than religion and in this case, it is. the origin of polygamy has nothing to do with islam. before the prophet's time the pagans in arabia were living in tribes and many would die fighting for their tribes. widows needed a support and the tribe needed more people to make their tribe stronger. thus men were allowed to marry more than one. the prophet only put a limitation on the number of wives a man could have at a time. those days, slavery was common in the pagans and the jewish culture as well. having female slaves or concubines was also not looked down upon. even prophet had a christian female slave from egypt after the death of khadija and he married around nine women in his life.

but now the times have changed...

In the Middle East it is a part fo many cultures.  Women never had so much say in this matter.

Out west it has never been excepted, nor will it ever be.  Women have the same rights as men, so does this mean a woman can have more than one husband if she wants?

I personally wouldn't want to marry more than one woman.  One woman alone is enough trouble. ; )

At least Muslims marry their mistresses, unlike what you would see in the west, where I know many men have a side relationship for 15/20 years and the wife knows about it and every body knows but they can not get married nor he wishes to divorce his old love (now that's hypocrisy), I know some 1 who had a long relationship with his mistress and she became pregnant, now he is not willing to divorce the wife because he also have children from her, so Islam come in cases like these and give you a solution by exercising the option of getting married to the other lady. Also there are many reasons why muslims could marry another wife, could be for wanting to have more children or any child, could be for medical reason, etc, and statistically women are more than men in the world, so from a community and social perspective it solve many problems. thanks

when I get the usual cruise by comments and air kissess from locals and other nationalities alike (sorry to say never from a western expat, I speak as I find), when I say to them either my husband is close by or would they want their sisters or wives treated like this, they always look shamefaced and speed off.

AND by the way this type of thing in the UK is called Curb crawling and is a criminal offence, I wish they would endorse it here. I was recently propositioned whilst pushing my baby in a pram!

What have we here? Who is this lady and why should anyone take notice of what she says?Does she even remotely resemble a role model of one who follows the Shariah herself? I'm not playing judge here just taking what is obvious. Who is this Mufthi she spoke to anyways? How come he didn't advice her " "young and something of a womanizer" colleague to fear Allah, lower his gaze and maybe get married legally or if not able to do so then to fast?Afterall that was the advice the Prophet,Peace be upon him, gave the youngsters who feared falling into sin and temptation. I agree with Brit...Allahu alam, she's obviously seeking attention and fame and sadly she got it. Why shouldn't she, using such sensational words like "Islam" "halaal sex slaves" and of course "Saudi Mufthi".. she's really onto a winner and may very well be laughing all the way to the bank..Audubillah,Allahu Must3aan!

I read it for obvious spicier reasons but, perhaps, could not get sense of it.

Does this mean free sex for all ?? ( i.e., IMO, one is free to sex as free for food, clothing, housing etc)

If that is the case then that’s quite revolutionary and it’s matter of 23rd century!!

Our inteligence Vs. Gods Law

When it comes to faith, we should accept what scriptures dictate. We will go astray if we use our inteligence. Because our creator knows what is better for us. Just like a manufacturer knowing better about his product.

I am not supporting what is said here. But i am just throwing thought to ponder upon.

I don't understand. I really don't. Does that mean a man can have 4 wives and concubines as well. My God, who ever can do that is a Bull! This Rashid al Haroun must have been a 'beast' in bed so to speak in terms of having a sexual appetite. Were these women really concubines? Being a Caliph I wonder if these women could have refused to have sex with him. This must have been rape in a different form unless these women were truly hot down there and could not find a better match to appease and extinguish their fire.

What shall we call this nonsense of opening offices to run sex trade: Islamic Prostitution/ Islamic Sex? We have Islamic Banking and Finance already and I suppose this is sufficient.Disgusting idea! This is bestial sex IMO. Whoever agrees with this Kuwaiti woman, quote me a verse from the Holy Qur'aan that supports her argument .

Don't mention Quran, Chapter 33: Verse 50 (Yusuf Ali)

O prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makkah) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her― this ONLY for thee, and NOT for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess in order that there should be no difficulty for Thee. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Note it mentions prisoners of war. This is when these Muslim men have gone to war and as a consequence of war they have made their opponents' wives widows or daughters orphans.

The article CLEARLY says: [The mufti told her it is not haram, or forbidden, she said. "The context must be that of a Muslim nation conquering a non-Muslim nation, so these jawari have to be prisoners of war."]

Has Kuwait gone in any war lately in Chechnya or conquering any nation? Have they forgotten someone by the name of Saddam Hussein already? What right does this woman have to say Kuwaitis should have sex slaves. She is just bringing mud onto Islam.

ITS TOTALLY HARAM !!

You cant justify ur stupid & wrong ideology with the name of ISLAM.... It seems like u never read HOLY QURAN ever in ur life.

Allah and Our beloved Prophet Mohd (PBUH) NEVER allowed this kind of things. SEX is only allowed with spouse and nobodyelse.

QURAN AND HADITH is the best source to guide us for ol of the problems and clarifications. READ IT WITH TRANSLATION and thats it.

"Your servants and your slaves are your brothers. Anyone who has slaves should give them from what he eats and wears. He should not charge them with work beyond their capabilities. If you must set them to hard work, in any case I advise you to help them."

Well there are many things wrong in this article and the firs thing is this woman is crazy and I dunno what the hell what she was going to do if Saddam took her as a slave when he occupied Kuwait?

First The Arabic word Jariah does not mean sex slave (in fact there is not word that gives this meaning) the word means girl and Jawary means girls mostly youth and young girls. Second as for the ruling of the Sharia it does not allow you to take the people of the country as slaves (unlike Judaism for example) on the contrary Islam encourages freeing the slaves in many ways it tells you if you commit such a sin then free a slave or if you want to be near to God then free a slave. Now the only way for someone to lose his freedom in Islam as I know is to be captured in the battlefield. Instead of killing the opposite warriors you can capture them and take them as slaves but that does not extend on the people who live in the place or the women and children of such men. And Harun Al Rashid did not die of 2000 concubine that is a myth in the old folk stories.

Needless to say that Islam rejected the practice of slavery in the societies of those days and established the means to gradually get rid of it by opening 18 ways of freedom for slaves and giving the slave the right to buy himself from his/her owner and it was only this one exception to preserve the lives of men in battle which otherwise will be lost.
