..Doctor pulls 13cm live worm from man's eye in India
AFP News – Fri, Jun 29, 2012....
....A doctor in India has pulled a live 13 centimetre-long worm from the eye of an elderly patient who was complaining of persistent pain in an operation reminiscent of a far-fetched alien movie plot.
When Dr V. Seetharaman examined 75-year-old patient P.K. Krishnamurthy at Mumbai's Fortis Hospital this week, the eye expert was shocked by the highly unusual sight of the writhing parasite and had to operate speedily to remove it before serious damage was caused.
... The specialist removed the 13-centimetre (five-inch) worm by making a small opening in the conjunctiva -- a 15-minute operation that was observed by the patient's horrified wife, Saraswati.
...He suggested the creature could have entered the patient from a cut in his foot or from eating raw or improperly cooked food, before entering the bloodstream and travelling to the eye..."
I suppose this could happen in China as well. *rolls eyes*
it's a shame the link doesn't provide a lab result on the worm identity. enter through a cut is suggestive of bilharzia, but bilharzia's lenght is 10 mm. for 13 cm, i'll think of ascaris, india and eye -> loa loa worm, toxocariasis or river blindeness worm.
my Differential diagnosis:
1- loa loa
2- toxocariasis
3- other
can be due to strong winds also
13cm.... goose bumps :(
This is not something to do with SHOWER...The man in the news loves gardening and because of that it must have happened...This incident was telecast on all INDIAN NEWS CHANNEL...
some people need to shower themselves
Good to know the guys all cured but yikes! what an ordeal it must have been.
"He suggested the creature could have entered the patient from a cut in his foot or from eating raw or improperly cooked food, before entering the bloodstream and travelling to the eye..." All those who love to eat their steaks and grills very rare and quiveringly underdone..you have been warned!
Scary! I'll keep an eye out for it.
