Lipstick warfare

Reuters, Istanbul -
Turkey’s national airline has barred female flight attendants from wearing red lipstick and nail polish, striking a nerve among secular Turks worried the country is becoming more Islamic.

Turkish Airlines, Europe’s fourth-biggest carrier, said the ban was aimed at keeping crews “artless and well-groomed with makeup in pastel tones,” as a natural look improved communication with passengers.

“As a consequence of our current cabin uniforms not including red, dark pink, et cetera, the use of lipstick and nail polish in these colors by our cabin crew impairs visual integrity,” the statement said.

Turkish Airlines declined a request for further comment.

ashur786: As long as Turkey is throbbing with Avenues like the Regina Revue strip tease club, you got nothing to be worried about.

brit: Turkey for so long was the sword and Spear of Islam pointing against the West.

It has come a long way to becoming the secular democratic nation it's today.

I agree..

Marilyn Monroe , Gina lolabrigida, Sophia Loren and my Cuban Shotputter all used to wear bright red lipstick .....

Classy :O)

Red is the most classic and classy lipstick and nailpolish shade.

It is the shade to wear if a woman wants to look polished and well groomed.

Perfect for air hostesses.

To ban this is stupid...but then again, it depends on the agenda..;)

Turkey under its current leader has gone from leaps and bounds. The economy is growing, the army has been subdued, people are happier and Turkey is now more confident as a nation playing a bigger regional role.

So sad seeing what Turkey is turning into after all the hard work of Mustafa Kemal.

Next thing you know they will start telling the flight attendants to wear a compulsory head scarfs.

more to do with the fact that red lippie tends to look less professional according to the opinion of many. Had it been cos "the country is becoming more Islamic" then would they not have banned all obvious shades of make up and not just red? Overreaction, paranoia and sentimentalization me thinks!

MN - you posted the pic of my lips :)

WTF - it has nothing to do with the color of nail polish and lipstick and uniform with religion and culture. And most of them are open muslim.

It's only red lipstick & polish, right?? Maybe they thought the color doesn't go well with the color of their uniforms....

y do we want to make an issue about anything related to some countries??

Brit: From what I have seen Turkish Airlines are the best Airline by far. From their amazing food to their super friendly staff and excellent flight crews, kicks British Airways A** any day!

But sorry(Brit/suli), what in the world has red lipstick and red nail varnish to do communicating with passengers?

By Sulieman• 4 May 2013 12:04
Sulieman

It was proven that the red color have the nerve effect on humans.

So it might be just because of this, why we always try to refer it to a specific a religion ?!!!

>>>"Turkish Airlines, Europe’s fourth-biggest carrier, said the ban was aimed at keeping crews “artless and well-groomed with makeup in pastel tones,” as a natural look improved communication with passengers."

because I think it is so Stupid to ban anyone because of anything in the name on any religion - As long As he/she doesn't effect the others"

haha .. I was betting that either you or Surprised would post this :O)

Anyway, from what i have read, Turkish airways has not fully banned lipstick or nail varnish. Only the bright colours.

It will be interesting to see how much political capital is made of this and who wins out in the end.
