Life of a single male in Doha?
Hi,
I am due to move to Doha in the next month and I am wondering what life is like there for a single male (just in a general sense, not in the hunt for women sense)
I am 29 and Irish and will be working for a Contractor as a Quantity Surveyor. I would like any feedback anyone might have on what Doha life is like. Is there much to do? Do you have much time to do it? Or will I be sitting at home alone every evening!
Is life difficult or is there a good work life balance?
Guess I would just like to know what you all do for fun and relaxation?
As far as the sea exist, "something to do"(s: in plural) always exist...
Remember, it is not about the place (Qatar, KSA, Chini, or wherever), it is about how YOU fit yourself in the place ;)
Cheers
We were all in your position once ;) (unless you were born and raised here)we all had to start from scratch!the heat; yeah its intense but you will become used to it in no time! as for socialising; you just find your way! i came here only knowing me mum and dad lol...thanks to work and also getting a part time job in a pub here :P i met LOADS of people! (you can take the girl outta london but cant take london outta the girl! lol!
Look at it this way, you know you can plan a day at the beach the night before and it wont piss down with rain like it may do back home :D
Good luck mate and welcome to Doha! you're gonna be just fine ;)
Tomorrow is another day ;)
You'll be doing all your socializing with your work mates, at first, until you get to know your way around. The social scene here is not intuitive for a Westerner. Dating is tough, as there aren't the typical Western-style dating venues, and the male/female ratio is like 100 to 1. As everyone already pointed out, coming in the Summer is not the best time of year. Fall, Winter, Spring are great, though. Good luck!
Max
it will be lovely to meet all of us somewhere.there are a lot of nice places, but the most important is the company.
so see you soon
Watch out for family day and buy some videogames.
there are few things to do for single men here don't worry .. as many members told u .. it all depends on severla variables .. like the crowd u r with?your interests?your level of income?
i'm another single guy here .. found it a bit boring at the begining .. but i'm very relaxed and used to it now .. haven't been here for long .. only 9-10 months only difference between you and me is that i was born and raised in Bahrain which doesn't really make the traditions or culture a big problem for me .. you might need to do some adjustments to the behavior in public .. other than this you'll be ok ..
there are several places to spend your eves around here don't worry about sitting at home watching t.v during the nights .. we all do this from time to time don't we?
trust me Butterly .. heat is going to be a problem .. 50 degrees + very high levels of humidity .. u r gonna suffocate here
hehehe
they thought it was butterfly, hmmm did you get your name from "Utterly Butterly"? anyway, im sure you'll do just fine.... :)
Everything, there is in Doha. Just watch out for the "Do's & Don'ts" in this Arab world. You will be in a safe hands.
thanks again guys, looking forward to arriving
And by the way....its Butterly not ButterFly!!
Common mistake and one I usually get a lot of stick over
Sure the heat will be no problem coming from Ireland!
that you are as good as dead for the next 3 months at least.
A male butterfly?? lol
Be active on QL... join Qatar living Social Group....and when the weather gets better you can explore Qatar...
Life is not so boring in Qatar....
In the summer he can sun bathe to his heart's delight.. get that "nearly" all over tan and be ready for the circuit come September..
When you set foot to any Gulf Countries the first thing to do is leave your life back home; just bear in mind that if you are fond of simple life, you will surely experience it. Routines will be household chores, then supermarket's day, then a soothing sand on the beach and not so wild club crowds. The good side of it all is you tend to have a quality time with yourself, which maybe for the longest time you dont have it on your busy country. Find time to read good books, indulge in a unique hobby or simply practice cooking..for they have inexpensive ingredients available. I, too will start my life in Doha, but no worries you will get thru it in time, as what they say "When you're in Rome, do what Roman's do" Nothing much to worry you will be fine, another phase in your life that you might appreciate in your later life. Best of Luck
Don't scare him off before he even gets here... he is not gonna have any issues going to the malls or anything... he's Irish and you know as well as I do who those rules are for....the labourers that hang around in groups of 20 !!! no offence to anyone but thats the truth....
It will be a bit difficult in the beginning but you will find your way of enjoying your time, and don't worry you will get to meet a lot of friends. You will survive in Doha, but don't expect it to be like your hometown.
Best of luck
"Better in time...down just like that"
Same here. However I do get to miss 2 weeks of Ramadan. :D
You can't teach experience...
LOL. It's a damn shame he's coming in the summer. Doesn't give him a fighting chance to enjoy the place for at least 3 or 4 months.
You can't teach experience...
Unfortunately for the next 3 months (till that wonderful holiday called EID) you will be bored senseless because it will be too hot to do anything and most of the country will have up and left. However Come mid-September things will be back in the swing of things and you'll wonder how you were ever bored.
sometimes life is not so good but u can make it better...
ONNA!
Ohh Sorry my BAD... i didn't focus on his nationality...:)
U may proceed to Qube, Irish Harp etc. etc. my friend...:)
afford to do here...I'm in savings mode right now so I'm not doing much...And it's almost hibernation time...
You can't teach experience...
lol Rizks.... brit has a point... :P
You Plonker.. he's Irish, NOT INdian, Pakistani, Nepali etc
So he'll have no problem in these places..
He will cancel his plans of coming to Qatar :P
Single males in Doha are not allowed to enter any MALLS during the weekend...:(
Single Males in Doha are not allowed to walk in any Souqs, Corniche or any Public Places....:(
Single Males in Doha are STRICTLY adviced to stay HOME during weekends and watch Tom and Jerry toons...:)
There's also the car enthusiasts.. Get yourself a KIA and join the fun :)
depends on your interest, im sure you'll meet friends with common interests in no time.. goodluck.. :)
There's a lot to do depending on your interests - there are several groups here at QL including photography and darts etc. Check out the groups section.
There are a lot of sporty types - rugby, football, kite surfing, there is scuba diving I believe but someone more familiar with that can help you out better than I.
I often see cyclists (but only on Friday mornings and they usually have a "pace" car running cover for them from the rear so they don't get run over) I believe there are also some serious (and not so serious) runners/triathlete types - from Hash House Harriers to the more competitive types.
Depends on your interests - good luck.
Signature line > "You can't fix stupid"
boredom during the summer
Power to the non believers, it’s a great feeling to have and hold.
Cheers guys, just the usual concerns of what to do when I get there! not worried about the job just the social life - priorities eh?
thanks for the reassurances
its not that lonely, and with all the laundry youll be doing during weekends...lol
welcoming committee anyone???:)
life is grand here. You are coming over here like the rest of us to make a bit of dosh. The only down side is the socialising. But if you find the right crowd then you will hardly have any time to spare.
Good luck and hope all goes well for ya when you move to Qatar.

HE WHO DARES WINS
a lot of things can be done here butterfly
first and foremost, choose ur friends, and be in a group, go have bbq and camping near the beach, stroll the malls, go to the clubs, etc, etc. or just drive around from wakra to al khor, and when u reach al khor, give me a call, a need a hitch.
All is fair in love and war....????
