Letter almost broke my heart last -June 2008

bratinella shen
By bratinella shen

I guess im getting old but young at heart,=) i just want to share this letter again...to remind how to value, love, and respect our parents. This letter really broke my heart Titled “Sulat ni Tatay at Nanay,” it is written in Filipino(Tagalog).Translated it into English. Here it is:

My Daughter/Son,
In my old age, please understand and be patient with me if, because of my poor eyesight, I break a plate or spill soup on the table. Please don’t scold me. Old people feel hurt easily. I pity myself every time you shout at me.

When I’m hard of hearing and don’t understand what you’re saying, don’t call me ‘Deaf!’ Just repeat what you are saying or write it down. I’m sorry, son (or daughter), I’m really old.

When my knees are weak, take the trouble to help me stand up, just like I did when you were just learning how to stand up and walk.

Be patient with me if I am repetitive like a broken record. Just listen to me and don’t laugh at me or get tired listening to me. Do you remember when you were young? When you wanted a balloon, you would ask for it again and again the whole day until you got what you wanted. I was patient with your demands.

Be also patient with my smell. Old people smell like the soil. Don’t force me to take a bath. My body is weak. I get sick easily when I get cold. Don’t recoil from me. Do you remember when you were young? I took pains to chase you under the bed when you didn’t want to take a bath.

Be patient with me if I am often irritable. That’s probably because of my old age. When you grow old yourself, you will understand me.

When you have time, let’s talk, if only for a short time. I feel lonely at home, nobody to talk to the whole day. I know you are busy with your work, but I want you to know that I long for your company, to talk to you, even if I know you are not interested in what I will tell you. Do you remember when you were a child? I patiently listened to understand your stories about your toys and imaginary friends.

And when the time comes that I am bedridden, don’t tire of taking care of me. Forgive me if I soil my bed and bedclothes. Please take care of me in the last moments of my life. After all, I won’t stay much longer.

On my deathbed, please hold my hand and give me strength to face death.

And don’t worry, when I am face to face with the Creator, I will whisper to him to bless you and help you. Because you loved your father and mother.

Love,
Mom and Dad

----1. )You think the authors are good parents?

Nobody is perfect - for me i think they are good parents. if u want me to explain that the answer is :

(----sorry but not all parents in the world are like yours, or mine-.)He wrote this letter for his child very emotional...well if u did not find this emotional(people are not same)

-----2.)Why even write to their children this message? I think its the children of the author that were raised badly.

Maybe he wrote this letter cuz he think his not getting young anymore...or maybe he is dying or sick...its for the child, to feel the love...never ending love by his parents.....if the children were raised badly theres a reason for everything that i cant tell but....people can change...not everytime u are bad...theres always a soft spot in our heart specially love for our parents .

Totally agree. Sorry If I am looking on a different perspective with regards to the letter. Let's love our parents, everyday, this is good and has to be done. Again this is in the point of view of the children. If I may add,in the point of view of being a parent myself, let's love our CHILDREN raise them well and treat them well. They are our legacy and our future :)

Hi there...maybe u are raised well by ur parents good for you! But we are not same...people are not same and its clearly we mention that it all depends on the person...and as far as i understood with this letter its a life lesson... i mean for some people who dont have respect with their parents maybe by this letter somehow this is the way to touched their heart....everybody will get old someday.....lets just LOVE OUR PARENTS......never waste a time or a day to say I LOVE U....even in our busy schedule lets find time to call them......

By jasonbquizon• 22 Jun 2011 12:10
jasonbquizon

tell me if the children being addressed here were raised badly "I pity myself every time you shout at me." Maybe, just maybe, the parents were also shouting at their kids before. You are touched by letter, of course you are, parents pleading to their children to treat them well is really touching, but then again why plead in the first place? Do you guys even understood what you read?

By anonymous• 22 Jun 2011 12:09
anonymous

This is so emotional and touching. I think everyone should read and understand this. We at time unknowigly hurt our parents. Which is very wrong. They have done so much for us and when they grow old they are like small children but only more emotional. I pray that i never hurt my parents feelings and keep them always happy. GOD BLESS.

you talking to me? of course not, my parents haven't yet send me a similar letter, and I don't expect them to. You think the authors are good parents? Why even write to their children this message? I think its the children of the author that were raised badly.

By jasonbquizon• 22 Jun 2011 12:01
jasonbquizon

YOUR PARENTS yes, but what about the authors? Do you think your parents will write the same letter to you? if your parents treated you well and loved you so much, should they even have to write to you about all this things, even their smell for goodness sake? You live in a bubble, sorry but not all parents in the world are like yours, or mine.

I think you were raised badly by your parents! Am I right or NOT wrong?

By jasonbquizon• 22 Jun 2011 11:57

what you reap is what you saw. A child treated well in his childhood would most likely to treat his parents well in the future. A child treated badly would most likely treat their parents badly. I still believe that parents have the most influence to children than the outside world. there are a lot of parents who don't know how to be one. I'm not being pessimistic but its true. You said "I know families who have the same situation and i know d problem is not with the parents" did you stayed with the family 24/7 to conclude this? You think if something wrong is happening the parents or the family would let you know? Treat your children well, so they will treat you well. same goes with treating other people.

yes, respect is an important factor in life, even to younger ones we have to respect them too.. Whatver the cases are there should always be respect, though others may not give us that and not treat us well, the entire desicion is up to us. Whether we'll be righteous nd accept things as they are or waste our time on anger just bec.others don't treat us well. If others treat us the way they want it doesn't necessarily mean that we have to do the same.

By bratinella shen• 22 Jun 2011 11:23
bratinella shen

you know our parents whatever we do they are the only one who will gonna understand us, who can give us unconditional love......i dont know as of me i disagree with -----

"The parents should also ask themselves as to why the children don't treat them well."-jasonbquizon

Our parents, all they want for us is the best-- best life ever and they are the one who guide us...for what we are now... i mean how successful we are, if we failed or we go astray pls dont blame our parents....

By sarahmae25• 22 Jun 2011 11:11
sarahmae25

BUT WE NEED TO RESPECT THE ELDERS AND TREAT THEM WELL! SPECIALLY OUR PARENTS THATS IS THE GREATEST COMMANDMENTS TO US FROM OUR CREATOR...

By anonymous• 22 Jun 2011 11:05
anonymous

Exactly, There r many factors that contributes to every person's mind set and attitude, unless they stayed home all their lives 24/7 with only their parents and w/o any access to the outside world then we could say "parents should ask theirselves why their children treat them that way". PEople do close their minds and limit the probabilities most of the time.

Nice one though i've read it many times. How people treat their parents is not the parents' fault all the time,It's not all about the upbringing alone but the influences of other people outside their homes as well.

I know families who have the same situation and i know d problem is not with the parents. I grew up w/o parents but im not rude to them,it's entirely depends on the person.

This fictional letter has been circulated over and over again in FB and Youtube. can't believe I'd stumble on this here :( Not being negative, but if the parents treated and cared for their children in the first place, there is no need for this letter. The parents should also ask themselves as to why the children don't treat them well.
