job cuts take place in Qatar

jimba
By jimba

hello guys....seems major companies here in qatar are retrenching the employees...Qatar steel, QP,Doha bank are the major companies who have terminated the employees in large scale. Now another public sector company Barwa also in the same line - they cut down the employees at certain volume. But none of these companies have declared their strategy. My friend who work in Barwa Al khor has lost his job and going back to his home countries. the sad fact is that none of these companies provide specific reasons for these action. It might be due to the financial crisis - but the news papers and media are celebrating that Qatar is free from any impact of economic crisis. We have to wait and watch what happens.....who knows who wil be here by that time.....If you have any suggestions on this please feel free to post your opinion.

sana999, don't worry, even if they have job cuts, it shouldn't be your concern.

But it was expected because all the new projects will be on hold so many companies will be affected and the chain reaction will go all the way.

Good luck to everyone.

Please be sure of the information you are posting. I am working in one of the companies you mentioned in the post, and no termination took place for those reasons. This might lead to a panic or wrong decisions by some people.

Posting in the forum is not for the sake of posting, you also should verify the information and think of the consequences of the kind of data and any decision based on these information.

On the other hand, all companies all over the world do manpower cut in high scale, Thank God we are here in Qatar safe in life and stable income.

May Allah bless you all and keep the prosperity of being here.

Actually Qatar is still hiring. Ive just started a new 12 month contract. I think companies are just using this as an chance to get rid of dead wood

Real estate companies are most affected ones too, not only Barwa. Due to financial situations of most financing companies, most projects were on hold and so they need to pull out some of their staff.

when someone gives you a job, it is like lifting you out from a trench, saving you! But when the same company wants you to leave it is like putting you back in the trench- 'retrenching'!!

heard even occidental asked a few high profile guys to leave recently.

What's "retrenching" ?

Hi guys. Do you know that Doha Bank is the worse in job cutting because they just have treated staff like if they have never worked before for them. They just have given the termination when staff comes to work without any prior notification and even the new staff who was recurited were terminated by giving false / unacceptable reasons. This is something we cannot expect from a responsbile bank in Qatar. HOw can we rely on banks like this if they cannot treat their own staff well.

Qatar is certainly not recession proof, whatever they say.

I think there will hardly a place in the world that escapes the recession.

Qatar and places like it may well end up suffering more than most because the oil price has collapsed and ultimatly everything you see happening in Qatar is only possible because of oil and gas.

just eat another pie

I wouldn't leave without letting you know, after all you were one of the very first nice people I met here (and I mean HERE QL!)They should invent a name for you as a Doha Expat Link, you are really the best! Sorry I don't even bother to answer the QL mums thingy, all best things are when I am working :-(

The rest of the time I am practically prisoner of my own lazyness and driving phobia over this side of town, but hope we meet again one of these days :-)

Some major projects are on hold but so far no termination and retrenchment happened not even in the near future. I worked in QP and it's business as usual, nobody's worried about retrenchment as Qatar and QP has strong economic backbones. Your source is wrong as far as QP is concern.

By Mira• 17 Feb 2009 22:08

Well here is an article in the gulf-times yesterday saying QP is not going to be retrenching it's employees:
