How to meet Qataris?

I have been in Qatar for 2 months now and in my job, I deal with other expats mostly.  When I go shopping, I see Filipinos and Indians, Nepalese, etc.

It is strange to be in a foreign country and yet have so little contact with the natives of that country.

I would like to know more about Qatar and Qatari people and the culture and not just learn from what I hear other expats say about Qatar, the people, etc.

Anyone have luck in getting to know the Qatari people?

i am an arab from malaysia working happily here. dont ever spread bad rumours about qatari. bad and good people are everywhere and not only here in qatar. qatar people is as nice when you being nice to them. i not an apple polisher but i guess there are no need to prolong this kind of discussion. just respect them as you are living happily on qatar land, full stop...

Very close knit and private people. Very warm and hospitable once they get to know you. It's a relationship based culture and they take a little bit of time to trust you due to the reality that some people view them as cash c. They rightly should protect themselves from those whose intentions are not true. In the past, they had been taken advantage of, unfairly so.

And Cabbage, you are very right to warn of this, "A word of warning though - there are some that say they are Qatari and they are not and mostly they are ones that ruin it for the true people of Qatar."

- this is where the negative perception is perpetrated by some people to their benefit, whatever that may be. Wish other people knew the truth.

Stop spreading rumors about Qatari people !!

i'm a Qatari and I really respect our driver and our house keeper !!

If the foreign people respect us and respect our country e gonna respect them more then they respect us !

but if there are people like you just spreading rumors and he hates us, however he is living with us ( i don't know why he still ) but we don't respect him at all.

qwertyatoz, because they want to be Qatari.Plus, some of them like to scare expats with "I am Qatari, don't upset me, or I will  get you deported". Quite common, actually.

I disagree.Other people from their own country can treat people 'below them' with total disrespect.

I agree with you - talk to them- invite them for coffee - treat them as 'normal' people. They are not aliens for goodness sake.Shaine - I agree with you - it did not take me long to recognise a true Qatari from  a wannabe.

It really depends who you are and whether they like the initial look. If you are undertaking menial tasks the you are unlikely to receive a warm welcome.

All my student are Qatari and I have to admit they are really nice people. Very polite and hospitable. I can tell by some of the parents I've met in passing and talking to my students they are educated and friendly. Specially my female students are wonderful to teach. Some of the boys can be a bit a handfull but then again which teenage boy isn't.

Despite what may be said by other people on here - the Qatari people on the whole are very nice, polite and civilised people.   If you show them respect - they will respect you just as much.   This is not 'brown nosing' this is the truth.   Yes of course there are some that are 'not nice' but the same can be said of any nationality.   The Qatari people I encounter at work,  through my husband’s job and the people we have made friends with; are very nice, well educated, polite people who go out of their way to welcome you to their country.   They also accept they have a 'long way to go' in some ways. However - they admit they will get there in their own time and at their own pace.   Most Qatari's I know - have been educated abroad and although they are 'Westernised' still respect and want their own culture.   They like what they have and are.   The Qatari's that have been in my home - ate the food I provided, talked to my boys in a very nice way, talked honestly and openly about Qatar and were quite frankly a joy to have in my home.   They are the first to admit - they can and are criticised and will agree with some of that; and will also be the first to admit they are grateful for the workers that are here to help them grow.   I may have been very lucky with the Qatari's I have met but I happen to think there is more good than bad out there. A word of warning though - there are some that say they are Qatari and they are not and mostly they are ones that ruin it for the true people of Qatar.
