Good restaurants
Hi all,
My husband and I are moving to Qatar in August and we love to eat out. We also like to have dinner parties, but that's a whole other thread!
What do people think are the best restaurants? We do like good food, and like to spoil ourselves occasionally with a splash out, but get angry if we have to pay a fortune for something that's not worth it. I know that Dubai has some swanky restaurants - Gordon Ramsey's for instance. What about Qatar? We'll be in Al Khor - will we have to go to Doha for a good meal? Are the good restaurants mostly in the international hotels, or are there others. WE're happy to try all sorts of diffent food, not just international (which can get boring). What's the best website for reviews of restaurants, etc?
Many thanks in anticipation ...
But in town there are no flies or Mosquito's it is very insect free here, I have seen some mossies in the house recently but in the summer its so hot I don't think they can be bothered to fly around. Also not seen a spider or lizard or snake or pretty much any creepy crawlies at all.
And yes in the summer even at 6am it will still be about 30c. Its unreal.
at the moment its pretty nice here, but I think by the time you get here it will be hot hot hot.
Yes, I know, Aviduser - killer for him and us! Luckily, as he's a lab, he's quite happy just lying under the air conditioning! As long as he gets pats and food, he's a happy boy! My main concern is that I think we're going to be in an apartment rather then a house so we'll have to walk him for him to do his business - have to be an early morning thing but if it's anything like Bourke heat it's still hot at 6am.
Which reminds me - do you get flies in Qatar? Might sound like a crazy thing to ask, but they drive me mad here!! No flies would be a HUGE bonus! lol
Walking that dog on the beach in the summer is gonna be a killer !!!!!!
Likewise..we like to eat at Thai (along Nasser)..the food is good favors my taste too and at very reasonable price (for a seafood resto). We also tried Korean Restaurant(seafoods)opposite Chili's and they're fantastic. I don't know, but I'm always fond of seafoods:) (from where in my country, oysters, shellfish & prawns are very cheap & fresh).
You won't find much in the way of restaurants in Al Khor I'm afraid. There is one Italian restaurant that is quite good though.
As far as traveling into Doha, it really isn't that bad. Good highway all the way in and takes about 40 minutes. We make the drive quite a lot actually.
I'm sure the dog won't be the only giveaway!!
I understand that people have different attitudes to dogs - even in the country here in Australia they don't understand why we have the dog in the house! My husband's an Aussie city boy and I'm from London, so dogs to us are part of the family - and you wouldn't stick your kids outside!! Well, actually, I might ... just as well I never had any!!
Al Khor beach is big but not beautiful, but you can walk the dog.
Incidentally Muslims consider them (dogs) dirty so try and keep them near you if you see any locals or you might get some mild abuse or dirty looks or see them fleeing in the opposite direction.
Having a dog sure fire way of saying I aint from around here !!
Cheers
I must get on with some work .. taking a sneaky sickie today as I have stuff to do at home .. and have now spent hours lounging around in QL .. lol
[but i'm sure i'll be back before the day is out ...]
the school in in Al Khor .. I know it's miles from Doha, but very close to a HUGE beach, I understand -- great for us and for our dog too as he loves to swim. Are dogs allowed on the beach, by the way? There seem to be a few doggie people on this forum so I might check them out ..
How come you ended up there, is the school there ? still its a good road to there but still that is a pain.
Perhaps a whole forum topic on restaurant reviews? I can store them all up and try each of the good ones once we get there .. er, when will I work?? lol
Know anything about restaurants in Al Khor?
Its too late for me to list them all, I think my idea for web site with restaurant reviews definitely needs to be done.
5* hotels all pretty decent, and you can drink and there are a smattering of decent places dotted all over town.
Will get a list eventually
My personal favourite is the Thai place in Nassr Street, Cheap and genuinely good. I love it.
