Demystifying the Lulu near you...

Wanderer
By Wanderer

I visited the new Lulu Supermarket which opened near Al Gharafa last week. I tried to be there on the opening day (just like half the population in Doha on that day, the other half being away on vacation), but couldn’t get anywhere near a 3-mile radius. So I decided for the excitement to settle down and visited again today. These are a few of my observations (along with a few pictures) for people who have not visited the facility yet.

Lulu

Lulu-1

Lulu-2

The entrance and exit were clearly demarcated (via signboards) and that was cool. However, I felt that unlike the Lulu near Peninsula newspaper, the entrance and exit was rather small. Pardon me for being pessimistic, but I wouldn’t want to be there if an accident happened inside the place on a Friday… there would be pandemonium.

I then noticed that the corridor was also comparatively smaller than the Lulu near Peninsula. The space between the check-out counter and proposed hotels should have been wider. The current space is not enough to handle the flow of people on a heavy day. I couldn’t get a good picture of it, but try and see it in this picture…

Lulu-10

Someone had told me that this is by far the biggest Lulu in the Middle East. In that case, I was frankly under-whelmed. While it didn’t FEEL bigger overall, each section was larger and had more selections. The toy section, the Plasma TV and electronic section etc… However, the CD collections disappointed me big time. It does not hold a candle to the collection at the one near Peninsula. I’m just hoping that they will increase the number of CDs in the coming days.

Lulu-3

Lulu-4

Lulu-7

Lulu-9

Lulu-6

I really liked this part… It provides a good break for senior citizen like me. There is ample space to move around a few chairs. It was thoughtful of them to add this to the overall structure. The lift is also very near to these chairs and I appreciate them for their concern.

Lulu-5

I also appreciate their concern for nature. They are using re-usable bags. I liked that about them also.

Lulu-8

All in all, I think it’s a good place to be and to do your shopping, except on crunch days like Fridays and Saturdays. The parking space may not be spectacular, but it’s adequate. It’s near my home and I’m expecting to have a lot more of my shopping sprees there…

LULU, here we go!!!

Coming from a teacher, that's high praise indeed. Thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate it very much.

Novita, sorry I didn't say thank you to you earlier. I missed it the first time and then got lost in the other 'enlightening comments' on this thread. Sigh, hijackers, they're everywhere... thanks for the comment, lady. Coming from as good a photographer as you, that's nice to hear indeed.

I too visited the new lulu and liked the place very much. This lulu seems to have the best range of import from UK and US, ambience great, and everything is classy. but my comment is not about lulu but the quality of ur posts, you have such a wonderful sense of detail. After reading ur lulu post I was so impressed that I tracked ur other post and read them. Your style and camera skills r so professional. You made even an ordinary event like a store opening so readable. Hope to see posts like this in ql often, all the best for lulu team too, they are the best in Qatar

In this lulu they have introduced a trolley with toy car attached to it. You can make your child sit in that car while you shop. But the number of trolleys are very minimum. Its difficult to get one.

The one on the D ring road always looks miserable everytime i went there.

Ponnuse Mon is Mallu ...100% ...lol

& he has been to Lulu ...to buy indian vegetables ...lol

Although there is empty ground around it still I feel the new Lulu is cramped......but still guys like me dont have to go all the way to hyper.

There is also a new shoping Mall near TV Round About - Qatar Shopping Centre (500mtrs behind Twinkys). It also has a good bakery Section from Bakemart. At QSC the prices are higher by around QR1. But still its an option.

but I thought the shops in Qatar didnt encourage photographing inside them......I guess Wanderer got away as all the staff there is new in qatar and getting used to the place. I guess LULU have even arrested a QLer who was taking down prices the incident was posted here at length.

Good Shots though

Azydburn, I'd like to say that I am NOT getting any commision for promoting a place (and that's only because the fishermen said they would give me a commision, but they then left on the boat and mocked at me from the sea). on a serious note, I'd my trusty cam with me, and my head wasn't cuckoo-enough to not have noticed any of these details. The rest just involved a little patience, in stringing it all together. I don't need someone to pay me to do something I enjoy doing anyway. I'm sad you thought that I might have been on Lulu's payrolls. That was unworthy of you.

Salman, that is not just the games section. It's their ENTIRE CD section, including music, movies, games for ps3, VBox etc... not much, eh? But i think they're planning for a phased expansion

kikaychuchai, It's on the Al Gharafa road, bang opposite Landmark Shopping mall (the Marks and Spencers side of the building, to be more exact)

RMX and Novita, thank you. And Novita, you are not such a bad photographer yourself. Your piece on the phiharmonic orchestra actually made me go there. I rather enjoyed it. :)

Legal pad, when you go there, you can see it for yourself no? That's the whole point of this post, to inspire people to visit the place and draw conclusions for themselves. Having everything spoonfed to you ain't fun, young man (I have a feeling that your mutant tendencies made you age faster, to the current 66 years as it shows in your profile).

chichi, thanks sweetheart. You made me smile.

Qatarexpat, I agree. Like the opening day, when I couldn't get anywhere near to it in a 3-mile radius... It's a traffic block waiting to happen

And a MASSIVE shopping mall opposite (under construction) and have such WOEFUL PARKING AND ROADS.

It's beyond stupid, the car park is tiny and on friday nights I guarantee you will see cars queuing on the main triple lane road to get in.

There will be a nasty accident.

Access roads are woefully inadequate.

With this development Qatar has once again proved, if proof were needed that they have NO IDEA what they are doing.

UTTERLY UTTERLY ridiculous.
