15-yr-old boy gets first permanent artificial heart implant, which is expected to allow him to lead another 20 to 25 years of "normal life". Doctors have decided to give him the artificial heart as the child was suffering from the muscle-wasting illness Duchenne's syndrome, while he was very close to his death.
Dr Antonio Amodeo, who carried out the 10-hour-long operation, said the heart is 2.5 in long and was placed inside the left ventricle and its connection with the ascending aorta.

"This surgery opens up new horizons as there are many children who need transplants but the number of donors is very small and there are some who, like this patient, cannot be transplant candidates because of illness," he added.

good thing for some additional temporary relief given from the surgery, but DMD itself is a progressive degeneration of muscles soon patients with this has a life expectancy of early 20's & its over. until now there are no proven cure for this and usually the medical goal is delay or adaptability of progressing disability.

the operations done for sure is a very expensive one...

Hope the boy should lead a normal life at later stage..Though i know few people who after going for artificial heart implantation find it bit difficult to carry on their regular chores and earlier habits..

May GOD blessed this boy for brightful future ahead..:))

Flor..Sadly, its the poor ones in developing countries who are in desperate need of these technologies. Many countries(including mine) have government taking care of mechanical heart valve replacements for the needy children. This can also be included in that scheme and made affordable I believe.

It can become affordable, if the governments channel resources to healthcare.

I agree that in developing nations, it will be available only to a few. - for now.

let's accept the reality that this kind of technology will never be affordable!
