50MBPS internet in Qatar soon

Qatar is looking at constructing a broadband backbone for the country with minimum access speeds of 50megabit per second (Mbps), ictQATAR secretary general Dr Hessa al-Jaber said.
Currently, 63% of Qatar’s households are connected to broadband networks with minimum access speeds of 1Mbps, Hessa said at the opening session of the 17th International Conference on Telecommunications yesterday.

In order to lay the foundation for a knowledge-based economy, ictQATAR is building an advanced ICT infrastructure with high speed and capacity.
“In Qatar, we are committed to building a ubiquitous high-speed broadband, not only to prepare us for competition in today’s global economy but as a means for ensuring the efficient delivery of healthcare, education, and government services for all. The availability of affordable, fast and reliable connectivity is also an important lever and enabler to stimulate investments in new businesses,” she said.
Although ictQATAR is committed to building the next-generation broadband, which will be accessible to all people at affordable costs, it recognises that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution might not be practical.

I tried to go onto language tools from the google web site to translate a spanish email I had recieved and got the oops page, come on!!! We are all adults.

It should be an option to have censorship.

If you want to be censored because you have children, or you dont want to be accidently sent to an unsuitable site, then the ISP (QTEL) should be able provide the censorship rules to your account at your request.

I`m sure I have seen this method used in Europe & USA.

I have had the oops page when I have been looking for a VPN to watch internet TV from my country, which is blocked because my IP address is not in that country.

Not sure which countries have 200Mbps, but back in the U.S. Verizon FIOS internet is considered the fastest out there. FIOS is a new service that is being offered, that only started couple of years ago, and only very recently they started having the 50Mbps connection. By very recently I mean while I was there in 2009 they only had the 25 one.

As for streaming not sure why you cant since internet here is up to 8Mbps and that is more than enough. Even in the U.S., unless you have something similar to verizon's FIOS you wont have much higher speeds than the ones offered here.

Shows the plans :)

50MBPs download but only 128kb upload is not enough to have a good streaming of tv show.

It's really very good news,... and as said,. they do not have to as they are the only ISP. unless they want to increase prices, which I don't think they'll do.

BUT,..why most of your comments are very pessimistic and negative,..!! go out and have some fresh air,.. :)

and what do you mean by cool sites, which are banned,.. :O

most website are blocked.

most bandwidth's application was shapped.

never imagine full speed when streaming, youtube, video conference with your child. because the bandwidth will be shape by operator.

So 50 Mbps only for opening qatarliving or static website ( that enough with 10kbps only ) hahahahahahaha

1st of April was last week :)

This will come, but will take a lot of time..

How about the connection speed to/from Qatar? Would guess very little traffic is domestic.
