You can't trust a Qatari company

shortstop61
By shortstop61

I am posting this as a warning to anyone considering coming to Qatar. If you are coming as an expat from an ethical company, you should have no problem.

If you are considering a position being recruited by a Qatari company, don't waste your time.

I was warned well in advance of ever coming to Doha that the Qatari companies cannot be trusted and that the locals are mean spirited and not to be trusted. I ignored that advice.

Will a Qatari company take forever to finalize your contract yes.

Will the contract that they ask you to sign in any way reflect what they offer you? No.

I am sure I have offended someone but to be quite honest I have never dealt with such disingenuous people in my entire life.

Shaking the sand from my boots and going back to civilization now.

THE WORST

THE IRANI (QATARI) COMPANY

The problem of difference in offer letter and original contract is common in Qatar. But that does not necessarily mean that company will not offer what they promised, sometimes due to problem of availibility of particular catagory visa, companies asked to sign in other catagories.

Some of you may know what company I work for, well they have decided to cut back on benefits pretty much from day one and right now there is a lot of unrest.

Examples:

2 Free flights a year now 1

Schooling. Was free for all kids unlimited amount. Now well its up in the air but it seems its gonna be restricted to a set amount.

Imagine if you have three kids you could be in severe financial difficulty.

Pay, everyone hired now is on significantly less than people hired 2 to 3 years ago in some cases half.

Payrise: Don't make me laugh.

Everyone gets blinded by TAX free in the Gulf, they don't see the hidden costs of coming here.

I think its safe to say sad though it may be that if you move to the Gulf expect to get screwed, treated badly, lied to, exploited, cheated, be undervalued, un-trained god the list goes on.

This is not just Qatari companies, I think it applies to all GULF companies. There are numerous blogs outlining the problems with companies in Dubai too.

You arrive here sell your soul then bend over and expect to be Fcuked.

Anyone thinking of coming here don't believe the hype, the lies or the promises.

Incidentally though I am very happy. Weird hey.

The difference in package & benefits from first contact to final negotiations was very different in my case, it was ascribed to a change in policy.

I have yet to start working at my company, but I must be honest and admit that I am worried-the goal posts seem to shift easily, without question.

Sad to say I have the same scenario as your friend. I am currently working in a private company as an Accountant but the contract I signed as Graphic Designer which is in conformity with my visa.

Aviduser, our accommodation cut back after four months stay in the company, huhuhuhu... our company is losing enormously 6 digits from last year to date.

Any idea how soon a company in doha closes after not being liquid (lack of cash funds)?

Thanks

I would give anything to be a fly on the wall when Qatar comes crashing down as the last bit of gas is squeezed from the sand and they are left with nothing but their reputation.

I will agree not all Qataris are bad...just 99.99999999999% of them. I was never a racist until I got to know them....

Obviously not all Qataris are bad just the majority ha ha.

Anyway no one has reacted in the positive to my question above the silence is deafening.

The slower the process, add in the fact that every HR department is staffed with Coffee Drinking date eating lazy Mother Fcukers and you are left endlessly waiting for anything to happen.

Even big companies with World Wide brand names fall victim to this. Believe me if any of you are better off after 2 years of being with your company, ie. they have not cut back on benefits then count yourself lucky.

This country is suffering from a human resources crisis mark my words it will be the downfall of the GCC

I am just wondering how you could arrived to Qatar within 7 days with RP? To get RP you need to pass a medical test, then to make a fingerpring. How can anyone to arrive to qatar with issued RP?

Just a question, don't take it personally.

A good Qatari company but rare;

"Will a Qatari company take forever to finalize your contract yes."

No. in my case. sign the contract within 45 minutes of the interview.

Arrived Qatar within 7 days after signing the contract with RP.

Will the contract that they ask you to sign in any way reflect what they offer you? No.

No change of the contract conditions. In fact Salary increment of 25 % after 3 months. Arrange family vish within 5 days of the request.

I am sure I have offended someone but to be quite honest I have never dealt with such disingenuous people in my entire life.

Given release within 2 weeks after request to join another co. after 18 months of service.

This is a Qatari Co. and I want all of you to know there are some good local companies are still around.

This is a tribute to my Boss.

Well, shortstop61, have you received a copy of your employment contract yet? Remember, there could be two versions of it: The first according to your negotiations, and the second, to comply with Qatari employment statutes. Perhaps that's why they are taking a longer time than "normal" to come up with the contract. So, please be patient.....

Welcome to Qatar, Fasten your seat belts as the ride ahead is bumpy, In case you want to throw up there is a bag infront of you. If the Oxygen level or the pressure in the cabin falls, You are on your own, as only the "Captain and the co-pilot" have been provided with the breathing masks. We need the plane to be safe, not you.

Just think about the captain and the co-pilot and the plane and everything will become familiar.

I joint this company few months ago. As for now, I am very happy with them.

Before that I used to work with two companies, the owner of one of them was Syrian, and another – Canadian. BOTH were disaster! Especially the Canadian one. Every culture has its good and bad sides, as well as any person does. It’s just amazing, how some people manage to lose all best features of the one culture and pick up the worst ones of another.

i don't think it is always purposeful that the goal posts change I think it is incompetance.

My original contract bears little to what I do or what i receive which is because as DaRuDe says due to middle management.

Dont blame the company itself its the middle man always creating mess. he will get some thing from the owner and will deliver something to the workers just to grab his commission.

i know such many companies even in the ruling family such crap is happening and i was surprised to know that.

yeah but it's a common thing here now ..

I know a person who is a programmer and when he came here his boss want him to sign a contract of a/c technician .. is that believable????

This is the case specially in Private companies ...

Very sweeping statement but I think it's not true for all. You just have to do your research before signing anything.

In that research, QL helped me a lot before I finally ended up here in Qatar.

That pretty much every company here promises the World to get you here then either doesn't deliver or move the Goal Posts.

Or get you here then start taking away the perks you were offered before you arrived.

I think this is not just Qatar, I think the entire GCC, certainly Dubai has the same issues. I have read many a blog about promises being broken, packages shrinking.

Welcome to Business in the Gulf.

This is one thing I keep banging on about, These countries are gonna find no one willing to work for them if the trend continues and there is no way any of the countries can survive without the Expats.

A quick example, I was chatting the other day to an Indian guy he said QP had gone to India to pick up some cheap well qualified engineers.

They returned empty handed, Qatar's poor reputation had preceded their arrival and the Indian guys quite rightly said we are sticking in our own country as we will be treated fairly and like human beings.

The clock is ticking in this region, will word get out before people are blinded by the TAX free salary.

We shall see

Oh and any one reading this considering a job here, has your employer told you you need PERMISSION FROM THEM to leave the country at any TIME.

Qatar really is the Worlds largest open prison but they never tell you that in the interview !!
