Hello everyone.

I am wondering if anyone can help me in figuring out if the offer I received is a good one or not.
I have a PhD and been offered a postdoc position in an american univeristy in Doha.
The offer includes:
40.000 USD per anum
Housing allowance
car allowance
and one ticket per year

is this considered a good offer?
Thanks for any input

well I am not sure about how to counter their offer, but I do know of jobs in your field that only require a BS and pay the same that is how I am basing that your offer is low. Do you mind PM'ing me the Uni that gave you this offer? I might be able to help you more!

you too think that?mm

but do you think one can just blow asking to double the offer in the face of the employer just like that?

thanks for the comment anyway

that would be fair if you were just had a BS, and a little low for MS. For a PhD it is very low.

And make sure to get the exact details on housing and transportation as you could end up in a hared accommodation with a transportation allowance nowhere near high enough.

Hi guys,

Howdy ,My field of research is medicine and biological sciences, but what do you intend by Qatar has a lot to offer to researchers?

Mandi, in fact I thought that the offer is somewhat not very reasonable one. The position is a postdoc. But can you tell me roughly what would your highly placed source consider as a fair offer? I am very interested to know. Sorry didn't get the comparison you did. what's the difference between Education city with whatever universites it contains and the comparably top american univesity?

Many thanks for your input

Canadaarindam, thanks for your wishes, same to you. And surely it would be nice to meet you in the Ed city if I ever get there!!

thanks to all

Economic Crisis + International experience = take it.

(unless complicated reasons like family, etc.. etc... come against it...)

Anna, to put it more precisely, Ed City offers a competitive package in your field (comparable to a top American university) plus 25% foreign service bonus, plus housing, transportation, medical, school for kids and tickets home.

I would like to know what is your research field, and there are plenty of American universities in Education City , which one are you preferring. As far as my experience is concerned, you show not worry about income package because Qatar has more to offer if you are interested in research.

I just spoke with a "highly placed source" in Education City who was quite surprised by the offer. He considers it very low and also was somewhat taken aback that you would be offered a position without a face-to-face interview. Relocation expenses are considered part of a package at Ed City as well. What is exactly the job title you are looking at?

MD, maybe you can tell her what figure would be suitable (rough amount) so that she and others can make more informed decisions.

Thanks anna33. I am still considering and kind of on the edge of taking the offer. Best of luck to you. Hopefully, if both of us eventually take the offer, we can actually meet in the education city..

nway...yes...I am also curious to know about the free transportation. In case I wanted to buy a decent car, how much can be the monthly payment? Any idea, anyone?

Thanks

Haha. That is true, but I am working in Canada now, and even if you get a 100k offer here, after 15% tax and employment insurance, and housing and car the amount of money left is sometimes less that that, especially if you are paying a mortgage. My reasoning was to find out is this much is enough to live in qatar with a reasonable standard.

3.65 * 40.000 are 146.000 Qatari Riyals. For a holder of a PHD this is just half of what he should get. I don't know why people sell themselves so cheap(ly).

A PHD takes about seven years ( Master 5 years and then 2 more). 7 years when you did not make money. Anybody who hires you must make up for those seven years. This is at least my opinion. You can come here and live with the amount you get, but it would not be adequate in terms of your qualification!

Would you please explain MagicDragon? I needed your input for any decision. I really appreciate your feedback.

Olive, yes that salary seems reasonable. But I am still wondering if that is worth to relocate from north america? Is that amount of money (let me tell you about my offer: USD 375/month travel allowance and USD 40,000/year for housing or free education city housing) is a good amount to live decently?

You would be a complete idiot not to take it. If you're working for an Education City college that mean free accom and transport so that's 40,000 * 3.65 tax free $ every month. Don't be an idiot. That's far more than you'll ever make anywhere else.

Hello curiousbutdetermined,

Well I have some experience. But science does not pay that much anyway where ever you go in the academia.

So I was not sure, if I have to leave working in Europe, and come to Qatar but still be paid as I would be back home!!Is it true that even an American university in Doha would still pay as it would back in the U.S? Obviously apart from the housing and car allowances. Plus, I thought they would provide relocation expenses, but they did not mention it to me..

thanks anyway for the input

By anna33• 14 Oct 2009 19:42

Well as far as I understood, that accomodation is sorted, did not ask where or how much do they pay for it. And I didn't ask about the car loan either, as the interview was on the phone, so all went quickly.

They are expecting me to confirm my availability for the offer, but I will double check again with them to understand these details.

i would say take it until you find a better one..unless you have better offers right now!

and if you have no prior experience you should take it anyway!

Good luck
