What should I negotiate for?
Hello Everyone,
I visited Doha for an interview last week and I loved it. I am about to begin job offer negotiations with my potential employer. It is a foundation (charity or NGO type of work) but a big and minted one.
Coming from the UK where salaries and packages are mostly advertised, this job was advertised as - negotiable.
The position is middle management - reports directly to head of department. The job is a technical support and capacity building role (sorry if our charity sector jargon is not making a lot of sense).
But what I what to know is what sort of basic salary and benefits should i negotiate for?
Thank you all in advance for your help!
OK. that looks at things in a completely different way.... very practical though
Keep in mind there are no social nets here like you have in the UK. No free healthcare, education for your kids or pension and if you are ill or long term sick, that is pretty much the end of your career here! Also, employment contracts here are worth less than the toilet paper in your NGOs loo. Overnight, you could lose your job with little or no legal recourse. So when you factor all of that in, you should ask for a salary that is AT LEAST 50% more than (if not double) what you get in the UK just to compensate for your losses.
Thank you prince and Frenchieman.... this is really useful baseline to start negotiations with. Thank you again
Plus education for your children and private healthcare.
Don't charity people work for free? :/
.....and just to add a bit more about my background... MA graduate, currently working as country director for a UK charity in Africa, over 10 years experience in the NGO/charity sector. Current annual salary in the range of QR247,000 with medical, flights and accommodation all paid for in full.
