Salary negotiation and some questions

By bunnypanda •
Hi all,
I got an invitation to Doha to have an interview with a big state-owned enterprise. Indeed, we haven't agreed on my package yet.
Let's say, I asked for 20K at the beginning, and then they offered me 10K+benefits. I then returned an email to insist that the basic salary should be at least 16K.
They didn't say okay or not, and simply invited me to Doha. Do you think that it implies they are okay with my asking price, 16K? Or they will still negotiate the salary when I go to Doha?
Many thanks.
What industry are you in?
I don't understand why anybody who isn't in oil and gas would choose Qatar over other Gulf countries to live and work???
I think by the end of '08 Qatar will also have the highest cost of living in the Gulf. Factor in value for money and it's definitely already the most expensive Country in the Gulf.
My order would be:
1. UAE
2. Bahrain
3. Oman
4. Qatar (a distant 4th I might add)
"What other problems would I face if I really come to Doha?"
The answer will be in your QL posts once you're here.
(i) Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world.
(ii) taxi cost peanuts, but the problem is to find it.. even booking a taxi over the phone is a huge problem..they never have it available
(iii)forget about the system you were brought up in... put it upside down, turn it over.. and enjoy what you got...although food is pretty various, different sorts of cuisine not as many as in North America though...
(iv) you don't need arabic at all to live and to work here .. but i personally take arabic courses out of respect to the country where i live, and just because I like to learn languages...
come here and you will have a lot of fun as well as challenges and adventure...

16k for a Senior Analyst actually sounds low if that's the position you are applying for. Hopefully the other perks in the package are good.
And if they offer you accommodation MAKE SURE you get them to show it to you while you are here. I know a few people that thought they were getting a nice accommodation before coming here and once they got here the place was a dump. Accommodation can be such a headache that it is the tipping point where people say it isn't worth being here and leave.
are just that. They can be removed but many companies won't remove them, others may.
It depends on the company

Bunny panda apology! I posted my question in your post whoops

Hi would appreciate your help.I have been given an initial offer and apart from the basic salary and allowances they have given a monthly allowance called 20% CSA.Is this standard and can it be taken away in the future? Thanks for the massive amount of useful info that is available on the site. Hope to be in Qatar soon!
Thanks for all replies. Indeed, they already gave me a rough figure of other benefits, i.e. accommodation, transportation, air tickets, etc. Since it is a state-owned enterprise, I believe the terms are quite standard for my rank (or can I still ask for more?)
1. Since I am married, they said they will provide a nice apartment for a couple. My wife doesn't want to come with me indeed, do you think it is possible that I ask for a single accommodation in return for better salary?
2. I heard that the turnover rate is quite high. What is your opinion? personal reason? difference in expectation?
3. 16K is an tempting offer to me that I would probably jump for it. I assume doha is a safe city, might be a bit dry and boring, like the Midwest city in the states.
(i) Is it safe? Is robbery/thivery happen quite common in Doha, compared to the UK and the states?
(ii) How much does it cost to take taxi for 20 mins? Is it safe to take taxi everyday?
(iii) I think I can easily adapt into a new environment, I am okay with all sorts of cultural shocks, and I am not picky about food. What other problems would I face if I really come to Doha?
(iv) Would you recommend me taking Arabic course? Or can I simply live without the knowledge of Arabic?
16K basic is good offer bt make sure wt others benift u may be offered by employer--i agree with mgholzan.. main purpose to evaluate u face to face--and it's common. any of the case at last it will be yours decision to join or not. best of luck
Hey buddy,
Always Live by the simple yet important rule,
Not in Writing, Forget Signing on any Paper...
Things that we will take care of when you come down, all those lets not get into those hassles..things change when you come down, so before you hit Reality ensure that you know whats coming your way...
Cheers...
And yes 16K for a Basic is pretty much a decent deal, and ofcourse dont forget thats only the basic and then comes the + +...Benefits I mean...
Everything depends on which company you are dealing with and what's you nationality.
Don't forget to make sure that the company will provide accomodation (not accom. allowance), transport or transportation money, medical insurance, free air ticket/s and so on.
And as Novi said, make sure that all this will be in your contract.
for which post it is?
my advice ... what ever they offer you ... before you say 'yes' make sure you see all the term / perks / amount in writing.
from what is see, they want to see u so they can evaluate u, its not a yes from them, so act upon that.
"seems they are ok if u worth it"., hope u all the best.
