Lefern, I think this is a situation best discussed with your maid.  Personally I would give her the choice.  Many maids are here without family and friends and may find the idea of 3 or more days off with nowhere to go a bit daunting, and may prefer to work.  Vice versa, she may want the days off or to save the days for later on (perhaps to take with her annual holiday?). I would give her the option.  Also, I would say if she chose to work, then perhaps give her the gift of a little "overtime" cash (you may not want to if she's saving the days for later, but it's an option).Myself, I always liked the option of working during one of the Eids to take extra time off at Christmas.   But that's my choice.

To the OP- Do you or your husband works on public holidays? No! and If you do, at least you get compensated for doing so, like having double pay. I dont see your househelp to be in exception to this.

Servant? how inhumane :(

Alumnar, you make false assumptions.  I pay my maid in wages and benefits according to the contract.  Unlike you, I see her as adult and equal who can make own decisions.  She chose to come to Qatar to be a maid by these terms.  I honor them.  That is treating with respect and dignity.  To think of her as charity case and inferior and needing our pity and help is condescending to her and racist.  YOu are the ones who think themselves soooo superior.  LOL.So are you going to liberate the waiters on Fridays and over Eid?  No?  Why not then?  It because you NEED them to serve YOU?  LOL.  What hypocrisy and snobbery on QL.

Its because of many like these people, its really difficult to find proper maids.. Everyday you see people looking desperately for maids.. They are human beings same like us. They deserve to be treated the same way.. Please give them what they deserve.. It took me nearly two months to get me one.. Im fair to her and so far she has not given us a reason to complain. It all depends on how you treat them.

Lefern, if you don't like the truth and are just another slavedriver then please, next time, don't ask the question on a public forum. It's because of people like you and 2012 that so many maids run away and seek help from their Embassies or even just dissapear from the sponsorship radar. If you treated them right, with dignity and respect, then this would not happen. You obviously don't follow labour law - of course not! And why is your maid working extra hours ILEGALLY with somebody else lefern? She needs to complement the low salary you pay her? And yours, 2012? She gets the 400 USD dictated by law?

Shame on people like you. No repect for anybody. They might be your housrhelpers - but first of all they are HUMAN BEINGS like YOU and Allah sees them as equals, unlike you do!

Thanks for your kind advice, really appreciate that! you are the one in this forum who really understand my situation :) In fact I have been given her all her freedom to work part time apart from her normal working hours else where, I am just worry that she has been working too hard. I will keep my silence for most of the unreasonable replies, as it's no point arguing with them, a waste of time. Thanks again! Take care!

Your inability realize a maid is a servant shows your class guilt.  LOL.  They are in Qatar to work as servants to families.  My family needs her over Eid holidays so she works then.  The contract does not stipulate public holidays only days off per week.A maid is a servant.  She knows that.  She is a adult.  She signs the contract freely.  If she feels she is cheated she can complain to authorities.Almost all maids are working over Eid.  Many people work over Eid.  You plan to attack the restaraunts for having waiters working over Eid?   No, probably not because YOU need them to SERVE your food.  LOL!

"If she is not Muslim why she need Eid holiday off?"Because Eid is a PUBLIC holiday for ALL regardless of faith as per the law in Qatar. And your use of the word 'servant' betrays your level of empathy and humanity wonderfully

Because that is when the family is at home and when assistance is needed.  Servants may have a different day off.  If not by contract then by agreement with maid.  If she is not Muslim why she need Eid holiday off?

He or she would not have to "earn" it per a contract. Either she get's it or she doesn't!  If a person is humane, they will give it to her, because what person in there right mind would have a maid be working while everyone else is enjoying time with their families.  She is a maid... not a doctor.  Doctor's are need pretty much 24 hours a day.  My job requires someone to be on duty 24 hours a day as well.  Why would you NEED to have a maid working on holidays?

The maid is an adult free to enter into a contract.  If she agrees to 6 days a week, then so be it.  If she can negotiate for better salary and better holiday, so be it.  She is a employee not charity case.  You do not "give" her salary or holiday.  She earns it as per the contract.  If she dislikes the terms of her contact she may left when it finishes. No one should feel guilt over this.

"...she has 2 days off every week" big deal! Do you work 7 days a week yourself, as an "homemaker" who employs a maid do you even work at all?

2012 Olympics God needs to change your status in life, make you a maid for 3 years so you can learn some humanity lessons.

I can imagine what kind of person you are 2012 - and let's leave it like that, shall we?

To the OP, why ask if you say you ALREADY give her 2 days off a week? Yoi find it too much? Then maybe you should listen to 2012, chain your housemaid to the kitchen sink, feed her leftovers, deprive her from having a personal life and and and...!!! :-/

By anonymous• 2 Sep 2011 23:24

Then you allready give her too much holiday.

Thanks for all your advises. Just for your info, she has 2 days off every week, Fri & sat.

I sponsor our house maid and I go by the rules in which my sponsor puts on me. I'm entitled to Public Holidays and so, therefore, is my housemaid. Mine has just returned from a month holiday and is still entitled to her Public Holidays AND days off (heaven forbid!!!!).......But she's worth it because she is happy and rested!!

she deserves those days off. Especially if she has family.  But if she wishes to work, because she needs the money... then that is up to you.

It all depends on the contractual obligations, however, being a maid, she  too deserves rest, a holiday, if not for 3 days atleast for 2 days and on mutual understanding she can come for 2 hours atleast depending on the needs. Besides all, the flexibility between both is more useful tool here, take care......

No.  And if she lives with you no.  Exception is if the public holiday falls on her normal day off.  If you needs her on those days she must work for you.

they're also human. so it would be nice if u'd give her a break. but as  the holidays are meager in this part of the world. it won't be much

Do you or does your husband get public holidays off and paid for? There lies your answer. Be fair and remember that your housemaid is a human being like you.
