Potential job offer...advise please

Dear All,

I have been offered QAR 20,000 per month - tax free (all inclusive - accommodation, tranport) plus 2 flights home for a senior analyst role with one of the well known Qatari organisation. I need to understand, if this offer is suffice to maintain good living standards and have some savings.

As for me, I am a British Citizen with Master's qualifications and around 7years of experience in the industry. I am currently on around QAR 19,000 per month (all inclusive) in UK, which is taxed. This will be around QAR 15,500 per month after UK tax.

So can someone please tell me what is the average expat salary in Qatar with similar experience? I feel the offer is on the lower side..

Thanks in advance..

If you haven't been paid for 5 months then its an excellent offer. Yes easy for your wife to learn English here

I THINK you confused me with someone else

i did nt say i have the same salary here in greece.

i had a good salary, BUT there is a but...

... the situation here in Greece is very fluid due to the crisis and i work in a company without any payment for 5 months.

so now we have this opportunity to start over in qatar..

you describe things like hell there!!!

i m dissapointed!!!

i didn't say it's not good.. but you say you have about the same back home.. so why to change? Life is different here, and unless money is good why to sacrifice your family, your friends, especially since your wife doesn't know anyone here, and it will be quite difficult for her to communicate.. she is the first one who will start to complain.. there are not too many places to go.. she will be home all day, alone.. I would kill myself if I had to maintain such life.. This is my point.

You can survive on 23,500 QAR. You can rent little low-to-medium quality 2 br apartment for about 7000. You can have a car for about 1800-2000 a month. Utilities about 1,000. You will spend about 3000-3500 for basic household for two. 4000 goes back home. If you like bars, nightclubs, restaurants, etc. that will cost you quite a lot.. If you like good quality clothes, want to travel, etc. - all that is expensive here.. Qatar Airways is one of the most expensive airlines in the world. And they are pretty much monopoly here.. not much left.. and again, you will have to sacrifice your habitual lifestyle, and your wife will be crying.. unless she doesn't want to see anyone.. yes, she can learn english.. it's expensive, there is no public transportation, people do not walk on the streets..

bottom line, calculate what you are losing and what you are gainig..

people don't come here (for money reason), unless they make at least 1,5-2 times more than back home..

Nekis, relax.. your offer isn't similar... your offer for the engineer ‘s position is quite average.. you have to evaluate what you are going to gain by accepting this position. I'd say, nothing.. then why to change? And yes, your wife WILL freak out, as you say.. there is nowhere to go and there is nothing to do here, since she doesn't speak english.. unless she is going to shop every day, in this case your salary will be enough for the first week of each month only.

loveraero's offer is too low considering his education, position, "qatari organization', and western experience..

senior analyst with Masters degree - 20,000?? This 'Qatari organisation' must be kidding.. they have to pay about twice as much..

Unfortunately this is a fair offer given what your current salary is in the UK.

20,000 and a 6,500 accommodation allowance or a fully furnished 2 bedroom should be additional to your 20,000 QAR, not deducted from it !!

There is the two problems. 1. You are a couple. 2. Decent expat living in the western world. Both those things make the offer unacceptable.

Thanks guys for all your comments...Just to add more on that I now have an option to take accommodatoin allowance up to QAR 6,500 or a fully furnished 2 bedroom company accommodation. This will leave with QAR 13,500 for food, bills and transport expenses/savings (if any). As a couple, we are not planning to share accommodation with anyone nor wish to live in an industrial areas like others.

I am fully aware eating/drinking will be expensive depending on the quality of living. But I am not planning for high end living, but more of a decent expat living like we all do in western world...

Any further advice will be appreciated..!

If you accept living in the industrial area and sharing a room with 10 Indians then you can save money.

If you like eating, drinking and not sharing a room with others then it will cost you to live here.

However if you can drink petrol as it's cheaper than water it might be worth reconsidering.

Direct flights on QA are expensive as well.

I don't think it is reasonable for you to transfer

In that little difference from what you have now, considering you might have a bad experience when you transfer.

Try to bid a bit higher...

some of my friends had more than what you been offered for :D

you need to be making almost double your salary from the UK to survive. EVERYTHING except petrol is considerably more expensive here.

Are they giving you a place to live on top of the 20k, and is it furnished? Or do you just get a housing allowance? Because that would make a difference.

You *can* find a decent apartment for 4-5000 riyals a month but would have to search high and low for it, and at that price range may still have to invest in things like furniture and appliances (Air conditioners, washing machines, water heater replacements). That is, if you are coming over with family. If you are alone it would be easier to find a furnished place for around 5k.

Normally I would chuckle at this kind of discussion because I know many, many people surviving here and having a grand old time with far less. But, if you feel like you are giving up a great deal to come here, with your level of education and experience it sounds like a low offer that should be negotiated or passed over.

Forget it, you need more - negotiate

They should offer at least 30,000 - 35,000 riyals... forget it , 20,000 as a full package is very low, try to negotiate of have this package and they provide you a decent accommodation !!

cost of living here is high. but yes, it is tax free.

Do you research about the cost of living and then take the decision.

OMG, you will never surive on that. A decent apartment will set you back 9,000 QR and it's 7 pound a pint here, so that's the rest of your salary gone.
