Is this package reasonable?
By babacar_95 •
Hello all,
I would like to get your inputs to make a decision. I'm married with five children and got the following offer for Qatar:
50,000 US$ +bonus +family air tickets(inclusive of housing).
Is there anything else I should ask for? Could I make any savings? We don't usually eat out and have a very simple life. Thanks in advance.
Thanks again. Information is very helpful.
It should be in your salary expectations.

Thanks mandi. Did not get a chance to check back in until now. Is the 25% overseas bonus going to be part of their package? Or should I include in my salary expectations?
If you are moving from the US the general rule is your best salary plus a 25% overseas bonus, plus housing, plus transportation, plus medical, plus a business class airfares a year each.

Hello,
I am new in this forum and would be needing help in regards to salary, grade level, benefits for an IT Auditor position in QP. I currently work for a technology company in Silicon Valley, CA. If ever I make it through the interview and get a job offer from QP, it will just be me and my husband moving.
All info gathered is greatly appreciated.
As long as you HAVE a job in this economy in the States, even if you commute between Maryland and Virginia, I think you are MUCH better off than uprooting your wife and 5 kids to come here and have a much lower lifestyle. People considering coming here are usually fed all kinds of lies about how it is cheaper to live here. It is much more expensive than anywhere I have ever lived in the States, and I moved around a lot.

Thanks a lot to all of you for your great suggestions. I went back and asked many questions in regards to housing, car, tuition, health care allowances but unless they're just taking their time, I might have scared them away. I currently live in one state and work in another so it's not that fun. I guess I have to wait for the right opportunity. Thanks again.
Yep negotiate further..

HE WHO DARES WINS
I will say "negotiate".
Do you have any agreement with your company on sending your family here once you started working?
babacar_95 ,
If 50k is half of your current salary, do not even think of taking that opportunity. Doha is very expensive though, a modest 2 bedroom apt is atleast USD 3K/month. Unless there is any other reason, I think you are better off with your current salary what you get in the USA.
Frankly speaking , in this country not much to do, so your salary has to be atleast better than your current salary range. Give you little more idea, here most of good companies provide you with a basic salary + housing allowances + furniture allowances + a monthly tranportaion allowances + school fees (based on ur country of origin) + yearly air ticket + interest free car loan.
Cheers
would come here for that amount if you are making more where you are. Unless you want the challenges of living under extremely rapid inflation with a salary that leaves little breathing room. No way would I come here in your situation for under $80,000 plus housing, car allowance, air tickets and school expenses. Bear in mind you will need to pay US taxes on your total taxable income over $85,000 and that will include the market value of your housing allowance and your air tickets (all taxable income).

Oh, my goodness, babacar, don't even THINK about leaving the US for less money than you are making now! Most of us receive a competitive wage for our profession plus a 25% overseas bonus plus housing plus schooling and transportation. Doha is MORE expensive than the US in terms of living expenses. Rents and school fees make it very high. Negotiate if you can but run if you must. This is NOT a good deal.

Babacar..is this 50k per month? or 50k usd per annum..
Go for it , if its 50k usd per month.
Ouch Mandilulur!!! Then why should I even bother? I thought life was cheaper in Qatar than it is in the US, was hoping I could save at least $1500/month if I get house allowance and the kids home school. My wife is a teacher as well.
Thanks for your feedback Roots. You think it's good? This won't even be half of what I'm currently getting. I'm from Baltimore in Maryland.
Thanks nomansland, that is per anum. I guess I need to further negotiate.
You will spend over half that salary on housing and the other half on school fees.

babacar_95 ,
First of all, congratulations!! If you get housing allowances, it is not not a bad offer for DB Admin in Qatar. But I am affraid that schooling would be really challenging and expensive for 5 children, as MagicDragon already mentioned. I am not too sure about the home schooling network in Qatar, I think there is a group, I have seen in the forum before.
$50k for a 6 years of experience, I would say not bad. Btw, which city/state are you from?
Good luck and cheers!!
Hi babcar 50K USD is it per anum or per month , if it is per/year then you should get atleast $78000 as an oracle engineer & being a citizen of US as salary ranges for europeans from $7k to $20k /month
I appreciate your advice, I will.
babacar, I really advise you to negotiate the schooling. Good luck.
Thanks MagicDragon, $50K doesn't include housing. They haven't mentioned anything about schooling. My kids are home schooled. By the way I'm an Oracle database administrator with 6 years of experience, I forgot to mention it earlier.
And for the five children; you will pay an arm and a leg for their school. Ask the company for school fees. (American School of Doha around 18.000 US $ per child per year!)
Make sure the housing is not inlcuded in the 50.000 US $!
