Hi Everyone,
I am considering a move to Doha to work in recruitment. To start off I will earn 12,000 QAR per month, rising to around 18,000 - 20,000 once commission kicks in.
I will be living by myself and wondered if this salary would offer a decent standard of living in terms of rent, groceries, utilities and hopefully sending some money home to my family.
Also, any additional information on first time living in Doha would be appreciated. Many Thanks :)
Everything miklo says is accurate.
Rent here is more of your salary than you would pay in tax in most countries.
You will survive on that salary but don't expect to save much each month.
All depends on your total package. If accommodation is provided you should be ok, as long as you don't live beyond your means, as many expats do here. There the ones who bail when they realize that the nice new car, nanny, maid and fancy restaurants actually need to be paid for. As Miklo says, if accom is provided, you need to know where so you can enquire about the area, quality of housing and indeed the neighbours.
You can get a Suzuki Swift for around 1700QR per month if you rent for 6 months or more, or a Chevrolet Epica for 1800QR.
Hi Lady Lou, Let me give you a crystal clear idea of how things work here in Qatar based on my experiences thus far, Recently moved from Thailand roughly 4 weeks ago, I’m a British Expat working primarily in the education sector though my expertise are pretty extensive in terms of employment. Finding reliable work here is a nightmare. I’m not sure where you’re moving from so offering that bit of info would help to offer a comparison on what the expenses are like here. Rent here is extortionate: is this part of your employment agreement? Always ask for pictures if the employer is fixing this arrangement for you. Otherwise if you are looking for independent accommodation its going to set you back for a furnished one bedroom reasonable condition and away from very noisy and inconsiderate South Indian families around 3,000QR. Food shopping you can budget on around 250 - 300 QR per week depending on your requirements to be safe call it 500 a Week. Eating out anywhere half descent around 100QR per meal. Transport this is a huge fiasco, Taxis here in Qatar are very expensive and again you will have many South Indian men trying to rip you off, I spend at the moment around 80QR a day to get to work and back. A car would make your life much easier fuel is very reasonable but a rental car would cost around 1900 QR minimum but that depends on the type of car you decide upon but 1900 QR per month would get you a very good car, but driving here for a newbie can be a nightmare people are very inconsiderate and very aggressive on the roads so i would suggest private taxi for the first month or so, you can get a number for a driver who will pick you up and drop you off etc much better than the meter taxis as they are not reliable. If you can get a good taxi driver number it will go a long way but its setting me back around 2000QR a month on transport ( a rental car would only offer me freedom that’s what i have deduced thus far). You should be able to send home around 2 to 3000QR once you are settled in in the initial period but once you start earning more money i am sure this will increase.
I want to apologise well in advance for the witty comments you will receive on here so many idiots and retards here in Qatar Phonejackers from the south Indian continent.
Anyway all I’m doing here is Paying it Forward, nobody really has helped me while i have been here but i want to genuinely offer help and advice anything else just drop a response and i will try my best. Also if you can help me find a better job that would be much appreciated Best Wishes
It depends upon how you spend. Human wants are unlimited.
