Move or not to move
Hello all,
I am a civil engineer and I have been offered 2500 dolars per month. I am married and have no kids. Can you pls help me about making my this important decision about moving to Qatar.
- Construction site is at Doha(close to Doha 15 minutes by car)
- They do not give housing.
Can we have any chance to live with this salary there?
Regards.
Missed this all day yesterday.
Ok 2,500 dollars a month to uproot your family to Doha is simply not enough I don't care where you are from. with no housing allowance you have got to be joking !.
It doesn't matter about Norwich or central London or the guys experience, it simply is NOT enough to uproot and come here for.
PLUS !!!
If the guy is Indian Egyptian, Jordanian wherever except Western Europe or Noth American the guy is probably gonna be treating poorly by the employer and most likely get so screwed that he has to send his wife and family home, live here alone and then spend 10 years saving enough money to actually make the whole god awful experience worth while.
So NO don't whatever you do come here on that money. Infact I wish the people digging the roads and doing all the SH!tty jobs here could read this forum so we could stop them from coming here.
Think about this, rents are high almost approaching Norwich prices. Prices in supermarkets are high, its not cheap to live here.
Yet GDP is the Highest in the world and people pay 600 Rials A MONTH to people to dig the road. Or a little more to work in a bank or other low paying clerical work or be a TEA boy. A friggin Tea boy how many of us had those in the UK or wherever else, what happened to your two legs and the ability to get UP OFF YOUR ASS.
The richest country in the World paying 100 pounds a month to people, just think about that. THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. (per capita GDP)
Don't even mention supply and demand, The UK has a minimum wage of 5.52 pond an hour, would it really kill all these people to pay that, I mean I am pretty sure Qtel and the like could probably afford it after all its not like their service is cheap.
Rant over, don't come here without housing pure and simple. Anyone that does it getting EXPLOITED.
Nighty Night... have sweet dreams
"Now it is up to the original poster to decide."
----> I agree ... now i am off to bed. Good nite :-)
Novita, i am not disputing your point of quality of living with 2500 USD a month.
I believe it is low and that it does not provide good quality of life in any part of the world (even in India); however, we can not deny that this is the market price for an engineer with such Qualifications (even in the UK).
Now it is up to the original poster to decide.
"so Novita you are confirming my points above
What you are saying is that the 2500 USD per month in doha is the same as (3,300 USD that is paid in UK less 20% income taxes) .. means that the engineer in Doha will get paid exactly the same as what he will get paid in the UK?"
----> The salary you stated above is for fresh graduate right? In the UK ... most people living single when they started that salary. No wife and no family.
... you persuade this guy to come here with that amount of money , will you responsible or will you help him when he found out that he can't make ends meet?
Part of it i agree you saying that Doha is cheaper than London. But i truely believe with USD 2500, the OP (original poster) will live miserably in Doha. Especially when he plan to bring his wife here. What life the wife going to have to live in 1 room for QR 1500???
so Novita you are confirming my points above

ofcourse Doha cheaper than Norwich means his value of the 2500 is better than the 3300 in UK
Exactly, this is what i meant.
Doha is cheaper than london, hence this justified the difference in monthly salary from 3300 in UK to 2500 in Doha.
as an example, take this job that pays 18000 GBp per month in Norwich - Uk.
http://www.justengineers.net/vacancies/vacancy-details.asp?id=415601
do a search at http://www.norwichletting.co.uk/ for property in Norwich
you will notice that the cheapest ONE ROOM in Norwich (ROOM) is 375 GBP.. compared to room rent of 1500 QR ~ 204 GBP in doha
Have you calculate 20 percents minimum for income taxes?
Anyway ... what i am trying to say USD 2500 ... you will ended up suffering in Doha. Works your a$$ off not making anything, you spend most of your salary to pay acommodation, even worse if your employer not releasing you to get a better paid job in Doha.
I leave the decision up to OP (Original Poster). :-)
You cant compare Doha with Central London. You got to be kidding. 1000 GBP for somewhere in the area like Durham.
Why on earth you compare Doha with London?

Novita...
1000 GBP for a villa in central LONDON?
i would rent it NOW
please Check these job postings in the UK with position similar to above and see how much a civil engineer (geo-technical) gets paid in the UK
starting 18,0000 GBP http://www.justengineers.net/vacancies/vacancy-details.asp?id=415601
this has starting 21000 GBP http://www.justengineers.net/vacancies/vacancy-details.asp?id=416994
i hope that above is enough proof that I did not differentiate between nationalities as you put it.
"How much do you think an engineer without any experience is paid in the UK? knowing that rent in the UK is much higher than in Doha?"
---> You got to be kidding isn't it? For 1.000 poundsterling you can rent 3 bedroom villa in the UK, what you can get for that money in Doha???
Hi Avid user
i did not differentiate, what i mentioned is what is paid for Lebanese and Syrian, Jordanians and many other nationalities.
Why do you expect a company to pay some one with no experience more than the market price?
How much do you think an engineer without any experience is paid in the UK? knowing that rent in the UK is much higher than in Doha?
in UK a Site Engineer gets paid 20 to 25 K per annum; i.e ~ 3300 to 4000 USD . Considering the difference in inflation etc. between here nad the UK i would say a 2,500 USD in Doha is fair compared to 3,300 in UK.
so why do you want a company to pay a fresh engineer more than he is paid in the UK?
We are missing somrthing here, 2,500 Dollars may be a fortune for an Indian National compared to what can be presently be earnt at home. So yeah it sounds great.
But India or the Filipines etc are much much cheaper to live in. So the money just can not be compared.
I strongly advise anyone once again to think very carefully about moving here without your housing already organised for you or at the very least a substantial housing allowance included.
Just because you are from India of some where else in the developing world why should you not at the very least get a decent housing allowance.
I think People can get dazzled by figures that seem unreal compared to what they are on now but factor in cost of living and you will be musch worse off or No better off and worse of all you have moved to Qatar.
Hi three years NON GCC experience is not usually considered, you should get 1,000 - 1,500 USD as basic add to it housing allowance in a shared accommodation (usually a room withing a flat) costs around 700 USD + shared car ~ 300 USD + mobile ~ 100 USD
Total = 1500 + 700 + 300 +100 = 2500 which sounds just right for some one with your experience.
now since you are married, I do not know if you will accept shared accommodation; however, usually engineers with experience like yours are single and do not mind sharing accommodation.
After a year with GCC experience you should have on top of above 1000 USD extra.
i'm a civil engineer and have masters degree on geotechnical engineering.
1- 3 years of experience
2- In turkey
3- This job is site engineering. And common i think.
seems we will not move under this circumstances.
thank you very much everybody.
HI first you have to advice about your qualifications:
1 - years of experience
2 - country you gained this experience
3 - How many can fill your job? is it a rare job or common?
then it can be properly evaluated.
take note that you will find accommodation as expensive, the cheapest is in labor camps for 1550 QR ~ 425 USD per month (but you can share with another family in an apartment or Villa) and again it depends on the quality of life you are looking for.
note for transportation you will for sure need a car, as taxis are expensive
Pwede na yong $2,500. huwag mo lang dalhin muna yung asawa mo. you can rent a room here for QAR1,500, magtanong tanong ka lang sa mga kapwa pilipino. food mo mga QAR1,500, transpo, pwede ka mag rent QAR1,600. may QAR 4,400 ka pang natira, mga Php55,000 din yun. tiis tiis lang muna para makaipon.
If you are talking about only making $2500 USD/month and your employer is not paying for housing or a car please listen to Aviduser. Coming here on that kind of pay without housing or a car - I just don't see how it would work. I admit that I know nothing about the labor camps but you implied that you would be bringing your wife and I would have to believe you would not want her in a labor camp nor would she want to be in a labor camp all day while you worked. In recent topics in QL people have reported that it is even hard to find an apartment under 8000 QR per month which is over $2000 USD. On top of that there have been some real horror stories of people who have been victimized by unscrupulous landlords and they did not have the protection of being in housing leased by their employer. So please - take heed. Finally the issue of sponsorship should be mentioned. If you get here and find a better paying job (and as a civil engineer that should not be hard), you may not be able to take it as your sponsor has complete control over your leaving your position with him. Search this site for sponsorship information also before making a decision to come here as their are other issues to be aware of with respect to sponsorship. Good Luck.
Avid user, not every one eats at restaurants.. some cook...
some go to restaurants like me...
Some cook .. some save, the best comment is what rajnaik1985 said...

Don't bother, on that sort of money you will have a terrible life here. I mean really terrible. You will struggle to find accommodation, transport and eat.
Please DO NOT do it. Same goes for anyone whatever nationality you are or where you live.
If Housing is not included in your package DO NOT come here. You will be at the mercy of Greedy robbing landlords as many people on this site have found out.
Think very carefully about a move here but if accommodation is not included don't even bother.
it all depends what is your situation in home country.
if you are earning 1/3 of this ,let us in india, it will not recommend you to come here.
family housing is a major chanllange. keep in mind. do not come here with a view to save too much. Any way you will save some money.
Even if you do not have kids, you need a house to keep your better half. She may not be happy in a very small house if you have lived in a big house in your home country. At young age, when we move, our quality of life should not deteriorate too much. If family is not happy with you, even if you earn million dollar it is not important. Ca
Again calculate how much more you can save here compare to your presnet situation (Saving and not earning )
regards,
raj
I'm no engineer, not even close and I can say that I will be getting a lot more than that and a villa, car allowance, travel, health insurance, and others are included and I'm single. I would say that is a really raw deal.
... and no housing. You can make it...as long as you don't eat, drink or bath.
