Is it worth it or not?
Hi I am a single parent with 2 kids ages 7 and 9. my kids live with my parents right now in lebanon, I am Canadian chef with 17 years experience in canada, I never had the hotel working experience except for 2 years.
I got a job offer from one of the finest hotels in Doha. I would like to know if this offer is good or not?
My job offer is 8500 QR/ month provided with an apartment, food , med/health insurance, transportation( from and to work ) and paid one air line ticket once a year.
is this a good deal or not?
By the way I don't go out much, and not into the nightlife. I might need a car for my own travel dose it cost too much and what about car insurance prices.
and what about if i decided to bring my kids to live with me in Doha after a year.is it worth it?
I would appreciate any of your opinions.
Thanks in advance!
@canary, you can't say that westerners are getting paid more.
In the catering and restaurant business the average salary for a restaurant is 5,000 - 10,000 if all other expenses are paid.
This I can assure you. Ring up a few restuarants and ask for yourself.
I say the salary is good.
You'll only get 20k and all expenses if you are a chef in a PREMIUM restaurant.
It's sad when people argue that Indians are paid less and they shouldn't be paid according to race, but then westerners say "Westerners are paid more" and have no qualms...

I am pretty sure that we all make choices in life, and we stick with it and try to learne from it, that what makes human superior and advanturer, but it will be better if u can get an idea of what u r getting into before doing it, its like jumping into the water without asking if there is any sharks there, u might be a good swimmer but remmeber that sharks are better swimmer than u lol.
Thanks for all ur comments folks.
When i get my contract i will make my choice.

I disagree with Gypsy. The salary is terrible. I can only assume is for a lower chef position, banquet chef or restaurant chef, and even so it is pretty low. If you are applying for executive sous chef you should be asking around 12,000. For a exec chef make it no less than 20,000.
Push for school fees to be taken care of by the employer, or else you will be screwed.
That's actually a pretty decent salary coming from one of the hotels. However I doubt you'll be able to afford to bring your kids over, sorry to say, schooling is expensive. Depending on which hotel it is though, there is always room to move up, or on. :)

Have the folllowing comments/observations:
1. Am not familiar with hotels salaray scales.
2. Sensed the tone of your under-estimating your experience. I know a lady who was running a small restaurant, then retired to take care of her kids, after few years got a job in one of the 5 star hotels. She did perfect job and lifted the business of the restaurant she was cheffing.
3. Understand that you are looking for a decent living for yourself and your 2 kids. Unfortunately the basic salary can very hardly meet your needs according to the anticipated monthly expenses as follows:
Schooling: 5000 QRs
Car: 1500 - 2500
Maid/Nanny: 1000 - 1500
Elec/Water: 500
Phone/Internet: 250 not including GSM
Let aside food, entertainment, clothing, international calls.
You have to take the following points into consideration:
1. House: is it bachelor status or married. Bachelor means you will be having shared accommodation. God knows who will be your room-mate,
2. If utility bills are covered by the hotel
3. Do they provide transportation from/to house/hotel?
4. Does your medical insurance provide 100% coverage and does it include dental?
Wish I did not miss some vital issues and hope I did not add to your confusion.
PM me if you have any specific questions
Look we get these same posts people asking about salaries and if they should come or not.
1) We are not consultants.
2) Everybody has a choice.
3) There are so many threads about this kind of thing.
4) I am tired of dissatisfied people doing Qatar bashing.
5) Live is full of surprises, and our expectations might not be met but we have to make the best of it.
6) I have lived in many foreign countries where I have made the decisions to go there and I have organised all my papers salaries and living quarters. Not like the people who get the whole thing paid etc. etc. and even get brought into Qatar in a pram lol.
7) Choices are there, make them and be happy with them.
I'm sure by the time this fella answers all these questions, he would go crazy...but truly speaking, very wise questions put forward, indeed fabulous...looks like a person who has seen too many ups and downs in life's offerings...ain't you girl...

1)How do you know it is one of the finest hotels in Doha?
2)Did someone tell you that??
3)How many hours are you working for that salary?
4)You have 17 years of experience I would think you are grossly underpaid.
5)You are a Canadian citizen - Westerners are being paid QR 20.000 - 70.000 for their jobs (whether they are good or bad) + med. + housing
6)This is about CD 2.379 are you presently unemployed?
7)Much against the things you read Qatar has taken a large price hike in recent months food is more expensive than before especially milk and eggs (might be because of the bird flu.
8)Did you ask if you were sharing your appartment?
9)What does your medical insurance cover?
8) You will need a car in Doha this is part of the life here - without a car you are handicapped.
These are not questions where I don't want to know the answers to but things you should know and ask yourself. Afterwards you might not be happy and then you will blame Qatar for your disappointment - you have the choice so you make it. You will receive many answers and may base your decision on that however it is a big move so choose wisely.
