hi, simple term. gratuity = pension = retirement plan

if the company already have a pension plan for its employees which works out better than the '21 days for each yr of service' benefit, as provided under the qatar labour law, then the company are not obligated to calculate or pay end of service benefit to their employee when they leave the company.

in singapore, they have the cpf, in malaysia, the epf (which are government control and compulsory) ... but i think, in the uk, us , australia, etc, you have more flexibility to select and chose the pension fund you want to contribute to (or depending on your company's choice).

here in qatar, i think ultimately as an expat, we will leave anyway, so instead of the government maintaining a pension fund for us, we get paid an accumulated gratuity to take with us when we leave the current employment... so invest wisely when you have the lumpsum paid to you :)

Gratuity or ESB End of Service Benefit is normally one month salary for every year worked, which one receives at the end of the service at leaving.

As per Qatar Labour Law, if you completed one year of service your are entitled for 3 weeks gratuity or like a separation pay. And the fraction if you completed more than one year. Just to give you an idea of our computation:

Given:

- Gratuity(G); = 3 weeks = 21 days per year

- Service days(SR): 1 1/2 years = 365 + 183 days = 548 days

- Basic Salary Example(BS): 3000 QR = 100 per day

- Formula:(SR/365)x G x (BS/30)

- Solution:

= (548/365)x 21 x (3000/30)

= Service gratuity = 3,152.87 for 1 1/2 years

I hope it is clear to you and that our computation may some other company have different.

Gratuity - means bonus or benefits which you can only acquire when you finished/ended your service with your company. Every year of service (completed 1 year), you have 30 days or 21 days (depends on the contract and position) full compensation of your basic salary.

Gratuity is the End of Service Benefit stipulated by the Qatar Labour Law. The best place to read is the Qatar Labour Law itself, which is very clear.

The calculation is 3 weeks latest basic salary times the no. of completed years.
