Is this feasible?

HI all,

I am a single 25 year old female potentially moving to Qatar from Dubai, can anyone give me an idea whether an overall package of around 35K QR would be enough for me to pay my rent, live off, and save something as well. I am not sure how it compares with the cost of living in Dubai so any feedback will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Check the various newspaper websites (Qatar Times, Peninsula, etc) for an idea about prices etc. I assume if you're working on the Corniche it's in the main business area - it's probably the most expensive for housing but in some ways fairly convenient depending on your lifestyle.

Again, it depends on what you want/expect/need - building with gym/pool? Building with good security with good maintenance? The ads in the newspapers will give you some agent names and numbers - can't help there because my employer provides my accomodation - might be able to advise on areas and commute times.

Thanks all, much appreciated! Yes it will be around 35k p/m.

I have 4x4 here which I am hoping to bring with me, rather than sell at a loss and buy another, as I bought it brand new 2 years ago. Just need to work a way around paying the loan etc.

I am not the extravagant type, I like to go out once or twice a week, but not a huge drinker even then. I can't remember the last time I went in Spinneys here so I am sure that won't be a problem.

Can you give me an idea of where would be a good place to live if I am working on the corniche? I want to be as close as possible really. Any good agents that can help me find a decent place?

Thanks again!

It's all the same, minor difference here and there.

You can get a decent (by Western standards) 2 or perhaps even a 3 bed flat (fully furnished, probably with utilities and internet included) for about 7500 - 10,000/month - perhaps less because there are a lot of vacant properties around. You will need either a car or driver which will probably set you back about 2000 (for a Corolla or similar) a month. What you consider essential to your standard of living will impact on your expenses.

Consider too that if you enjoy a malt or grape beverage when you go out, prices are equivalent to the better hotels in Dubai and prices at the QDC are not a bargain.

If you shop at Spinneys (and no where else), insist on NZ or OZ beef and European poultry and produce, eat out a couple of times a week in Dubai, you'll find your saving ability significantly curtailed. If you can forgo the "name" brands and shop at places like Lulu - you'll do better. Clothing is another issue altogether.

Be aware that although rental prices have come down significantly lately, having an allowance vs provided accomodation is always a crap shoot here (as in Dubai) because what comes down can go back up.

is this 35k per month??? If yes, that is a lot and you should be able to save nicely.
