Australian Salary compared to Qatar Income
Hello All,
I am a new user to the site and found it due to an offer to work in Qatar (Still waiting on figures).
However during my search through this forum I have seen some excellent feed back on the things to look for in a contract before committing.
I am an Australian (Pom Expat) and work in the Construction Industry and have been in Supervision/Superintendent/Project Coordinator Roles for the last 15 years.
I have been on a very good wicket (Ex Cricketer) for the last 3 years as a contractor and averaging between $150-200,000 Australian Gross per year plus Super
Would anyone be within this industry at a Site Management level that could give me some ideas on what to expect? The company is a major player in Saudi for portable buildings and according to the agency I have used they say that the salary wont be as much but when you take in to consideration of your Net earning and no cost of living except for food you are better off.
But looking at some of the early threads it looks like Qatar cost of living is a lot higher than in Australia. Info I have on the benefits so far is
Good Expat Salary
Relocation assistance,
Family Status (Wife and 2yr old Child
All found accomodation
private schooling,
air tickets each year
fully maintained vehicle
Medical cover.
Would appreciate some direct response by perhaps an Australian or anyone who could give me some advice.
Thanks and look forward to your feedback.

Hi H,
You can find plenty of information around this site regarding moving to Qatar. I have had few problems living here apart from culture-shock and standard moving issues. Contract-wise I haven't had any difficulties, but I transferred to Qatar, working for the Western Consultancy that I was working for in Melbourne before I left.
If you want to contact me feel free to email me at danavard[AT]hotmail.com. I'm happy to provide a contact number for you to ask any questions via email as well.

Thanks Danavard,
As my wife always assumes things I certainly know not too so thanks for the info. Accomodation seams to be the big thing so will confirm this in the contract.
Any other hints will be very much appreciated in regards to contract negotiations.
Thanks
H
I am also an Australian expat, having arrived about 6 weeks ago. Over that short time I have found that the only really expensive item is rent. Seeing as your accommodation is paid for, this won't be a problem for you (however I would recommend checking the accommodation that is being offered - as it may well be a lower standard than what you are used to in Aust). As for the basics (food/fuel etc), everything is else quite cheap. Eating out is possible for less than 10AUD for a main meal at some very tasty restaurants. Basic electronics are cheaper than Australia, however high end items are fairly similar in price. The only other item that I've found slightly more expensive is alcohol.
Hope this helps
