27,000 QAR a month

I've been made an offer to join a University in Education City.

I've been offered a salary of around 27,000 QAR per month(inclusive of transportation allowance). Housing, medical expenses and schooling would be covered by the company. Would be moving from the UK (with my wife and two kids) where I am settled and in a good job and have been working for 10 years. Hold a degree and specialist qualifications in my area of expertise but wanted to ask whether this is a fair offer.

This is more than I'm currently on but get the feeling its a little low given given experience. Do you think it would be worth negotiating for a little more ie. 30,000+? Do HE institutions negotiate or is it only private sector companies?

2kool, you've been offered such a reasonable salary. Say Alhamdu lillah! And grab it!

lol@ Bin Tamim, here we get lots of these people.... they are everywhere nowadays, and many more to come.....

pity Qatar....

I think they should reconsider their offer. How can someone who doesn't know the difference between "their" and "they're" be worth 27,000 Riyals?

what a shame really ! I am wondering did this people with such a silly question are joking or provoking those pure once that they work for 4000 QAR or less and they should pay there own accommodation and all expenses what the same guy just mention that EC will pay for him ,???!!! How come that the same human bean can survive from 4000 or less and other not???!!!!!

What is the reason of question ???? That Arabs are so cheap and foreigner not???

That you have deferent style and needs than Arabs ??? You eat deferent tomato , potato, bread , you use deferent water , air ?????

Wake up people !!!!!!!!

I wouldn't give up on the schooling options just yet. Personally, I think DESS is the best, but Doha College is also a good option for the English national curriculum. Since DESS is only a primary school, most leavers go on to Doha College, which has both a primary and secondary school. Compass is also worth look, as it too has a large number of British expats.

Good luck with your decision.

Firstly let me say it was never my intention to brag about the job/salary. If it came across this way I apologise.

As some of you have acknowledged making the decision to move to Qatar is a life changing one - more so as I would be looking to move with my wife and children. Hence I want to make sure as far as possible its the right decision.

Salary is one of the main cosiderations as from reading some of the posts on the site once you've accepted a salary this is pretty much fixed so I want to make sure I'm happy with this before deciding to make the move. I agree with Starsky that if it was merely salary I was considering you'd see a lot more expats from the West in the middle east.

Thanks for the comments about schooling. This is one of my main concerns as one of my children will be starting primary school in the fall. I've contacted DESS and their full and their waiting lists are also full so if there is no possibility of admission for the next academic year I won't be coming.

Once again thanks for all your comments.

I understand what 2kool is saying. Obviously the salaries in Qatar are considerably more than they are in the UK but for anyone currently working in the UK and considering a move to Qatar, salary is just on facet that needs to be considered when moving to the Middle East. There are the other intangibles - e.g., leaving friends, family, social life, etc., etc. - that must be left behind when moving and these must be adequately compensated for when negotiating contract and salary. If it was a case of "I will earn more money if I go there" and that was the only consideration, you'd probably see a lot Brits looking to move. For a lot of people, you can't beat a bit of Blighty!

Yeah it seems pretty reasonable.. I don't think he is bragging guys. I am working for a local petroleum company and I know it for a fact that Engineers here are getting much more than 27,000 per month.. I think the offer is pretty good so go ahead and accept it.. But make sure they are paying for your children's school fees and your house rent or provide housing because schooling and housing are the top two most costly things over here. Other than that, 27000 is more than enough to live on. Welcome to Qatar.

well you say you are being offered more than what you get presently in UK. In the same breath you say it is low for your experience. Then why not ask your present employer for a hike in pay with regards to your experience.

I always see these kinds of posts and whenever I see one, I get hurt deep inside thinking about what kind of salaries my fellow countrymen are having. It's really all about nationality here. :(

Tax free GBP.54,000 a year..housing, medical and schooling covered. You can't even imagine this salary in the UK. As cabbage said Qatar is a safest place in the world. Not only safest but also a great place to live and raise family. Go ahead.

@BluVander--I know what you are saying, but I don't think this guy is bragging. EC salaries are typically high for people with excellent qualifications in key, specialized positions (just are as they are in many countries).

Having said that, I think it is more useful when people talk in terms of percentages of increase over their existing salary, as it is a better gauge. Numerical amounts don't mean much without a context.

Ignore cabbage, she just likes to get the attention she gets from stirring. Good for you, Cabbage, to give all your money back to your organization. Not all of us are as privileged as you, so we have to worry about providing for our families.

Yes, you should haggle, even though EC is generally a good place to work. If you are working at one of the EC universities in a highly skilled position, you should expect a salary that is 20-40% above the equivalent position in the US (the percentage depends on the demand for the position and your qualifications; it's usually a bigger bump for faculty). So whether or not 27,000 a month is a good deal depends entirely on your position. Medical from EC is good, and currently provided by AXA via the Qatar Foundation. I would ask about housing, because the quality varies, but generally what I have seen is good. One benefit that is fairly standard is home leave allowance. Different companies/universities handle it differently, but generally it is the equivalent of a full economy fair or business fair to your home country. I know at least two of the universities provide its equivalent in cash.

Also, if your children are school age, you should be arranging places as soon as possible, as deadlines for next autumn at the two main English national curriculum schools (DESS and Doha College) have passed or are fast approaching. There are lots of good threads on QL about schools in general for further info. The HR department at your prospective university should be able to help.

Because you are already in a good job, I would suggest, of course, that you think very carefully about coming here. Qatar is a good place to live and work, but like anywhere in the world it has some downsides. Education City is also generally a good place for a expat to work. It has an energetic environment and is full of interesting people; it's also family friendly. If you have not visited already, I would strongly encourage you to do so before committing and bringing your spouse with you. Its a short flight from London and well worth the investment of your time. Visas are given on arrival to UK citizens, and the HR department can arrange housing tours and visits to the schools.

Finally, find out about vacation time. American institutions/companies tend to give very little of it.

i have read several posts asking whether their offer was good or not..

it makes me wonder..

Are they posting it to BRAG their job offer? or are they just really just fishing some info??

why call him a prat? so what it has been voted the safest country, do you think that is maybe because most of the crime here is not reported?

I think you are being a bit of a prat asking this question.

I work in Education at a consultant level; I have to say I can pick and choose when and where I work. I don’t take a salary at the moment as I give it back to help the establishment I represent.

With all the benefits you get of course it is a fantastic offer! You are going to get over 3,000 quid in your hand at the end of the month.

You are also going to live in a country that has been recently voted as the safest place to live in the world.

Why haggle?

Will your employer pay annual tickets home for everyone, schooling for dependents, medical, and accomodation - your msg is not entirely clear on these issues at least to me :)

What kind of housing are they providing? Fully furnished or housing allowance or somewhere in between?

What kind of hours are you working - most in the tertiary sector have 16 to 20 contact hours per week.

if you have all of the above and 20 hours or less contact hours you're probably getting a good offer

hi....

I think its a reasonable offer...especially if they are providing the housing for you and your family....plus the school fees for the kids...

Go for it....

Try negotiate for 30K but 28 is a really goood offer...

Plus you will get to save a significant amount, as foood...petrol...etc...are all cheap here..

Good luck
