A month-long cricket tournament began at Asian Town recently, enthralling the sport’s fans in the country.

Cricketers playing for most teams in the tournament say it’s an opportunity for them to prove their skills, but also believes it will be a healthy exercise during Ramadan.

The tournament, hosted by Ibn Ajayan Projects (IAP) and coinciding with Ramadan, kicked off on June 2.

The T20 Cricket Tournament, organised under the patronage of Ministry of Culture and Sports and in association with Pro Event, will run till July 5.

“In each team, there’re a number of Indian players and they make up almost 40% of the numbers. Most other Asian expatriate communities have also fielded teams in the competition,” said an IAP official.

Salim Abbas, an Indian cricketer said, “It’s a rare opportunity to mix with players from different countries. This tournament creates a common platform for all cricketers”.

Speaking at a Press conference, Ibn Ajayan Projects’ Assistant General Manager Omar Zeidieh said, “Being the first International cricket stadium in Qatar, we’re always trying to promote the game in Qatar. This is the second time we’re organising Ramadan Cricket Tournament. This is a Ramadan gift from us for all the cricket lovers.”

The winning team will receive the Ibn Ajayan Trophy and also QR50,000. The runners-up will be offered QR25,000 and a trophy.

There will also be individual recognitions for ‘Man of the Match’, ‘Best Batsman’, ‘Best All-Rounder’ and ‘Best Bowler’.
