Ramadan Donation Campaign
City Centre is the first of six locations for a HMC stand and trained staff to be on site to provide educational information about organ donation and helping visitors to register as potential organ donors
Information stands promoting organ donor registration include:
Shopping centres:
City Centre (near Carrefour) - from Saturday 21 July
Laguna Mall (near 51 East) - from Sunday 22 July
Landmark (near Haagen-Dazs) - from Monday 23 July
Hyatt Plaza - from Tuesday 24 July
A mobile blood donation van is also available and is going to be at different locations during Ramadan.
HMC location: Blood Donor Center (near HGH, opposite the main car park)
The main objective of the campaign is to help raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and try to address any concerns or misconceptions that people have regarding this.
Organ donation is voluntary and this campaign seeks to encourage people to register as potential organ donors
It has often been shown that when a death occurs, family members take comfort in knowing that through organ donation, some good has resulted from the tragedy – but this realization is helped if the family are already aware of organ donation and know that their loved one has registered as an organ donor
The death of one person can potentially provide a new lease of life for eight other people
People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors
Organs and tissues that can be donated include: heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, corneas, skin, tendons, bone, and heart valves. In Qatar the major requirement has been for kidney transplants, mainly due to the increasing incidence of diabetes patients who develop kidney failure and are on dialyses
Currently HMC has around 500 patients receiving dialyses treatment. Of these, around 120 patients have been deemed to fit the criteria for being placed on the kidney transplant waiting list and are waiting on suitable organs to be available
Select organs, such as kidney and partial liver donations from live donors are one alternative. Usually a family member will opt to donate these organs to save the life of their loved one
There is no national registry of organ donors in Qatar yet, although plans are underway to establish this soon
Even if you have a donor card, your family will be consulted before donation can take place
All major religions, including Islam, approve of organ and tissue donation and consider donation the greatest gift
Another important point to make is that Qatar/HMC have highly trained teams to handle kidney and liver transplants and we encourage anyone who needs this type of operation to do so here rather than go abroad to countries which may not be as strictly regulated. There is a real danger that patients may return with serious complications
Why should I do my transplantation and donation in Qatar?
Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation has a very good record. It provides a safe, high quality service which can be compared to International standard and is accredited by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), a private, non-profit organization in the US that manages the nation's organ transplant system.
There is one waiting list for organ transplantation for Qatari and non Qatari citizens. This is a distinct feature for Qatar from other neighboring countries.
All procedures related to organ donation and transplantation in the State of Qatar are free of charge for all patients including Qatari and non Qatari citizens.
Doha Donation Accord
It is an exemplary model of organ donation promotion that has been developed in Qatar and has become internationally recognized. The Doha Donation Accord rewards the gift of life by respecting, appreciating and recognizing the organ donor’s act as one of heroism.
Doha Donation Accord sets out a framework for organ donation in Qatar:
1. To give the organ donors and their families the Medal of Honor by the highest authorities of State of Qatar.
2. Offering living donors (kidney or part of the liver) the following:
a. Medical insurance throughout life
b. A compensation for any health problems if they occur
c. Life insurance
d. A priority to get renal transplantation in case renal failure is developed in the future
e. Other privileges offered by non governmental institutions such as offering a free flight tickets for repatriation if required
f. All the organ donation expenses are covered including hospital expenses, transportation, residence,
mobile phone communication, etc
g. Loss of wages and working days payment during organ donation process will be compensated by Hamad Medical Corporation.
h. Families of the deceased donor will be offered travel support as well as social security support
Some Religious Views
ISLAM
The religion of Islam believes in the principle of saving human lives. In one of the article, Islamic Views on Organ Transplantation, "...the majorities of the Muslim scholars belonging to various schools of Islamic law have invoked the principle of priority of saving human life and have permitted the organ transplantation as a necessity to enable this noble deed". “Whoever saves one life, it is as if he saves all mankind” (Holy Qur’an 5:32)
CHRISTIANITY
Christianity believes that the Lord demonstrated with his own life how, even in sorrow, love enables them to embrace the needs of others, to donate organs to save the lives of many people and the decision to donate at the end of life is the beginning of healing for many others.
JUDAISM
According to the Jewish faith, "If one is in the position to donate an organ to save another's life, it's obligatory to do so, even if the donor never knows who the beneficiary will be”.
BUDDHISM
Buddhists believe that organ and tissue donation is a matter of individual conscience, and they place high value on acts of compassion.
HINDUISM
Hindus are not prohibited by religious law from donating their organs. This act is an individual’s decision. There is nothing in the Hindu religion indicating that part of the human body, dead or alive, cannot be used to alleviate the suffering of other people.
