A celebration that is unique to Qatar and the local region, the Garangao festival is celebrated on the 14th day of Ramadan.

As per tradition, children sing ‘Garangao Garangao Atona Atona, Allah Yatikom (Give us, Allah will give you), while visiting their neighbors for gifts.

The Ramadan tradition is widely celebrated by children and it marks the halfway point of fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Residents were witnessed at the Souq Waqif nuts and sweets shops as people bought gifts for children in the preparation of the upcoming Garangao festival.

A source from the Ministry of Culture and Sports indicated that there would be events held similar to last year such as a competition for the best Garangao dress.

However, the Ministry pointed out that sweets and nuts will not be distributed to children this year due to the preventive measure in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

On the other hand, Garangao gifts containing ten different types of nuts are being sold at Souq Waqif from QAR 50 to QAR 200.

One can also find different Garangao gifts such as decorative wooden boxes for QAR 100 or less.

In celebration of the Garangao festival, girls wear traditional gowns with embroidery and gold jewelry like earrings, necklaces, and bangles, whereas boys wear the traditional Qatari Thawb, jackets, and caps.

With the aim of encouraging children to learn about tradition and customs, the Ministry of Culture and Sports deployed buses that distributed sterilized and closed Garangao gifts to children last year.

The Garangao gifts were delivered to the doorstep of houses using loudspeakers that played the Garangao song, wising safety, health, and joy to all.
