PROPER CLOTHES,WHY WHO?

nylha
By nylha

WHY? We are working in a country that woman is been covered with veil because of their culture and tradition, we must respect it since we come here to work & earn!

WHO? Mostly we Filipina are has been approached by so called police or mall security because we dress in many ways...(even though there is other nationality who make worst, and it make us think why?)

WHY? It will not do harm for us if we follow, and it will be very safe also for us. Since many of us is been a victim of some sexual harassment in many ways,,

Skirt and shorts have many kinds, not so skirt & short is banned in public places. Of course there is always exception to the rule.

At least be thankful we are not in Saudi, that wearing our own ways of clothes are totally banned,

REMEMBER WE ARE IN ISLAM COUNTRY

IF YOU WANT TO BE RESPECT, FIRST RESPECT YOURSELF.

A woman should dress decently no matter what or where...It does not equate into donning muslim dress nor does it make those that go with their arms uncovered immodest. There is a line that needn't be crossed here. It is not an all or nothing proposition.

For those people who seem to struggle (repeatedly) on the subject as to why women should dress in the prescribed 'Qatari style', it doesn't seem to occur to them that decency and respect are primary factors here.

Ultimately, as harsh as this sounds, if you don't want to abide by the rules then by all beans, move to another country. Living in the UK, the same rule applies here. I'm not saying that you cannot discuss the matter (even though it seems any substantive value in the subject matter has been exhausted), its just that the answers are rather plain and evident.

Heard of Grapes ! What's Rape ?

To QatariLady.

With all due respect first off, rape is not a crime of passion it is a crime of control. Rape has nothing to do with whether the victim is scantily dressed or covered head to toe. A rapist rarely talks about being "turned on" as a precursor for his crime. A woman is often villefied for what she was or wasn't wearing falsely. In western countries rape can occur even for the aged. There are 90 year old women raped, there are children raped and everyone in between.

Do NOT condescend to the people that post here by saying that rape rarely occurs here. Rape occurs under your very noses every time a housemaid is raped by her

"master". Those are almost never reported. The incidences are very high in Qatar just are hushed up. Although I believe a woman should be modest in her dress in any country simply because there should be a decent standard set, I do not believe simply by asking a woman to cover her shoulders will stave off the lustful gazes. Let's not talk about the indecencies of the arabs when they go abroad for a moment. Let's draw your attention to the depravities occuring in the house parties that do go on in this country and countries across the GCC. Yes, rape does run rampant in GCC countries, it is just couched under several different names and excuses.

again Qatarilady,i didn't say men of other nationalities don't stare,Indian men stare @ my wife too,& it saddens me that my countrymen behave this way but i'm not defending them or claiming it doesn't happen...& one more key difference, most of the Indian men that do stare are those that are forced to leave their wives behind back home because the authorities don't think they're "worthy" enough as human beings to have their wives live here with them, what excuse do local guys have?...& Indian/Asian men will stare when you pass them/they pass you,period...they won't follow you, continue staring, try & make eye contact, whisper their mobile numbers or throw a rolled up ball of paper with their mobile no:s on it in the hope that the woman will actually call them & this isn't hearsay,it has happened to a number of friends...talk about desperation...

Qatarilady,i didn't mention it & neither is it my intention to prove in any way that's it's only gulf, arab guys who're like this & don't get me wrong i'm not for walking around in public half naked,i'm Indian & come from one of India's metros where on the street & in malls, etc,i see what i term "normal",girls in t-shirts/jeans or tops & knee-length skirts etc, sure there are guys who lech & stare there too but it's not a majority, unlike here where 99% of the single, local guys you see @ the malls are out to lech @ &/or pick up women, now that's disgusting & sick...you see the essential difference is that elsewhere in the world, locals don't shy away from what's happening in their society, that's the point i'm trying to make...in the UK for example, any sicko who's busted for child pornography, rape, human trafficking etc is put on "sex offenders register",the info of which is available for anyone to access,so anytime he goes for a job or a club membership or anything where they have to check his credentials,he will be refused or denied because his name is on that register,so like i said, this issue exists all over the world,i fully agree, the point i'm trying to make is that the difference is elsewhere it's accepted & dealt with, here it's "oh we're so holy & morally correct,we do no wrong" when these guys are doing the same thing,no more,no less, that's why i stressed on "hypocricy"...as for the rape crime statistic you put up,i see people have already clearly pointed out that it's obviously based on "reported rapes",i can tell you for a fact that the figures for BOTH India & Qatar are waaaaaaaay lower than the actual incidents, just that so much goes unreported,i know that for a fact in India & i know that for a fact here, anyways i only said local guys stare & lech, didn't say they rape so what has this go to do with the topic @ hand??...unless you're one of those "oh if a man sees naked flesh,he'll rape or want to."...Qatarilady,i'm no shrink but i've studied enough basic behavioural sciences to state that it takes a certain type to actually rape a woman, not all men are automatically prone to rape a woman the moment they see an exposed arm or a leg,one of the reasons for that is they've grown up seeing it & consider it normal human anatomy as opposed to guys for whom it's not normal to see/talk to/interact with/develop normal platonic relationships with memebers of the opposite sex,it doesn't need a rocket scientist to tell you that sort of suppression is bound to lead to more extreme behaviour in men, this is human psychology,IRRESPECTIVE of nationality, race or religion...raping & staring are two COMPLETELY different things & btw, please don't take offence but due to wrong, skewered western media potrayal of arabs after 9/11,you get stared @ in a town in Europe not because the guy's 'checking you out' but because he's worried you have like a kilo of plastic explosive wrapped around you under that hijab that you're going to set off, killing him,you & everyone around, please don't be offended but this is the fact of the matter,i've stated already that this is due to incorrect, negative media publicity & i was trying to clarify that you getting stared @ in Europe has nothing to do with the guy letching @ you...

Rape rarely happens in GCC

Wife beating rarely happens in GCC

Child abuse rarely happens in GCC

because it isn't officially reported - check out the "history" of rape. It isn't reported when it isn't taken seriously i.e. the victim is treated as a victim again - she "asked for it" - why aren't the men involved held responsible for having "no self control"?

To those that hold opposite opinions, you obviously have never sat next to a woman with bruises, or had a class with a student with whip marks (from her family) in the GCC (and these ladies are GCC nationals - the latter being "disciplined" by her male relatives.

the abaya won't protect a woman against someone who is a violent offender of women. Nakedness or showing of skin has nothing at all to do with rape.

I didn't mean rape is a sign of mental disorder ONLY...there are many elements that factor into WHY a person rapes. However...that being said...a NORMAL man will NOT rape any woman.

Women are protected against rape by a whole system one element of which is decent clothing.

I don't think rape is a sign of mental disroder only. Constant rape perhaps is but there are cases where some men would rape only once.

well I admit I love to stare at the abayas, but because they are really beautiful, i just try not to be obvious about it. I am sure they are just in awe of your beauty.

Scarlet, unfortunately rape goes unreported in too many cases. Whether is be shame, fear, not wanting to bother with a legal system that puts the victim in the spotlight. or because they were drugged and don't quite remember. I know in the US is can be a horrible experience to have to testify against a rapist and have your own behavior called into question with the implication that you were at fault. I worked at a major hospital that was the only hospital in the state that would do the rape kits, and it was ugly. So many victims came through, but at lot of them would refuse to file charges

open your eyes and smell the coffee...

Rapes happen here more often than reported. I personally know of 2 ladies who have been pulled into an alley and raped. Neither of them reported it due to all the "problems" that are associated with it in this part of the world.

Rape is a crime of VIOLENCE...it is NOT caused by seeing more flesh. Quite a few of the offenders have had very dominating mothers that were not only physically abusive but mentally abusive.

They are rarely reported because they're rarely occuring!

Many rape crimes in the west aren't reported either. Last year an Austrian man was in the news for raping his own daughters, and it wasn't reported for 24 years. Do you guarantee that there aren't other rapists doing their business now without being reported?

If, as gadarene assumes, seeing enough flesh exposed makes ppl not willing to stare, then rape crimes shouldn't happen at all in the west.

By jassKat• 7 Aug 2009 23:42
jassKat

ah thanks, just never heard it called that before :P

I do have the say there are jerks every where you go in the world, it just seems how they commit their unacceptable behavior is different depending on where you are. Yes here in Qatar men will stare, follow, and make you feel very uncomfortable in a way that you don't see in the US( only using the US because that is where I am from and am used to). In the US the men might not stare, but they have other despicable behavior( date rape drug for example).

I think that when you are new to a place, it is hard to get used to the more seedy behavior, but regardless where you are, it is there!!

It was certainly a shock for me when I got here to always be stared at, I always feel like I must have something hanging off my face or my zipper is down or something! I am just not used to it. I am used to jerks from home and know how to avoid it, so I will just have to learn to get used to it here.

Qatarilady - these are "reported rape" statistics. In countries like the GCC, rape is rarely reported because it is seen as shameful for the woman and (bizarrely IMHO) even more shameful for her family to acknowledge publicly.

Rape is an assault (same as being beaten with a stick/fists/rocks/whatever) - the victim is NOT a willing participant. Where is the shame on the rapist and his family for failing to educate or control him?

Why are there no honour killings for rapists?

I agree that living in Qatar means we live by the rules of this country...but the fact remains that most Qatari men will definitely stare or sneak a peek when i'm in public with my wife(who doesn't wear sleeveless tops or shorts or minis in public, may i add) & @ every expat woman for that matter,so really the key word here is HYPOCRICY,@ the end of the day, they are human beings first, everything else comes after, they're so used to seeing their women covered up all the time that any sq. cm. of skin they see in public as decent as it may be to the rest of us,they will stare or sneak a peek,it comes naturally to them, they can't help it & i actually feel sorry for them, all the money in the world & yet they can't live life normally, wouldn't even say freely, just normally... same reason why when they go St.tropez or wherever, they go crazy 'cos they want to enjoy what is normal for the rest of us before they have to come back to 'cover up' zone...i have a good friend who's a local from a 'big, respected' family who goes away once every 2 months or so to his apt. in London & hooks up ONLY with other gulf, arab girls, random ones that he bumps into @ Harrod's or having lunch @ Maroosh in picadilly circus or wherever the arab hotspots in central london are & he says it's unbelievable how easy it is,they spot each other, make eye contact, start conversing in arabic,he invites them back to his place & party's on...he's been with single girls, married women, sisters, friends, the whole gamut & no they don't exchange phone numbers after or anything just move on...but when he's here,he always wears a thobe, doesn't mess around with expat or local women & just does what he's expected to do,his father knows what he's upto & has only said that as long as does what he wants outside Qatar/the gulf,it's fine...this guy's a good friend of mine so i know the details but there are so many gulf arab guys like him so it's not like he's an exception...so much for "respect our culture & traditions"...well they could try respecting it themselves before enforcing it on others...

We cant blame the people for having a primitive beliefs. You come here, you respect their rules. Same as if they come to your homeland. If others cant stand it, there are a lot of other countries to work to.

I cannot argue against your personal view, QL.

I wanted that too when I was 15 but when I grew up I realised that that was childish. Seriously, I never thought that by the time I grow up women in Qatar will still wear abayas. I thought that would be a dreadful idea. Now I'm grateful things haven't changed much on this side.

Ironically though, in the 1970s women used to wear see-through abayas like the ones popular in the UAE until the 1980s.

Talk to the 15, 16, 17, and 18 years old sometimes. Maybe they will tell you what they think. Maybe they will not because you are Qatari. They do tell me, however, because they are not afraid to say what they think in front of me.

15 years! Mashalla.. How did you survive? lol

The ppl I know 'friends, family, in-laws, colleagues, partners etc' think the same. We don't want things to go out of control.

If you think so, QL, I cannot object, but I have had a different experience in the last 15 years in Qatar.

Ordinary Qatari ppl who cannot sneak away are the ones who demand those rules.

By anonymous• 7 Aug 2009 13:15

I mean, QatariLady, that those who make the laws have all means to escape their own laws. So they don't really have to care much about how tough the laws might be on others.

By QatariLady• 7 Aug 2009 13:12

Well, MD. Some work the hell out of themselves year-round, while others can sneak out and enjoy themselves while their fortunes are being taken care of. Do you think Paris Hilton has to sign-in at 7 and sign-off at 3 so at the end of the month she can pay her rent?

By anonymous• 7 Aug 2009 13:03
anonymous

Yes, madam. But some have the means so sneak away when they get tired of the rules and some don't have the means. And those who don't have the means can never enjoy the "freedom" that the others can. Justice at its best.

So it's not different rules. They can go naked in St. Tropez and dress decently in Doha. This rules applies to everyone :)

By anonymous• 7 Aug 2009 12:56

Of course not, QL. They have enough money to go to St. Tropez twice a month.

Dear Nylha, such approach on behalf of police doesn't depend on nationality.

You are working here, right? So, keep your work place, if you need it really. If you are not working here and your husband is working, then keep his work place here, he probably needs it. Don't need it then leave and next one will come to take your place.

It looks like it is first time in August 2009 you hear of exsistance of such rules in Qatar and other GCC! Yes, KSA has some rules, too. Iran has, you know. Stop this victim feeling, be wiser..

Then I come to South-Asian countries, I don't touch the Orhids flowers in the strteets, even if I so much like them and would be happy to keep it in my hotel room. So, your police doesn't have an opportunity to approach me.

Well, except veil there is a huge presence of different staff to wear. And actually, try veil once, the different ones.

Good luck.

Alexa said RESPECT...ah yes....I faintly remember...isn't that that little thing that is earned, not given?"

- No, respect is the first thing that one gives to everyone (barring unknown biases) they meet and get to know ... But once respect is lost, THEN it has to be earned.

Everybody knows what is forbidden in Muslim countries like Qatar. If you can't live with their ways, well, you are free to leave. Most of us came here to work and earn for a living, and can still enjoy life. And by the way, for what are those revealing clothes?

In this part of the world there are at least two morals: one for the rich and powerful who can do what they want, and one for the poor and oppressed who have to do what the others tell them to.

Simple. In this part of the world, God create human flesh and skin to be covered. We must obey the law.

Not survival of the most moral, but survival of morality itself. When ppl reject the tried and true morals they only go through trial, error, trial, error until they realise they have to go back to basics.

Love it! Moral evolution. Survival of the most moral. Maybe we can turn it into a gameshow. Darwin's Most Moral and the prize is you get to flog yourself in front of prostitutes to the sound of Mozart....

Not necessarily. In the 1960s Kuwaiti women used to appear on national TV wearing mini-jupe. Now they don't. This is moral evolution.

Has anyone noticed the naked animals in doha? I saw two cats the other day and they were completley NAKED! I was disgusted and these cats have no respect for themselves.... They should be arrested and deported to Catrovia...

NYLHA, let me ask you something.....

you say one has to respect own self, then if you have confidence that the dress you are wearing is decent & suits you why would you change??? By changing yourself to suit what other's like are you not showing lack of confdence on yourself? That way you are NOT respecting yourself, my friend!!!

don't brush it aside as a westerner type thought as I am not a westerner but why would a country's law decide what people are supposed to wear?? And if citizens of such country are so proud of their 'legalised' dress code, why do they not wear them during their travels abroad?
