Militants storm Lahore mosques, take 1,500 hostages

LAHORE: Heavily armed Taliban guerrillas on Friday stormed two mosques packed with about 1,500 worshippers in this Pakistani city.

Heavy gunfire was interspersed with blasts when the terror attack took place on mosques of the Ahmadi sect in Garhi Shahu and Model Town areas of Lahore.

The militants lobbed hand grenades and opened fire on the people inside the mosques, the Geo TV reported.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and began an operation to rescue the worshippers who were being held hostage after they had gathered for Friday prayers.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Punjab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Suicide bombers struck at a market in Lahore city March 12, killing 45 and injuring over 100.
