World Cup Final - Referee

What is your opinion about the performance of the Referee in the WC final between Spain and Netherlands. Was he impartial or was he showing partiality to any particular team through out the match. I would like to know your personal perspective as I am not a fan of any of the teams who were in the final. I was expecting for Germany to win the cup

reason is holland fans are disgusted and have not recovered back to reply on this thread, they are also not happy with the teams way of playing as replied by one of the holland fan above.

It looks there are no Holland fans in QL. I have seen so far the replies praizing the cool match played by the Spaniards. Not even a single comment from a Holland fan to support their team even if the match was not really played well by them. I hope it would have been my team playing in the final but not like they played in the semifinal.

Congrats to the Spanish Team, Spain and any Spaniards around here as well as the Spanish Fans here in Doha.

They really deserved to win. They played really cool except on a few occasions they were forced to play it rough due to the Dutch who were really a dirty lot and didn't deserve to have come to the finals if they were to play that way. Hope they smoothen their play and show themselves as a changed lot for the next WC.

Lots of pressure for the referee and I think he did a good job. Like we say in the Netherlands; "Soccer is war." I however do agree that the boot too chest was too much, red was surely an option there.

To be short me and my wife enjoyed the game, too bad we lost, I am glad for Spain. The venue were we lost the game (five star hotel) disappointed me a bit with a big parking mess (glad we took a taxi), only one beverage station for 500 people and 4 toilets for 1000 people.

Terrible method of play by the Dutch. Hacking and clipping at the real talent all match. They desreved to lose. No talent vs. talent. Thank good ness talent won out in the end but it could have been worse. Fottballers have to see the game played in its rightful method. skill and passing and movement off the ball. Spain weere brilliant and fast. Holland were dullards and slow. who wnats children to emulate the Holland Goon Show? Spain werr all class. Conks to Spain!

all you guys who recken the goal was offside were you watching the same game? When the ball was delivered Iniesta was 2 yards onside, the Dutch pushed forward to lay the offside trap and it failed, 1-0 Spain end of story!!!

The Dutch played a very rough game. Especially Van Bommel. He should have been sent off in the first 20 minutes. Then came the boot to the chest by De Jong. Basically the Dutch were getting away with murder b'cos the ref didn't take charge. Yes, sending off a player early might have affected the game. But was it better to watch the beautiful game ruined by 10 hooligans in oranje?

But the quality of football played by both sides was bad. And the ref didn't have anything to do with that.

game. Yellow cards were given to both teams and more to the Dutch because they were too rough and played too physical throughout the game.

It is a well-deserved win for the Spaniards though.

Robben ?

are u people talking about Robin from Batman ? :)

By Arien• 12 Jul 2010 09:07
Arien

Robben had the net with only the Goalkeeper left , but spain also missed good chances.

Mr M.

I even heard Robben did not even shake the hand of blatter when he recieved his runners- up medal. He just snatched it and walked away!

By cherukkan• 12 Jul 2010 09:04

I think Robben is the one who let out Holland to the runners up position. He got the best chances in the final and he was unable to score for his team. If he was able to score in the first chance I feel the result would have been different.

By hms• 12 Jul 2010 08:55

the missed goal by Forlan will haunt him through out his life, he was terrific,

Similarly, Robben missed chances yesterday will haunt him through out his life and will always be in his mind

By Arien• 12 Jul 2010 08:54

hms I agree.

I was so upset when Forlan missed that freekick to an inch hitting the crossbar in the loosers final, at the 93rd minute . just before the final wistle :( when they were trialing 3-2 ..

Wht a kick it was ,it passed the wall and the goal keeper and moved in.. he is 31, his last WC, last game, last minute, last chance to be in the game and he missed it.

By Mr M.• 12 Jul 2010 08:53
Mr M.

Hms i say The Germans wanted to play in the final, and of course Mueller would heve been phenomenal yet again just as he was in previous matches, same with Forlan,

You could see the expressions on the faces of the Germans i nthe 3rd place game which said "we shouldn't be here,we should be in the final" !

reality is Spain is the world champions, but my heart still says......

Yes hms, anything can happen in football, but the Spanish won in the end.

ofcourse he is also human being, there were few wrongs went like a fraction of second unnoticed, still good.

Netherlands were very rough probably out of mindset created by Paul octopus

By hms• 12 Jul 2010 08:49

Forlan was outstanding in this world cup, i am happy about Mueller as well, still i belive his presence in the semis would have been a different story alltogether, what u say Mr. M and arien.

By Arien• 12 Jul 2010 08:48
Arien

Ineista was left unmarked in the danger most position inside the box. He was not offside too.. a sheer mistake by the Dutch defender ..

I am happy for Forlan for being selectd for the Golden ball.. what a player!!! un recogonized though :(

M may everything was happening so fast, human error,

By Mr M.• 12 Jul 2010 08:46
Mr M.

I know hms he was onside as the ball came into play, but he was in a offside position if you didn't notice! he realised it soon enough!

Most referees would have blown the whistle at that instant!

Anyway both teams played a tight match.

I don’t know what attitude Dutch players bring with them in the ground.

There must be 2-3 straight red cards to Dutch players (boot to chest and misbehaving while protesting on Goal). These are very very bad gestures from Dutch players.

Well done Spanish team your patience payoff at last.

By hms• 12 Jul 2010 08:41
hms

M. Ineista's goal was not offside, he was clearly onside, which was quite evident from the replies, when ball was released he was in onside position only

By Mr M.• 12 Jul 2010 08:39
Mr M.

When Robben was fouled in the 18 yard area,it was clearly seen, but the ref continued play, and when he violently protested,he was booked.

Robben was at once in an offside position, but when the referee whistled,he continued and was warned, big blow if he was booked again and sent off!

I still feel ineista's goal was offside.

I believe he ran the match in order to maintain the spectacle. An early sending off (boot to chest) would have ruined the game.

13 Yellow Cards and 1 Red.... I really enjoyed the game... Yeah, as hms said; The Dutch were playing a rough game..

and i was expecting to be physically presnt in SA to see the finals but was here in this beautifool climate sweating and getting WET.....:(

was impartial throughout, except on one occassion when Robben was pulled by Puyol, Puyol should have shown 2nd yellow card ( red) and should have sent him back after awarding free kick to Netherlands, apart from that he was fair, Dutch played very rough football, and referee was struggling to keep the match flowing in a smooth way, afterall he is a human being with such fast pace of football some errors will happen, but Puyol case was exceptional
