Women in the workplace

Hi guys,

I will probably be moving to Doha from the US for a few months for a work project. I've lived in the Middle East as a child, and am really excited to go there again!! And while I'm very comfortable with the culture, I'm a bit apprehensive about the working enviornment..... I'm a 26 year old, single female, and from what I've read, only 13% of the Qatari workforce is female.....I'm guessing many of these women are in the educational/engineering/medical fields (I'm in a completley different sector). Given these stats, I'm guessing I will probably be one of the only women at work......does anyone have any insight on what I should expect? Would my new co-workers be receptive to me as a collegue? And though I've easily dealt with unwanted male interst in the past at my previous jobs, I don't really know what the propper way to do that over in Doha would be..... Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!! :)

Hi, Could you let me know what type of jobs that women mostly do in Qatar?

Thanks for all your replies! Nice to know there'll be lots of women working with me :) Perhaps my information was outdated, but when I researched on the net, it said that only 13% of the workforce was women... , seems like the people I'm working with are really nice, so who cares what the gender split is :)

Thanks!

Not really because when you start work anywhere you feel like someone might not like you and pick on you but just don't think about it too much!

There're both Qatari and expat women in the work force, and it's increasing fast. I haven't heard of any such thing as sexual harassment so far. It should be just fine.

Hi there! until now im still so worried to go to Qatar for work, because a lot of people are commenting that it is not safe to go there! but for me, i believe that doha, qatar is already an open city which was described once to us by the recruitment agency as "little europe" and according to them, qatar crime rate is zero, which is really made me pursue to apply for work for the asean games which will be held soon.... I hope you could help me out with all my curiosity!!!! My parents dont even support me with my decision to work there for the asean games hope you could help me out with this!!!! tnx a lot ! ! ! I understand what happycat is saying.... =)

Thanks! Your responses make me feel a lot better :-) I guess I was more worried about them not treating me like their other colleagues...obviously, just like any new environment, there's no guarantee how the chemistry with the new hire will be. I'm really looking forward to working in Doha, and hope that this will be a good fit....as for my work, no not top secret (though that would sound cooler, wouldn't it ;)). I work for a communications consulting firm.

Thanks!

happycat, don't worry for that. I work in construction project here as a engineer now. No idea about your work project, but I am fine in office with other guys. Even in the days that there's no need to go site, I wear skirt.

Not sure what your job's going to be but there's very little sexual harassment here as the penalties are severe and a woman's word in such matters holds more weight than men's.

Outside work you'll get looks and maybe the occasional attempt to hand you a phone number but all can be handled. My wife hasn't had a serious problem in 10 years except for a guy tailing her once and he was quickly dealt with.

What's your job is it top secret?
