Women want to marry rich ..

Feminism and equality take a blow... ??

A new survey suggests that most women still prefer to marry a man who earns more money than they do and would stay at home with their children if they could afford it.

Despite years of equality campaigning and advances for women in the workplace, 64 per cent said they aspire to find a husband who brings home a larger pay packet than they do. None wanted to marry a man who earned less.

And 69 per cent said they would prefer to stay at home to look after their children if money were not an issue.

Only 19 per cent wanted their other half to be better educated than they are. Instead 62 per cent said they wanted a man to have the same level of intellect.

The survey follows controversial research published last week by Dr Catherine Hakim of the London School of Economics, which claimed more women are choosing to ‘marry up’ by picking wealthy men for their spouse than in the 1940s.

Do you not also agree though that sometimes you don't need to?

You can still be an educated woman and still be a hands on mother and wife without it compromising your intelligence?

By nomerci• 10 Jan 2011 16:59

brit, that is true. I have experienced that many times. It seems some women can't accept the choice another woman makes. Some women also feel the need to "prove" to men that they are equal or better.

I find that a little sad.

You are right. However, as the article says, many feel that they should work due to peer pressure..

brit, I think rather than "equality" per se, many women today want, and have, CHOICE that previous generations didn't have.

i know Isobel.

i am just clarifying the issue, to remove some misunderstanding about this issue for some people.

especially the rights for women in the Islamic communities.

Not too different in what I said then.

make sure, the source of the survey can be Saudi base, and they want to use it as a tool against freedom of working women.

I thought everyone knew that already. Whats new?

why the general understanding about love is the bed issue?

but my understanding about love is the feeling issue?

Lincoln, oh no....but when my stomach is growling, I won't be able to .A. because being hungry is distracting, b. because I would be angry with myself for having chosen a loser. But I don't have to worry, as my lovely man is more than able to take care of my needs. I chose wisely. :)

By anonymous• 10 Jan 2011 13:15

.. and when you have a full stomach you will surely be too lazy to make love. Hahaha.

It's quite simple, money provides a full stomach, love doesn't. And what one shot said.

i don't want to jump to a religious discussion here but there is no harm in mentioning the following especially for women.

in islam , man should earn the money and provide a good living to his family "as much as he can,not necessarily being rich".

woman should raise the kids and help them and support them, there is no objection in letting the woman work and everyone is saying the opposite then he is talking about culture not religion".

the money that woman earn is for herself only and the man has no right to take it from her.

and one more thing, and a lot of muslims don't know about it.

the contract of marriage in islam is not obligate the woman to cook or clean for her husband, but she is doing this in the name of love and good living and for her kids to live a good life.

but she is obligated to help her kids. in what she is good in.

and God only knows the truth and may guide us to it, walla a3lam

I think it is a primeval thing in us. The men are the hunter gatherers and the women are the home makers and custodian of the children lol

So perhaps at some level we do choose men who have good earning potential as that will allow us to do what nature intended.

However, circumstances can change - for example if the man lost his job the woman may be the one to go out and earn the money - so is it not important that at some level their earnings are similar or have the potential to be?

I don’t think even in 2011 a woman can have it all really – if the kids are sick; who do they want the most; Mum. It is us that usually take them for appointments as this is our role. I am not saying that men do not do these things too but we are the nurturers as nature intended. If one of ours is ill and not at school it is far easier for me to be off than my husband. Even then; other women who are single or don’t have children can get bitchy about that.

Show me a woman that says she has it all and I will show kids and husband that don’t.

Why do all men think that a women who sits at home does nothing and the one who works should just be naturally capable of handling home and office. And yes when there are no other causes for comparison a woman would definitely prefer a better earning man.

It is true. Taking care of children is full time of job and children never grow.

Earning should be just enough to live comfortably. More money, more waste.
