Will QL Ladies now boycott L’Oréal ?

By britexpat

L’Oréal, the French cosmetics giant, whose advertising campaigns proclaim “because you’re worth it”, was found guilty of racial discrimination for considering black, Arab and Asian women unworthy of selling its shampoo.

France’s highest court was told that the group had sought an all-white team of sales staff to promote Fructis Style, a haircare product made by Garnier, L’Oréal’s beauty division.

The word went out that Garnier’s hostesses should be BBR — “bleu, blanc, rouge” — the colours of the French flag. The expression is widely recognised in the French recruitment world as a code for white French people born to white French parents, a court was told, in effect excluding the four million or so members of ethnic minorities in France.

La Cour de Cassation, the equivalent of the US Supreme Court, said that the policy was illegal under French employment law, upholding a ruling given by the Paris Appeal Court in 2007.

Districom employees said that they were given oral instructions to favour white sales staff. But Thérèse Coulange, the deputy managing director of Districom, who sent the fax, said that she had merely wanted hostesses able to “express themselves correctly in French”. She said that the fax had been a personal initiative and not the implementation of company policy.

What bullshit this is.

I have a product, I want to sell it, I decide who gets to sell it. Marketing strategy, sales strategy... all business-related and, in essence, has nothing to do with racism. If I sell certain products I may, if I take my business seriously, want to make a profile of the 'correct' individual to sell my items. Nothing wrong with that. It starts with Male/Female followed by other criteria.

On CNN there was this commercial selling a skin-product especially designed 'for women of color'. You now think the owner/ceo/cfo would want a 'white chick' to sell it? NO... that would be stupid.

The big mistake L'oreal made is the way they have communicated their preferences, and should simply come forward and apologize for any misunderstandings.

I'm not sure that l'Oreal should be held responsible for 1 persons actions, if that brand doesn't hold the same views. After all.....

Alexa,

good point..if it was for marketing reasons discussed by you and Oryx and twisted by journalists then nothing is wrong i believe..

but if the company is found guilty then it is a racist act.

consider that instructions were oral and the managaing director stated it is a personal initiative.

I agree but as the thread states "...found guilty for considering considering black, Arab and Asian women unworthy of selling its shampoo."

unworthy!!

Thought about it.....

Would be strange eh to go to a predominately Asian country and see white people advertising products....the company would be called - racists

and then you go to another country and they use models according to their perceived target market and they are called racists.....

so women to advertise shaving foam?

men to advertise tampons?

because other wise the companies are being sexist....

So what you're saying is that one should not make any stands on ethical or moral grounds..

We are living in consumer societies.

If you'll start boycotting out of certain principles, you may as well go live in a rain-forest in a bamboo hut where you can run around naked all day.

Regardless, I think men and women should boycott so many products and trademarks..

I see running after trademarks as bad as mental disturbances.

I would exclude items offering real value for paid money and those ones which respect intelligence of consumers.

That is horrible, and very very sad indeed. In today's world it really is sad to still encounter such racism. They've dug themselves a hole there.
