Why are supermarkets called 'hypermarket'?

because u get "hyper" when u walk-in, every time i go there for some cheese and bread I walk-out with a minimum of Qrs 100 bill. I always lose control in a "hyper"market :D
Its a European thing...the Spanish have Hypermarkets too, I actually think a Hypermarket is bigger than a supermarket!
We, Yanks, use the word "Super" not "Hyper."

Wouldn't you better begin by asking why a large grocery shop is called a supermarket?
It doesn't mean everyone uses the term correctly.
but LULU is only about groceries... so why hyper?
they are soo super and crowded that makes the buyer so hyper.
