Who wants cute puppies?

Chelsea
By Chelsea

Grow up. Every other question on QL at the moment is asking for pugs (the new "in-breed") or cute puppies.

QAWS don't rehome animals to people who want "cute puppies", "fluffy white dogs", "anything little and cute", "anything mean looking", "something that will bite".

If that's your attitude, don't bother calling.

If someone wants a loving companion and are willing to:

* take on a rescue animal for the next 10 - 15 years
* invest thousands of riyals in food, vet care, toys and general care over the years
* keep them inside and have them as a part of the family
* take their pets with them when they leave Qatar
* respect them, teach them, enjoy them
* work through any chewing, peeing and pooing all over the house, illness, training, barking
* never abandon them or pass them on to someone else

then they are more then welcome to come down to the shelter and meet our residents.

We strive to rehome our animals to people who will love them forever - not be interested in them when they're "cute puppies" and dump them when they grow up.

Puppies are only puppies for a few months. What about after that? Are your prepared for all the training, the chewing, the barking, the play-biting?

If you are ready for all of this then please come down and meet the crew and see who steals your heart.

**Please note that we DO NOT rehome puppies under the age of 5 months to families unless there is someone at home ALL DAY. Puppies this small can only be left for a maximum of 2 hours and are not suitable for homes where there is no-one around for long periods of time.**

I have a huge husky mix dog who looks like a wolf. Everyone stops us when we're out walking and we've been offered QR15,000 for him!! I keep trying to explain he's a mix breed dog and not a wolf but people won't listen! Unfortunately he's as stupid as it comes which isn't great in a large dog - he'll regularly run into things (or people) and is scared of walking in the dark!

The best dog I've personally owned was a mixed breed. He died years ago and I still miss him. :)

As someone fostering a shepard, I fully back what Chelsea is saying. Shepards need alot of time otherwise you will have a troublesome dog on your hands, which is also very true for any other breed really. If you want a specific breed, research the type and be prepared for the work.

I walk a dog twice a day if possible and take her for long beach runs at least once a week, if not more. I also spend time working her brain as she is very intelligent and needs mental stimutation as well as physical. Out of all the dogs I've fostered, this one is costing me the most.

Thank you - that just proves my point exactly.

Must be an original not a mix????? Why?

Why a german shepherd? Because it looks mean? Or because you are familiar with the breed and enjoy spending a minimum of one hour a day walking, hours of training and like having a big dog taking up all the space in the house. GSD lives for anything up to 18 years and will grow up to 50kg in weight.

Are you ready for the costs involved? Vaccinations are QR540 a year, neutering will be a minimum of QR1,000, tick collars are QR180 every 2/3 months, GSD pups need feeding 3/4 times a day on a good quality dog food which will be around QR500 a month, a dog trainer will cost in the region of QR500 a month.

And then there is always the risk that your GSD will have hip dysplacia and will need medication and vet care for the rest of its life. And unfortunately with all the in-breeding in this country, it's quite common.

Are you willing and able to meet the criteria as outlined by Chelsea? How is your home ready? Have you done any research on the breed? Have you owned a big dog before? Do you have any dog obedience and house training experience?

This dog will get big; will need daily grooming because of its double coat; will need at least 2 x 30 min walks with lots of exercise (running/playing) and at least 2 other shorter walks for bathroom breaks; do you have an airconditioned place for it to live? These dogs are smart (a lot smarter than some owners) and YOU need to be well trained before taking one on.
