What's wrong with this statement?

From today's Peninsula
"The capacity of hotels in the country needs to increase from the current 4,300 rooms to some 29,000 rooms by 2012 to accommodate the projected growth in visitor traffic, said the Qatar Tourism and Exhibition Authority.
..... an increased number of tourists are expected to flock to the city to experience its abundance of cultural and various tourist sites. "
Hmmm....a seven fold increase in hotel rooms in 3years? To come and see what exactly? there may well be new 'attractions' in the pipeline but A 7 FOLD INCREASE NEEDED?!?!!
The New Islamic Art Museum only brings in a trickle, what else have I missed out on in Doha that will require 24,000 more hotel rooms?
Tourism..wow
Major traffic to Dubai is either shopping or business. Here everything is epensive and people from here goes to Dubai to buy stuff.
There is no easy visit visas provided like UAE does. You got to approach some hotel and pay through your nose. Emirates offices allover the network itself provides visa for the UAE visitors.

Rydges has gone, garveys has sort of gone,Its seems that booze licences are maybe been withdrawn, people who have worked there cannot return for 2 yrs, maybe 5, so what tourists are they after?
After all, theres not much to see.......

I think you have me confused with someone who gives a sh1t.
As much as I love Qatar, it's because of the friendships I have made here. I just can't imagine coming as a tourist to see the sights (although Dubai had a successful tourist industry without much in the way of scenery or local culture.) I just don't know, pipe dream or good planning? M-I-C ... (Merry Can and PM will sing the rest.)

Baldrick2dogs, you are right "stadia" is correct, instead of "stadii", and 'if' should be replaced with "eif" in the third line. In any case, I think it is a bright idea to expand the city, if there is the means for it, and also have a plan to create more tourism attractions and a friendlier environment for visitors. Maybe there is plan we don't know about.
Check this out, digressing a bit, but still on the infrastructure planning..."The New Doha International Airport (NDIA) upon completion of the first phase will be capable of handling 12 million passengers a year, and 750,000 tonnes of cargo. Once fully developed in 2015 at a cost of $5.5bn, the airport is expected to handle up to 50 million passengers and 2 million tonnes of cargo a year" At the moment the passenger throughput at DOH should be more than 3M in a year. Please don't ask me how the 50M passengers and cargo will be created.
I don't have all the answers, read between the lines maybe you will find the answers with some luck someone may post a reply with all the answers to the issue of the hotel rooms.

Polka, isn't the plural of Stadium, STADIA?
OK, so if the are building for, let's say, the World Cup, what are they gonna do with all those empty rooms after the event? And what of all the staff that will be laid off afterwards due to poor occupancy rates? Double the number of hotel fine, but soooo many more - where they gonna put them????
Did you Google it first?
Hmmm...Doha has the potential of being one of the most preferred destinations eif ongoing and future projects are completed on schedule.
Already it is seen as the fastest growing financial capital in the world and there shouldn't be an issue of shortage of hotel rooms if it has that status.
In addition, it is the city for the only five-star airline in the world. We should also appreciate the city also has a number of state-of-the-art stadii(as in stadiums) where big events continue to be hosted, not only Olympic Games. Conferences and meetings which take place in Doha may sometimes require a lot of rooms.
It is better to be prepared than to be left in pants down situations, where rooms would have to be made available on ships, as in the past. I believe that, the initiative is an approach taken by a long-term planner and it must be applauded. If the money is available let it be invested wisely to create more wealth, if not for today, for the next generation. The gas is still flowing...
Finally, if there are more rooms available, the price of a hotel room per night should under normal circumstances decrease, This should make the conditions more favourable to attract tourists for either a suntan or sun burn as they please. In effect tourism will be boosted.
Just my thoughts, my two cents worth.
Who knows maybe here's the only safest place to be spending your holidays considering what's happening in the world nowadays there are some more attactions in the works like the cultural village which will house some of the finest works from different countries and the pearl with its world renowed development, let's wait, hope and see anyway it will benefit all of us if this happens.

The influx of tourists has to coincide with the increase in China Dolls, thus leading to a requirement for short term hotel space..
There are really peak seasons that it is very difficult to get a room esp. if it's a Gov't event. However, I find it surprising that Qatar needs that number of rooms. I apologize but I just don't see the "abundance of cultural and tourists sites".

Everything happens for a
reason.
Am privy to some "BIG" developments here... one real big in the pipeline, it will start probably by 3rd quarter of 2009, and it will equal if not surpass Dubai's biggest tourist attraction... with the expected volume of visitors that this one single BIG project will generate, hotel room capacities must similarly be expanded.
tourist attractions???
they must be talking about the abundance of soiled nappies and rubbish at the inland sea.
money ? then what happened to Olympics ? At that tym they where bankrupt or wat ?
rMs .. !!
the problem is the lack of transparency in these articles and 'projections'.
I get the feeling that these 'projections' are made up so that the people compiling these, ever so detailed(NOT), 'projections' get a cut as a consultancy fee from the construction firms/hotel companies.
They are white elephants that someone is making a packet out of.
