i agree gumby - a quick soft tap which causes surprise and not pain is OK.  but a real spanking or any form of corporal punishment is wrong.  it accomplishes nothing and only shows weakness and an inability to govern emotions in the parents.

of course things were different when we were growing up and i know spanking was par for the course when my parents were raising me, but we know better today.

Novita - nothing!  9 days late.  one way or another our doctor said he would get the party started on saturday.  not even born and already a stubborn bugger - it's gonna be a fun ride!

there were plenty of kids who watched that film (doomsday) and they are equally applauding along with parents.. i hope the parents do explain to them that what they are watching is just a movie, nothing of sorts happen in reality... :/

You can get both NTSC and PAL formats here the only problem is the NTSC version comes with  only 110 volt power cord so you need a power up supply but when i was at home at chrissy i ordered a new power cord through nintendo there and it came within a week so i threw the american one out (cord not console) the other thing is you can only play PAL games on a PAL version and vis versa, so it just depends on what your tv format alows we bought the NTSC version as the games come out quicker on them so we can get them as soon as they are released as oppessed to waiting a couple of months for the PAL. but its upto you would also advise get an extra controller straight of the mark as well you'll need it.

Again sorry for the hijack

Mmmmm, I tend to agree.  When I was young we had the "spanking stick" that hung in the broom closet.  Was used once, when I painted the dog orange, but the idea that it was in the background was an effective deterrent.

I don't generally agree with physical punishment, but a quick slap on the wrists of a toddler reaching for a hot pot or something like that is appropriate when they don't have the verbal/cognitive abilities to understand otherwise.  Deliberate infliction of pain on older children is just wrong.

using the TV as a babysitter and ignoring them isn't the answer either.

research has shown that there are more effective ways of disciplining your kids.  the key is making sure they respect authority, and spanking them does not accomplish this - the only thing it accomplishes is teaching your kids that violence is acceptable when someone does something you don't like.

What the modern kids need is more quality time with their parents even single parents. Children feel secure when they feel their mothers or fathers are interested in spending time with them rather than on the computer or watching TV or stuff like that .Better still if as parents we can join them in rollicking or playing with them , the bond that is created will last thru out life.

I don't agree with the new way of giving kids playstations or video cassettes to entertain themselves ,just because we have no time to play with them.

Mothers and fathers have to take time off from their busy schedules to spend time with their kids .There is no point in cribbing later that our kids got spoilt or they did this or that and regretting things.

Let us remember  that time goes fast , we have our kids with us only for 18 or 20 years of their lives and if we do not spend time with them during these formative years, they wouldn't want to spend quality time with us when we need them .

Nothing is wrong with the kids, they are the same as they have always been.  They have the same impulses, desires and thoughts as kids for thousands of years.  What has changed is the way they are raised, the shape of the family, the influence of neighbourhoods, media exposure, etc.  Kids are no different than ever, their surroundings are, and it is the parents' job to deal with that.  Stop questioning the kids and start questioning their guardians, to do otherwise is a cop-out.

GG, at the moment he is into the computer games ... he dowload games like from BBC side and from Dorling Kingsley (Spelling) educational CD.

And yes if in the end i buy him one of those he would be only allow to play in the weekend during school term.

My mom used to beat the living sea monkies out of me. The thing is after my brother died, I was the next first child in the family, so everyone used to give me everything lol. But as I grew up, our situations were not that good financially, so my parents couldnt buy me toys and i was really spoilt and stubborn back then. So I wasnt really the mama's boy kind of a kid. But at the end, I am glad for those slaps, if it wasn't for them I wouldnt have been in my senses now.

We bought him a Play station at 7... you should always select the right games and allow only limited usage........say half an hour a day after finishing his homework ..or only on weekends etc..  Physical exercise is always the best, as they are single kids, they get very bored at home...these games keep them busy for sometime.

what about a nintendo wii. we have one and my children are 5 alost 6 (her words) and 3 they love playing tennis and golf as well as mario party 8 most of the sports games require you to get up off the couch in order to play them. I would reccomend it to any parent who is afraid theier kid is going to become a couch drooling game player if they purchase an xbox or playststion.

The level of violence in popular media is both hard to miss and easy to ignore….which lead to increased anti-social behavior and aggression …..increased levels of fear due to perceiving the world as violent ….acceptance of violence as a way of settling conflict

Video games have taken center stage as an especially powerful and violent influence. Players actively engage in maiming, killing victims in an effort for a high score or to win the game. I always keep an eye on what my kid is playing on net and never buy him games with Violence, but its really hard to stop completely , they see it in the TV everyday… Parents should ask themselves what influence violent media is having on their kids??
